Ever Been To Tennessee?

Fri May 28, 2004 4:54 am

I was just wondering how many people have been to Tennessee? And how many have been to Chattanooga, Tennessee specifically?

I live here and think its a good place but was just wondering what those who have been here and visited thought about about Chattanooga and Tennessee in general.  Big grin

Anyone feel free to comment please...

Thanks,

I've been to Tennessee many times. Eastern Tennessee in beautiful! The best pancakes I've ever had was in Lake City, Tennessee just east of I-75. My most memorable trip was in 1982 for the World's Fair. Check out that huge tower with the golden disco ball on top. I forgot the name of it though.
Chattanooga is a neat little town but I haven't spent too much time there.
Also check out the Great Smokey Mountains and Mt. Mitchell, highest peak in the east. I know it's in North Carolina but pretty damn close.
Nashville has a thriving music scene as well. Memphis of course has Graceland and a club owned by B.B. King.

I was in Nashville about 7 or 8 years ago for a few days...one of the nicest downtowns Ive ever been to, for sure...although the experience was slightly scarred by a bird taking a fly-by number 2 on my shoulder while there...

Tennessee Sucks. Been there 6 times, each of them as we passed through the state on Florida road trips. Got stuck in traffic there once for SIX HOURS!

That's right, it is!
I was 9 years old when I went up on that. I remember being scared because Tennessee had a small earthquake earlier that year from the New Madrid fault that runs through Western Tennessee.

Silly I was afraid of a major earthquake in Knoxville. Big grin

I was just in Tennessee about a week ago - a good friend of mine was moving to Phoenix from Knoxville, and I decided to fly out to help him pack up and drive out.

It's a great place, but I still can't get used to seeing orange and white everywhere!  Nuts

Or as my friend and his dad asked (both are UT alums) -

Q: "Why do Volunteers fans wear orange?"

A: "So they can go directly from the football game to the duck blind, their roadside trash crew, or their part-time Home Depot job."  Big grin

Did the Chattanooga thing about 15 years ago - took the tram up to the top of Lookout Mountain...great view from up there. Also did the Ruby Falls tourist trap thing....a big waste of time.

I also spent one night in the Alcoa/Maryville area....right across from McGhee-Tyson Municipal Airport. That night did not make the "top 200 nights in my lifetime" list........booooring.

I have family in Tennessee and I visit there often. The Cumberland Plateau and the eastern part of the state is beautiful. I used to live in Memphis when I was about 2 or 3 so I can't remember any of it. I was briefly in Chattanooga down by Lookout Mountain and I wasn't impressed with the area. It seemed pretty run down and there was nothing but some strip malls and warehouses. I'm sure it was because I was only in one part of the city and I realize the whole city probably isn't like that.

Knoxville is okay, although downtown didn't look very impressive. The sunsphere looked kinda shabby. The outskirts towards Alcoa didn't look too bad, although it was suburbia.

There is some steotypical backwards Southern stuff as you get out of the cities towards the plateau. I remember this place with lots of rebel flags and some laundry drying off of the roof of a trailer. Then I realized it was Rhea County.

I fly into Nashville but I have never seen the city itself. We came close to moving to Murfreesboro a couple years ago. I was a little excited about it since I head good things about the area and Nashville. The only thing I can really say from experience is that Nashville has a really nice airport. (Knoxville's is really nice, too). Overall, I like Tennessee. Lots of Southern hospitality. I hope to see Nashville someday and Memphis as well despite its reputation. It can't be that bad with their BBQ and being a mecca for the blues.

I used to live in Clarksville, TN and Bowling Green, KY and would go to Nashvegas all the time for shopping and other things when I needed a "city fix." The airport is nice too...a little big for the traffic. I've taken AA's BNA-LAX flights many many times back when it was up to 3x a day, and they were going head-to-head with WN on that route.

Have only driven through and flown through Memphis.

Chatanooga is a nice little place. I really like the aquarium there; been there a couple of times. I've driven through Chatanooga many many times en route to and from Atlanta.

Knoxville's new terminal is really nice...way better than the previous piece. I have family that live there but I don't visit them. I like Gatlinburg and the tackiness of Sevierville and all the tourist traps and such.

Both Tennessee and Kentucky are beautiful states, especially the Smokey Mountains in TN. But I'm very glad to be living in CA once again.

Yeah, I live in Eastern Tennessee. Tri-Cities to be exact. One of the most beautiful areas in the world. The only thing I would change would be the isolated pockets of ignorant rednecks. Other than that, its a great area.

I forgot to mention the Great Smoky Mountains. I spend a day there on a couple of occasions and it was a very nice park. I was there during fall and it was beautiful. Tried to get up to Clingman's Dome but it was rainy and you couldn't see anything up there. I went hiking on some of the trials near Mt. LeConte. I stayed in a motel in Pigeon Forge because it was the only cheap place to stay near the park. The place was congested with traffic and way too touristy for me.

Been there many times, the last time was a work related trip about two months ago up to Lavergne, where our company has a major distribution center. The worst part about that trip was the drive, especially with all of the road construction on I-24 around Monteagle.

Lived in middle Tennessee 'part time' for the last sixty years and am in the process of moving to Murfreesboro permanently. The area (probably the entire state) has been in the process of a good, radical change, a plus; a negative is that so many people are finding out about it, the more people make the move and the problems (traffic congestion, etc. follow).

You mentioned Chattanooga: a lot of history there and the scenery is pretty fabulous. A visit to Lookout Mountain is a must. If you are a railfan, the railroad musem is great and includes a short excursion with steam power. Food of all ethnic backgrounds is abundant and I haven't experienced a dish I haven't enjoyed. Oh, yeah, Jack Daniels distillery north of Chattanooga off I-24; unfortunately Lynchburg is in a dry county and you can't even 'taste-test' for free, but the tour will blow your mind.

Aforementioned 'pockets of rednecks' do exsist, abeit infrequently, and I believe you'll find that area of the south very hospitable and friendly. I only regret that it took me so long to retire and 'return' to TN. Regards...Jack

My wife and I went to BNA almost exactly a year ago. Had an excellent time.

If you're there, if you like good food, find the restaurant "Antonio's". Don't know exactly where it is in BNA (I just used the "Never Lost" system on our Hertz car to find it  Big grin ) EXCELLENT!! Expensive, but outstanding food and service.  Big thumbs up

I come from a long line of Tennesseans,my mom is from Murfreesboro and my Dad's family is from West Tennessee. It's a alright place, I would'nt want to live there because I prefer a more urbane lifestyle, but if you don't mind have to drive everywhere and having to shop at Wal-Mart and Home Depot, it's fine.

A few years ago I was in Memphis to attend my grandmother's funeral. When my family and I went into downtown Memphis, it seemed pretty nice with the ball park in the area and all the resteraunts. I didn't like the construction going on since it kind of made a mess of the traffic. Also my grandfather and some of my mom's cousins and aunts live in Memphis.

I went to Nashville during New Years '03-'04 for the Music City Bowl. Pretty nice city, Opryland area was nice too (including the Gaylord Opryland Hotel - damn that was a sweet place).

I liked the Briley Parkway they had to bypass the freeway system coming from the north to the airport. Gameday traffic going downtown was a bitch though, and quite a few people were stuck on the freeways even up until halftime.

I have been in the state twice during my stays in North Carolina. Once I made a few miles into the state while driving around the Appalachians. The other time I visited the Smokey Mtns and slept in Gatlinburg.
The little I have seen of the state I liked it much. Another great thing was the music in the FM, Knoxville stations do a much better job that the NC ones!!

The one time I went to Chattanooga the whole place was flooded. It was some time in August of 2001. You couldn't use a lot of the streets and the "liberry" (as we were told it's called) was closed on a Sunday.
My favorite thing in Tennessee, besides that fact that the people from the Jack Daniels ads really work there, is the great invention of firework superstores with gas stations.

Tenn is a well kept secret. Nashville is a great town, much more to it than the country music stuff. The area around Vanderbilt University is cool.

Chattanooga is pretty charming too. Very nice baseball stadium. It's kind of too bad that Atlanta is getting an aquarium because that's going to pull a lot of tourism away from Chatt, unfortunately.

TN is nice. I have been to Knoxville a few times. It is a pretty area. I have never been to Chattanooga though. I have never been to the western half of the state, but I hear that it is boring and the humidity makes it miserable in the summer.

Even better is the fireworks store/discount beer outlet. I can just imagine people getting drunk and shooting fireworks at each other!

My moms side of the family is from Tennessee and we used to go to Chattanooga every year. I think Tennessee is one of the most beautiful states in the country. The biggest problem I have with Tennessee is the Christian Fundamentalists and the icy roads in the winter.

My aunt briefly lived in Memphis for 3 years and we visited her once. I found Memphis to be very dirty and not my kind of city.

In 1999 my brother and I went to Nashville with my dad for a Convention. We stayed at the Opryland Hotel and had a blast. We also took a tour of The Collesuem (Formerly Adelphia Collisuem), The Ryman Auditorium, and walked around downtown. I really enjoyed downtown Nashville. I had a lot of good conversations with the Vol's fans especially since they hate the Florida Gators (I'm a Canes fan!). I was highly impressed with Nashville Int'l Airport (BNA). It is one of the best airports I have been to.

I have been in Tennessee once, back in 1993 and just for about 1.5 hours. Had to connect in BNA, enroute from BOS to DEN. Both legs were on a AA MD80  Smile.
