Should Maris's Record Be Reinstated?

Thu May 27, 2004 11:15 am

I was listening to the radio and they were debating about Bond's breaking the record with the whole steriod issue. I was wondering what the a.net community thought about reinstating the record.

NO, just remember in order to hit a HR you must still make contact. So what if Bonds or Sosa or whoever is juicing you must still make contact to get it out of the park, If Maris played today he would maybe hit 25 hrs a season. The compitition today is much better and the athleates are better then they were back then. Roger Maris would be blown away in todays game.

I'm with Fresh, its a different era now, Bonds is the best HR hitter, possibly ever.

McGwire and Sosa broke it before Bonds, and the answer is no, it should not be reinstated. If you're going to do that, make up some excuse for Babe Ruth to have the all time home run record, then. That's how stupid that would be.

Irrelavent - Yes you have to make contact, but if a player makes contact and say he averages hitting the ball 385 feet, unless he pulls every ball, he won't have that many home runs. If he starts juicing and is not able to hit the ball on an average of 425 feet, his home run totals are going to explode. See Brett Boone.

If they did decide to nullify Bonds record, it would not be to go back to Maris's but to McGwires. Although he was on Andro, it was not illegal at the time in the sport. I think that a lot of people will put an asterik next to Bonds records in their mind, but they will probably never be nullified, even when they prove he is on steriods.

Bonds and McGwire's records are tainted regardless of the legality at the time or what MLB ultimately does. Baseball giants (pardon the pun) they are not.
