XM Is It Worth It?

Thu Apr 29, 2004 8:27 am

My mom is considering getting an XM ready CD player in her car(which will come down to me). So does anyone have any experience with XM radio and how much did it cost with installation and all. Thanks for the input

The indoor player was about $190 (w/ tax) (Circuit City). Then there's the $10 a month subscription fee. It's a good bit, but there's a lot of music to pick from, plus plenty of talk stations. I don't know how much car installation is.

What's XM radio? Is it the equivalent of DAB Digital Radio here in the UK? Or something entirely different?

I must admit that I am an XM junkie. I have them installed in 4 of my cars, and we have two of them in the house. (We also have all of the music channels provided by Dish Network - so we've about got it covered).

After a few days of listening to XM programming (whatever your choices may be) it will be very hard to tolerate typical FM or AM radio again.

Personally, I use Sirius. They gave me the tuner (normalley $150 on top of the head unit) for free. I love it; the $13/month is well worth it, for Fox News, weather updates, and all the commercial free music. I hardly ever listen to FM or CD's anymore. Sirius has much better sports coverage, especially with the NFL in the fall.

I spend put 2-3000 miles on my car a month, so it's well worth it, most of it is local driving, but where it really shines is on road trips. 5 hours straight through was a breeze.

I'm biased as I am a radio junkie and I drive an average of 3200 miles per month. If you only listen to the radio during a commute to work and little at home, it probably is not worth having.

But then it's to be your mothers car. It's her choice.

Are there any plans (in the near future) for a handheld unit? I only drive to the airport and back, so the car isn't appealing, but a Walkman-type unit would be awesome!

Count on that, Deltaffindfw. I remember mobile phones being the size of a brick less than 20 years ago. Look what's happened since.
