What Do You Think Of The USA?

Thu May 27, 2004 1:02 am

For people living outside of the USA, I was wondering what you think of it here and where are your favorite cities to visit?

It´s a great country with a lot of great people that desperately deserves a better government at this time. I hope for the best and I´m confident that things will get better again.

So far, I´ve been to Chicago and to the SF bay area, and I´ve got very positive memories of both.  Big thumbs up

Well, as US american citizen and former resident of Ohio and Colorado, I say the following:

The country indeed is beautiful. My favorite state without competition is california, especially the bay area. Some of the east coast is nice too... I am planning to come back to the West Coast

And, as Klaus says, the government sucks. Here abroad, I feel ashamed for it and ask myself: why do so many people hate us? No wonder, we think we are the world police, we can act in the name of god and democracy to pursue our own interests, we have a terrorist as leader, we think we are the most important people etc etc etc.

When I come back I will do my best to change things. But the autocratic system does not permit major changes...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the USA, except its current administration. It has it pros and cons, like any other country in the world.

The one thing that worries me the most about the USA, is the visible and growing gap that exists between the haves and the have-nots (sp?). Recently I read a paper from an economist (I know, I had time to waste...) who said that the American miracle is the fact that 200 millions poors accept to wave the flag alongside the 80 millions riches who exploit them. Even Warren Buffet, in his recent letter, mentioned his concerns about that. Something like: "If there is a class struggle in the USA, obviously my side is winning". Anyway...
Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

Apart from GWB I like the USA. I have only visited Florida (though I will change this). My favorite city was Key West. The people were extremely friendly to me. Even the most patriotic Americans - guys with an oversized flag and huge banners like "God bless our troops" in front of their house were very friendly to me although I am a German. I'm not sure whether all of my fellow countrymen would be so nice to US-Americans nowadays. I liked the positive attitude of the Americans.
But I have to admit that I had some problems with wasteful way of live in the USA.

BTW How long will it last until this thread turns into a nasty USA-rest of the world bashing?

How do you know that??? It is common sense to say that nowadays but what about the romans, Egypt, the portuguese, the britsh empire, Napoleon...

Also isn't it strange that all the world hates us because of GWB and he still gets 50% in vote intentions? What does the world know that we don't?

Fantastic, Dirkou. Let me reemphasize this statement! Nice to see other americans apart from me who see things critically and don't go: we are the best nation in the world, the best people and we rule!

Well, the world knows at least one thing more: Iraq doesn't have WMD! The second we know - almost in consensus - is that GWB is a threat to world peace

It's the country where I was born and raised, and wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm proud to be part of a nation with such a heratige, and proud of the people who protect it, and honored to have that opportunity for myself one day...

There were 8 years, 1992-2000, where I couldn't stand the government, and this country was starting to smell, but now things are getting better. As long as the Republicans stay in office, this country will be alot more comfortable Big grin

Yeah, I love the place.
Things a little more open and relaxed than over here.
So far, have been to:
Boston, New York, San Francisco, Vegas, San Diego, LA, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, New Orleans, Denver and Oahu.

Not saying it is / isn't the best country in the world - don't want to get into that - but always have a great time over there. Actually, a few years ago I turned down a job in Boston or New York. What was I thinking - jeez!

Hard to say a favourite - all great places. Miami / South Beach is hyper-cool, San Diego is beautiful, San Franciso trendy and wacky, New York, well no words needed, and to me, Boston just ooozes money.
Not that the other places weren't nice - Orlando is a fun place, Vegas is extraordinary, Denver - what a location, Chi-town great bars and music, New Orleans 100% fun and Oahu / HNL has the climate. LA is probably the only one that I wasn't over keen on - maybe I was looking in the wrong places. However I would have to say that the first few were amongst my favourites.

Next on the list is DC - don't quite know why I haven't got there already. Always flying through IAD, but never stopping. Weird.

But to be honest, I have always found the welcome to be warm as well - much more so that many of the tight - ar*es in the UK. People just strike up a conversation anytime anywhere. Try that in the UK and see what happens!

The fuck cares? ...we're American, we'll do whatever we goddamn please!

Exactly the kind of arrogance that make many despise the US. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I love America (as in the country). I've been to New York city, Florida, California, Dallas, Niagara Falls and Oklahoma (don't ask!), and generally the people are friendly and take an interest in foreigners (in the case of OK, this is normally expressed as a question - "You ain't from round these part are yer?" Big grin) Next on my list is New Orleans (watch out CB  Smile)

The only problem I have with the US is the current administration's policies. I hate your politics, but I love your country and most of your people.

Another common sense. Vaporize all the world? Who cares about that?
That's like saying I've a weapon at home and I can kill all my family...but what about that? Would that make me happy? The ruling of the world is in your head not in weapons.

If you tell me we have companies that are all over the world I agree but weapons...come on...you need to travel a little to know what the world is...

Fair enough, not a great deal at the moment if, as you say, you don't give a fuck. However, a sound piece of advice is "Be nice to people on the way up, because they are the same people you meet on the way down." America will most likely not be the World's only super power for ever - you simply cannot continue to run the current budget deficit rate. It's entirely possible that China and India could overtake the US in your lifetime.

exactly. thats what makes america great, and moreover, as cb stated earlier, what have we done with that power? on the balance it would be foolish to even suggest america has abused its power since being in such a situation of power. generally, if anything our power has been focused on aiding the rest of the world either personally via military aide or monetarily.

USA is a great country that I really would like to visit.

BUT, I think the American society is sick. I don't have anything against individuals of course, but I really dislike the way of living the US society promotes: everything has to be bigger, it's like if the society was commiting suicide. More pollution, more goods, more food, bigger cars, ...

It will probably lead the country (unfortunately) to a sad future.

I personally love the American people and have heard many great thing about the USA as a country, and would love to visit it - but you people make that hell IMO! We were supposed to visit Florida this summer but everyone warned us against it because were Arabs visiting America and everyone said security was very harsh, and visas were very hard to obtain.

Basically, the only thing I honestly hate about the US is their government, with good ol' GWB in charge. But other than that I greatly respect the country and its acheivments.

I like America. If the few countries I have visited, I like America the best. It's the small things about America that I really like.

For example, in no other country in the world can you get a 64 Oz. Fountain drink for 89 cents FILLED WITH ICE!! We have Waffle House and Shoneys.
Every single store is air-conditioned and heated. It's new. The roads are 2,000 times wider than most places. America is the most convenient country in the world in my opinion.

I too like the UNITED STATES of America. (I also think the Continent of AMERICA is pretty nice too  Laugh out loud ).

The place is nice with some great scenery and places to visit and the individual people are very nice too, but that is where it ends.

The attitude of "Americans" in general is what spoils things.

The "We're bigger, better, have more money can do what we like" attitude is very bad.

Like Scbriml said, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

The government is also bad too, they also think they can do what they want when they want without having to answer to the rest of the international community.

If Americans dropped the "We're bigger and better than the rest of the world" attitude, then it would make it an even better place.

I think the US is a great nation. I am admiring their way of thinking, since the narrowminded people in the Netherlands drive me mad from time to time. Over here we have lack of ambitions and if we have, most of the time the bureaucracy and enormous amount of stupid regulations kill it.

I visited the states several times including New York City, Seattle, Orlando, Kansas, Miami, Denver and Minneapolis and I must say I love the people and I am sincerely thinking of moving to the US after finishing my studies (which is very much internationally orientated anyway).

The places I have been in the US is, Key West, Miami, Orlando, NYC, Morristown NJ, Chicago, Seattle, LA, San Diego, Tucson, Phoenix, Colorado Springs.

Edit: I forgot to mention Washington DC as well.

I don't get it, are Americans the only people in the world to have pride in their country?? Of course there will be people who think that this country is better than anyone else, but you know what, there are people like that every where in the world. You should hear my family from Spain talk about their country. Hey, lets face it, we all have pride, and so many Americans talk big of it, but it's nothing that other folks worldwide wouldn't do. As for our government, yeah, many of us are not too thrilled with them during these times, but this is why we have elections every four years, and hopefully the folks in Florida will get it right this time.

I like it. I probably wouldn't move from America just because I wouldn't want to take it up the ass in taxes.

Things I like about America:
-Blatant capitalism
-Consumerism
-Big ass malls
-Big ass SUVs, and the fact that everyone drives them
-Relatively cheap gas
-Skyscrapers
-Relatively low taxes (although they should be lower!)
-Cheap housing
-About 900 channels of television
-American politics
-Our nations heritage--Manifest destiny, baby!  Big grin
-Not a lot of socialist policy
-Beautiful beaches, beautiful mountains
-Lots of stuff to do--I mean, you could stay in America your whole life and not run out of things to see
-"Jingoism" and thinking we are the best. Its really not a bad thing.
-Lots of airlines
-Hot women
-Cheap beer

AA Triple 7: If you want an honest answer, in very general terms USA is not very well rated among South Americans. Brazil treating you like that at the airports is a sign. Castro, Chaves are examples. Mexico's: "Gringo go home" concept is an example.

I think USA is a great huge country, that does it incredibly good when taking its own business and looking itself, but sort of arrogant country when looking the rest of the world.

Some of you are right: you can do it, you have the power. But what about the failures? how do you talk of democracy when your current president was not elected with the majority of the votes of the people? the violence of the schools isn't a symtom of a sick society as well? And it's sad to see someone cheering the capacity of building malls and having many TV channels. Richness is not only money, it's real heritage: the pyramids, the Louvre, the colosseum, the china's wall. Mexico also have TV channels and can build big malls. Can you buy, have or build Chichen Itza in USA? If that's all your heritage (which I think is not), anybody in the world can buy your heritage.

It was more brave of Columbus to discover America, having no idea where he was going and without instruments but his intuition and wisdom, than Armstrong landing on the moon.

On the other hand: the sense of unity, the pride of its people, they way you are able to solve most of your troubles is one unique, a lesson for many of us. They way of a land of immigrant became the richest country of the world, the way USA gives its people real chances is just amazing.
Nobody can deny that you people have one of the best countries around, immigration is still a sign of it. People wanting to become American is a sign. English as a world global language is not a job made by England.

Feel proud of the USA, you have plenty of reasons for doing it. My only side note is don't bash the rest of the world, USA is better only in some attributes, not all of them, and this is enough reason for respecting the rest of the world, and not saying "you are lower".

While I don't always agree with certain things the government does, it doesn't stop me loving the overwhealmingly friendly people, beautiful countryside and amazing culture.
