Indian Railways Bans All Plastic Products

Wed May 26, 2004 2:20 pm

Laloo Prasad Yadav, the new Indian Minister for Railways, has made his first official act of office an order to ban all plastic and styrofoam products from Indian Railways property.

Plastic cups used to serve drinks to passengers aboard trains and railways stations will be replaced by earthenware pots manufactured in Yadav's home state of Bihar.

Plastic plates used to serve food will now be replaced with leaves. Yadav believes that this will help Indian Railways be more environmentally friendly.

Yadav is known for his quirkiness following his stint as Chief Minister of Bihar state when he commandeered Patna Golf Club's course for use as a grazing ground for goats. He is currently facing criminal charges for embezzlement of approximately Rs.100 million (US$2 million).

Among other programs announced on his first day of office were plans to grant free systemwide travel to all senior citizens, freedom fighters and journalists.

Is May 24/25 in India the equivalent of April 1st in the West?  Smile

Unfortunately the word "freedom fighters" has been hijacked by media to somehow defend terrorist groups with a justified "cause". But in this case I don't think it's remotely related to that. I'm sure they mean the army.

it is a very important and good sign when a country as large as india starts thinking about enviromental issues. i am glad that the new indian government is aware of the importance of such issues and, hopefully, proves to be a leader in enviromental progress in asia over the coming years.

L-188,

In India, that term is usually used for those who resisted British Colonialism, whether through armed struggle or Gandhi's method. My grandfather fit somewhere between the two.

If this really happens it is fantastic news:

- trash around the railways will be reduced
- using alernative resources was almost forgotten after polyethine conquered the world.

I once talked with and Indian army official on a research project. He told me that 'Indians are used to littering', like their clay cups, babana leaves etc... Finally, so-called 'modernity' and the idea to produce all this with the industry came: now, they still do the same but the stuff (polyethine) does just not rotten. They were used to take jute bags to shopping, today they use polyethine bags...

Idiots like Coke and Pepsi are trying to oust the working Indian bottle refund system by introducing their 2 littre plastic bottles... I hope India does tackle such attempts

There are so many means to live environmental friendly, and a country like India will make big benefits. Environment does not have to be in contradiction to development, indeed India can go for 'sustained growth' in taking a leaddership in this alternative sector. Polution and unsustained growth is a big problem. Our kids will be happy!  Smile Save the planet  Smile

After living long in Germany: this is a very good example for a relatively quite well functioning environmental sector

Edit: The term freedom fighter in India of course solely refers to the anti-colonial struggle

Sean this project is not Laloo prasad Yadavs idea. Indeed it has been around for a long long time and environmental groups and various NGO's have been campaigning for DECADES to introduce this measure on the railways. This would not only reduce the pollution, it would also create employment in the areas surrounding the railway stations. The biggest plus point is that the Railways cleanup bill also comes down.

It is also incorrect to say that all earthenware would be sourced from Bihar. The Railways has specific rules specifying that local items have to be sourced from the region itself.

If anything, Laloo Yadav needs to be credited for introducing something that was in the files for so many decades!

Indians ARE used to littering.

Singaporeans were used to littering too.

But in 20 years, they got used not to littering. Civic sense has to come from the top.

Some ten years ago CocaCola and Pepsi introduced those 1,5 liter plastic bottless in Germany as well. The German government passed a law forcing the manufacturers to take the empty bottles back through a deposit. The alternative for the compasnies was to have their bottles taxed to pay for the removal of the rubbish. Now the bottles get reused by the manufacturers. The deposit is something around 15 Eurocents per bottle.

Thats it !

Brilliant.

If the Indian govt made a mandatory 5 paise redemption value to plastic bottles, believe me, there would be a cottage industry busy cleaning up all of India !!

Haha...you are totally right Jaysit. I already see organized groups of people armed with pickups full of plastic, glass, and aluminum. I say someone with connections to the Indian govt. should introduce this. Imagine that...Anet making descisions for India Big grin.

Well now they've taken care of cutting down on garbage from the trains. How bout lets work on not shiting on the tracks, ESPECIALLY at the station. Always funny to be waiting for your train and to look down and see a fat turd staring back at you. I didn't know that the rail system even used cups and plates. I rode from Delhi to Jahnsi and back an never saw a plate or cup. Also, isn't there going to be a huge influx of people riding the trains if they become free for senior citizens? A lot of the people riding seemed to be older, making up a good part of revenue I'm sure. How old is senior?

The last time I went on a train in India, I was small enough to fall through the hole...so I never dared using it. The last time I went there, it was all air travel. Jet Airways!  Big thumbs up

Actually, even trains in Europe just used a chute under the lavatory bowl up to a few years ago, with a sign not to use the toilet when the train is standing in a station in the lavatory. Only recently, with the introduction of the ICE in Germany, were aircraft type vacuum lavs introduced on trains. The problem with the old system on ICEs was the high speeds, if ther train was going through a tunnel (there are many of them!) the turd would be blown right back into your face. Once developed, the technology was used on other trains as well and AFAIK the older cars are being phsed out. I never linger under railway bridges if a train is passing.

Hell MD11Engineer , I thought we were the only one's with the holes in the loo.
And in Delhi we have a place called Pragati maidan , pretty close to New Delhi railway station, where there is a traffic stop below a railway overbridge. That is probably the only place in Delhi where people actually stop much before the stop line on the signal. I remember atleast 2 incidents , one of which was a beautiful merc being bombed besides another car. The poor occupants did not know what to do , the look on their faces said it all  Smile

Turds are biodegradable; plastic isn't.

Plus, what would India be without people poopin' all along the railway tracks.

Switzerland, perhaps?
