Randy Johnson Throws A Perfect Game

Wed May 19, 2004 11:08 am

Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks threw a perfect game tonight for the first time in his major league career against the Atlanta Braves. This is the second no-hitter of his career. The last perfect game was tossed in the American League back in 1999. There hasn't been a perfect game in the National League since 1991. Randy threw 117 pitches and struck out 13.

I just finished watching the game on TBS....unbelievable stuff tonight!

Good to hear Randy shutout the Braves. I'm a fan of two teams...the Pirates and whoever is playing the Braves.  Wink/being sarcastic

On another note, does anyone else think Randy Johnson's name AND his nickname sound like porn names?

Iv'e often wondered about the term "perfect game." Since there are 9 innings per game, and 3 outs are required per inning, should a perfect game not mean he struck out 27? And let's say he had thrown 27 total pitches and every one was a pop up to center field, how is that a "perfect" game? And just for giggles let's say he had walked 17 batters in a row (I know, the manager would be in long before that but lets just suppose) causing 14 runs to be scored, and yet nobody got a base hit. That would also be a perfect game although the team may have lost by 14 runs.

OK, ignore me, I'm beeing silly. But it is the truth.

That would also be a perfect game

A perfect game is one where the pitcher allows no base runners, whether that be via hits, walks, errors, HBP or divine intervention.

IMissPiedmont,

I see what you're saying, but you're going under the assumption that even though a pop-out is an out, it still means that the batter hit the ball and "beat" the pitcher.

A perfect game refers to a batter never getting on base, by means of walking or getting a hit.

But having batters hit po-flies are a SKILL of the pitcher. Pitchers know how to throw in a way to LURE the batter to hit it in a way that will no produce a run. So, a po-fly is jsut as good as a strikeout in terms of the pitcher's skill.

Great pitching, shutting down every single batter by strikeout or popping out is most certainly a PERFECT game.

Hats off to Randy Johnson.

Man, that would sum it up for me. If I threw a perfect game and already had a World Series ring, I'd hang up my spikes right there. Go out on top Randy...

Hey, I like this kind of stuff. Show me a historic game on ESPN Classic, and I'll watch it.

Btw, on that El Perfecto that Len Barker of the Indians threw, there were about 7,500 people at old Municpal Stadium that night, although about 300,000 people in Greater Cleveland will swear they were there.

...No, I'm not one of them, I was away at college, and watched it on a tiny little color TV.  Big grin

I kinda feel bad for the older members of the site.

I was listening to a classic rock station the other day, and a Pearl Jam song came on. This was a song I listened to when I was in 5th grade. I'm 20, and I felt pretty old when I heard it then. I'm sorry to those who grew up with Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles  Big grin

The were saying on the news today that there have been seventeen no hitters in MLB history. Maybe your list was for the NL?

Alpha 1's list is not for the NL, seeing as the the Yankees, Indians, and Boston are listed. I do think it is incomplete though.

Oh, and after the last two games, that collective THUD we all heard was Braves Fan jumping off the bandwagon. I'm willing to bet about 65% of them will all of a sudden end up long time "Yankees Fans".

Here's a run down
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/pitching/piperf.shtml

A no-hitter and a perfect game are similar, but there can be base runners in a no-hitter where as there are none in a perfect game.

This shows you how bad the Braves are this year, thank you Time-Warner.

Damn, seeing Len Barker's name reminded me of the bonehead trade the Braves made in 1983 acquiring Barker in exchange for Brett Butler. One of the worst trades in Atlanta sports history (was the worst until the Falcons traded Brett Favre to Green Bay).

Harvey Haddix and Pedro Martinez both pitched perfectly for nine plus innings only to lose their perfect games during the late innings.

Damn, I bet that felt like a kick in the groin.
