Soccer Footnote To War: Iraq Qualifies For Athens

Thu May 13, 2004 9:04 pm

Just a not-so-unpleasant sidenote to the Iraq war:

The soccer team of Iraq, coached by former East German Bernd Stange, qualified to participate in the 2004 Olympics soccer tournament by defeating Saudi Arabia 3-1 in Amman.

According to Spiegel-Online thousands of people were in streets in Baghdad and cheering all night!

Well congratulations, good news for a change from Iraq!
 Big thumbs up
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Good for them. I hope they get a rousing ovation when they enter the Olympic stadium.  Big thumbs up

I wonder if they've already got a set of new jerseys after the flag change to match the new colors.

Is the US soccer team qualified, too?
Where have all the tri-jets gone...

Usher don't get polemic on me now!!  Big grin Big grin
Besides I read somewhere shortly after the war, there were soccer/football matches between Iraqis and US and Brit soldier teams:
Usually the Americans and the Brits got their a§§es kicked...not that we didn't expect it in the case of the Brits  Big grin Big grin

An extra cheer for them in the stadium? Yes why not, I'd do it if I were there!

btw: I like the fact they kicked out Saudi-Arabia ...couldn't happen to a nicer bunch Big grin

They got their ticket (well they will probably get real ones), but not necessarily for Athens. The football tournament will be hosted by four cities, Thessaloniki (btw: also called the "mother of Israel" by Jewish people), Volos (centre East), Patras (South West) and of course Athens.

Wherever they will play, one thing is guaranteed, they will have at least 3 ovations of 90 minutes each (unless they play the home side, in which case they would have to settle for a little less).
The home crowd will not let this pass unnoticed, trust my words on this.

Would not it be historic if the national Iraqi team plays in the mother of Israel ?
(...is there a US team present, just to top the occasion with whipped cream ?)

I have to rectify, 5 host cities, not 4. I forgot Irakleio/Heraklion in Crete.
And I checked, no US team, North America will be proudly represented by Costa-Rica and Mexico.

The IRAQ team is here in Colorado training as we speak. America is going to pay for all expenses and they have full use of all resources needed. They arrived about a week ago in Colorado Springs and will continue training there until leaving for the Olympics.

GO IRAQ!!!!!

Wow, that's nice for a change, after all those unpleasant news about USA and Iraq.

They won't get far though, it's an amateur team basically, Coach Stange said in an interview he didn't even know some of his players until they turned up in training camp. It's not as bad as with the Palestinians: They put ads in newspapers to find palestinian football players ready to form a national team...maybe we should try that in Germany, too  Big thumbs up

That is great news. I am glad to see something good for Iraq! I wish them the best of luck and it would be great if they won some medals.
