Host City For 2012 Olympics

Tue May 18, 2004 5:38 am

Tomorrow the IOC will decide about the finalist cities for the 2012 summer Olympics. The candidates are New York City, Rio de Janeiro, Havana, London, Paris, Leipzig, Madrid, Istanbul and Moscow.

OK, the odd city seems to be the German entry Leipzig. Compared to the other cities it's rather small (500.000 inhabitants) and I'm sure a lot of people havn't heard about it.
But the IOC president Rogge has said that he wants to move away from gigantism.
So what do you guys think. Which city will make the final round. It's not sure how many will make it (4-5 seems to be realistic).

New York City and Rio de Janeiro are top contestants AFAIC. NYC has much more money to put on the table (read: to corrupt this coterie of dethroned crowned heads), but since Latin/South America hasn't organized the games in a while, I think Rio will prevail.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

Leipsch, how the Saxons would spell it, is a nice town and compared with his competitors nearly a village. But nonetheless, I guess Leipzig will make it to the final round (yes, you can call it a kind of local patriotism), the other cities will be: Rio, Moscow, Paris and maybe also Istanbul.

So, lets wait and see.
Well done Germany!

My money's on:

1. NYC: natural candidate.
2. Paris: natural candidate, plus a great project (imagine playing beach volley on the Champ de Mars).
3. Rio: same reason as Qb, plus, I think the gigantism comment was aimed at them.
4. London: natural candidate.

Sorry to disappoint you FraT, but I don't think Leipzig stands a chance...

FraT, we are both from AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, and I would have favored AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA to enter for Germany, since the infrastructure is promising! But I think Leipzig is relatively well known abroad, but you are right - it can't compete...

I personally would hope for Havanna, that would be a great opportunity to show a paradigm change... Sport for Peace

LON, Rio, NYC, MOW and maybe IST or MAD will enter the next round, my guess. From these candidates, I would prefer in the following order

- Rio
- MOW
- IST

LON and NYC in my eyes are too insecure at the moment, and why again NYC after 1984 LA, 1996 ATL... now other cities should show their capability!  Smile

Btw FraT, do you think there will be another 'wunder vom Main von der Eintracht'?  Smile

I think Moscow won't get to the next round as they hosted the Olympics in 1980 (although a lot of countries boycotted the games because of the war in Afghanistan). Also Madrid will have difficulties as the games were in Spain (Barcelona) in '92.

Mrniji,

absolutely, FRa would have been a better candidate IMO, as it is well known all over the world and has a much better infrastructure. But the German decision was just about politics. They want to support East Germany, even by risking not making the final round. Now they have a reason to give all the money to Leipzig.

It cant be the USA again they just had it in Atlanta.

Germany are getting the world cup in 2006 so they can sod off too.

As a neutral, i would vote Rio but as a Londoner i vote London.

Given that the IOC is completly neutral, and rightly does not take politics into account at all, they should consider all candidates.

Unluckily, these criteria hardly find any consideration: 1984 LA, 1996 ATL, winter 2002 Salt Lake City, 1994 Soccer World Cup USA

1972 MUC (olympia)
1974 Soccer WC Germany

Roberta, where do you live in LON?? I am up in Islington

As for you guys bitching about America getting too many Olympics, most of the time its all too logical to hold them in America. A lot of American cities has the infastructure in place already, has proven that they can actually build stadiums and arenas in short time frames (unlike the 2004 host), and American cities are not completely overwhelmed with large crowds. I went to Atlanta '96 and SLC '02, there could not be any better atmospheres than those two places.

As for Havana? Yeah, I could see it happening, but it wouldn't be the brightest idea in history. What happens if Fidel dies in 2010 (and he probably will die pretty soon) and there is political chaos? Beijing was also a quasi-dangerous and quasi-questionable choice.

New York City would be the best choice. First of all, there are several stadiums and arenas that are already in the planning stages (Yankees, Jets, Islanders, Nets, Devils, even the Mets might get a new cement block to play in) and those would definitely be finished by 2012. Plenty of hotels, although they are overpriced, it happens everywhere during the Olympics, and the city can definitely handle large crowds.

It will either be London, New York or Paris. I hope it is London aswell, and if it's about giving everyone a chance to host a major sporting even, then it's about time the UK hosts the Olympics.

You really think that we'd be able to pull off the olympics in London?

Why the defeatist attitude? If the Greeks can just about manage it, then why cant Britain?

I'm honestly surprised the Brits actually put in a bid for London, especially after all those attempts at getting the Olympics in Manchester (In fact, some people thought that Manchester would be getting the British bid for 2012 as a result of the Commonwealth Games).

I think Havana would be an excellent idea. Before all the reactionary anti-Castro crowd gets all up in arms, my theory is, what better way to expose the people of the Cuba to what is available in the rest of the world than by showing them what capitalism run wide can do to a city.

When hundred of thousand of tourist bringing cash show up, I think that they'll very quickly reject their communist past and realize that the grass is greener on the other side.

However, Cuba will never get the nod if for the simple fact that the existence of trade sanction by the US against Cuba would prohibit US companies (and their $$$$$$$) from spending any money on those games. The IOC knows that without US sponsorship, putting on the games is almost impossible.

Paris looks perfect to me.
as Jcs17 said, there is too little certainty about Cuba situation in 2012.
I would love to have the games in South America, but as PU said, it seems they'll get the 2014 world cup (with almost no competition, bad thing for us Sad), but this is not really a big issue: USA(94-96), Mexico(68-70) and there is always the issue about security and delinquency in the city.
NY could be good, but there have been too many Olympics in USA lately. The same with Madrid or Moscow.
London also sounds good.
Istanbul... I don't know, It's amazing the efforts made by Turkey to promote themselves as a modern country. But I don't think they are gonna get it.

How many cities will pass to the final tomorrow?

My preference would be Leipzig because I'm confident that Germany would be an excellent host and very efficient in organising & setting up the infrastructure for the games. Leipzig might not be as cosmopolitan or world-class city like London or NYC but all IOC is looking for is a host that would be able to handle such a huge event and would not risk handing over the games to cities like Athens which is plagued with delays. That's why I think London will not get it because the UK is just not very good at handling such projects - just look at the severely delayed Wembley Stadium, the Millennium Dome and the internal affairs are always dominated that more money should be spent for the NHS (health service), schools and universities. NYC stands a very good chance for hosting the games too, but I would prefer to see it in Leipzig.

My prediction for finalists : NYC, London, Paris, Leipzig, Istanbul, Moscow
My prediction for winner : NYC
My preference for winner : Leipzig

Leipzig, Havana are outside chances and not very realistic.

London and Paris are fantastic candidates and will do a good job.

As a rule, I think US cities should NOT be allowed to host too many games after Atlanta BUT I think New York has strong symbolic value after sept 11 and, if anything, the games should reaffirm it's place in the world.

Madrid and Moscow could be dark horses. (Madrid is a bit too close time-wise to Barcelona).

WhichEVER city wins....will have a near impossible task if topping Sydney.
The games in Athens will be easy to better; this is obvious, even before they are due to begin.

I totally agree with Jcs17 and think that Mogadishu should host the 2012 Olympic Games. There will just be a slight bit of construction to be done  Big thumbs up and I think that the US would boycott it. Oh well.

My vote goes to Leipzig, although it is the only candidate without an international flight connection.

It was such a stupid decision to make Leipzig the German candidate. What a waste of money.
Especially with all other candidates (besides Havana) being Metropoles. The German candidate should have been Hamburg or Frankfurt which both are well known in contrast to Leipzig.
But instead of giving it to the cities with the best chances they made political decision. Well done  Angry

You really think that we'd be able to pull off the Olympics in London?

I think that the recent Manchester games proved that we know how to host a major sporting event, and host it well.
I would love London to get the games - after all, has been 50 years (?) or so since the UK had it last. I know there are some countries that have never hosted them, but then there are some that have before more than once.
London would be a very capable city to host.

Host City For 2012 Olympics

Tue May 18, 2004 8:47 pm

I believe Madrid has a chance, save Istanbul it is the biggest European city that has never hosted an Olympics (4 million inh.), while Paris and London have had two both.
Barcelona games were a big success and very well organised so it is another point to Spain, and the emotional impact of the 11-M terror attack will help too.
On the cons, Barcelona '92 did not happen long ago, but in any case 20 years of difference should be enough.

Calm down. Maybe these famous Cities like Hamburg or especially Frankfurt/Main had made it to the final round, then what? Do you really think they would have a fair chance against London, Paris, Madrid, Moscow or NYC? Naa, never! So, Leipzig got his chance and that's it. In Germany only Berlin has a realistic chance to be the host for the games, but not a village like HAM or AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA.

777heavy,

I hope they show the points each city got in the different categories. I think the big minuses were infrastructure and hotels, two of the most important points. And in these points especially FRa would have done a lot better.
You are right, nobody knows if they would have had a chance but it would have been at least a bigger chance than LEJ to make the final round.
Germany hasn't hosted the Olympics since 1972 (compared to Russia, Spain and the U.S. and France) which was not relevant in this round. And you won't find a city with a better infrastructure than FRa.

There is a interesting article on http://www.faz.net about this topic and decision. You're right, Leipzig weakest points are infrastructure and accommodation, the IOC says at the moment the games are a half number to big for the city. The article also says, the next chance to host the games in Europe will be 2024, that's a lot of time to prepare and build up a proper candidate, where Germany stands closed behind. And this city should be Berlin.

Just my 2 cents!
Well done Germany!

777heavy,
not sure if Berlin will get another chance after the catastrophic bid for the 2000 Olympics.

The mention of the next chance in 2024 for Europe is only valid as long as NYC does NOT get the games in 2012. If the Big Apple gets it in 2012, then there is a good chance the next Olympics will be in Europe.
