"To make a friend, be a friend." One way to be a friend is to be a good listener. Ask about the other person's interests, hobbies, family, and concerns. Use the other person's name in the conversation. Be sympathetic and try to understand the other person's problems. (But on the other hand, it's usually best not to get TOO personal in the first couple of meetings.) Learn how to make small talk about the weather, news, community happenings. And be yourself! Remember, you have a lot to offer the other person.
