OJ Simpson Murders, A Decade Later

Fri Jun 04, 2004 1:56 am

It's been ten years this month since Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman were murdered:

Primary suspect: the Juiceman himself.

And then there was the nearly year-long circus of a trial which ensued, after which OJ was acquitted on all counts...

...guess he's still looking for the "real killers", at their Miami golf-club haunts?

Wasn't he appointed as the killer, or responsible for their murders, in the civil lawsuit that followed the criminal trial?

I remember reading that he wouldn't be able to pay any money to the family of the victims, since he had just transfered all of his assets to his son.

I also remember reading an interview with one of the lawyers that defended him, and he regretted that they had ever played the "race" card.

Yes, he was. And it was over quickly, too.

I think OJ was innocent. People like him (celebs, movie stars etc) can't even dial a phone themselves - literally. You wouldn't believe how useless these people are. Ron Goldman was a judo / karate fanatic, OJ a late middle aged man. It's not as though Ron would have gone down without a fight. The fact that OJ didn't seem to be injured at all makes me suspicious.

For the prosecution:
The evening of the murders, OJ flew to Chicago (and there was some odd behaviour, limo driver waited for an hour outside OJ's house, saw someone go in the back, then OJ appears at the door, having been "asleep", etc) on the red eye (AA, fact fans) and the police called him at his hotel in the morning and told him Nicole was dead. Apparently there was much "oh no oh no" from OJ but he NEVER ASKED WHAT HAPPENED! It's normally the first question people ask, unless they already know of course.

There is evidence that ties OJ to the scene (loads of DNA, spots of blood in OJ's car, and the other weird stuff above), but I think it was OJ's son who dunnit, apparently the guy weighs a tonne and has anger management problems (been arrested a few times for assault). He is a chef at a restaurant where Nicole Brown Simpson (not his mother btw) was meant to go with a big group after a school play on the night of the murders. They didn't show up (went to the restaurant where Ron worked instead) and OJ's son apparently took this as a major snub, it had been planned for ages. Maybe he went round after work and did it, then called OJ who came to the scene (er, Dad, something bad has happened, you need to come over right now)? OJ is the obvious culprit, I don't think he's been honest about everything (and if true, his reaction on the phone to the LAPD to the news of his wife's death is VERY incriminating) but that doesn't automatically make an open-and-shut case. I don't count the previous domestic problems between OJ and Nicole btw, as Michael Moore said on the subject, "If there are thirteen crimes and a man is guilty of twelve of them, it doesn't mean he's automatically guilty of the thirteenth."

Sorry, cedarjet, don't buy the conspiracy theory. Simpson's statements to the police just don't wash. Regarding your statement that "celebrities are useless" that doesn't mean they're immune from violent behavior.

If we have learned anything from the OJ trial, which we clearly haven't, is that if you have the money you can buy your freedom and in the process make a mockery of the judicial system. Even if OJ truly is innocent, he and his attorneys made a mockery of the system. But at the sametime Judge Lance Ito, the LA County District Attorney's office, and LAPD certainly played along.

There is no reason that the trial should have gone as long as it did and there is no reason that the circus environment should have been allowed to happen.

What we have learned from high profile trials is that any jury nowadays can be convinced of "reasonable doubt" by a good defense team. Even if they had a video of OJ committing those murders, the defense would have convinced the idiot jurors that the tape was doctored up by racist cops. Really, I think the reasonable doubt thing has to be re-visited by the justice system since it can be manipulated so easily.

"OJ a late middle aged man."

???

He was a star football player. And he was still very fit.

Has it been ten years? I remember how shocked I was at the verdict. I really thought they would send him to the slammer.

I remember where I was during "the Chase", never forget the people along the freeways waving and the scene when he got to his house.

The verdict was shocking too, I remember I cut class that day because I sat in my car and listened to callers call into radio shows outraged all day. I thought it was a solid case, although his lawyers did introduce some doubt which I guess in California is grounds for an acquittal.

So are you campaigning to change the judicial system of which you have so little faith?

If you are so SURE OJ was guilty, how can you be so SURE people executed are guilty?

I was in 7th grade. everyone in West Middle School in 4th hour had their TV's on and watched the verdict. except mrs keltys art class....*mine* damnit. she let us listen to it on the radio though and we were all psyched because he was found innocent. For some reason all us kids were pulling for OJ. I kind of regretting it now.

One thing that always got me:

HE WAS AVOIDING THE COPS!

If someone is innocent, they have no reason to run. The police chased him all over L.A. He was guilty of something. When they read the verdict, I could not express my dissapointment: I was in school and about half of the students in the classroom were black.

You have to be kidding.  Insane So, you're saying if someone runs then they're automatically guilty? Unbelievable.

If memory serves, there were quite a few elements of the OJ case where the police doctored evidence, were there not?

I've forgotten most of it, mainly because it was more fascinating to watch how America reacted than the individual case of someone I'd never heard of. But even so, I remember at the time thinking that whilst he was probably guilty, the case hadn't been proved, and therefore acquittal was the only decision to make.

The civil case has a lower standard of proof. But (and we've had this here too), it always makes me slightly uneasy to see the civil case used as a second chance when the protagonists don't get the verdict they like in the criminal one.

Great. Not like there wasn't overkill on this topic 10 years ago when it happened. Then with the trial, and even up until now. So yeah, we definitely needed a "10 year anniversary" thread.  Insane

I am intrigued by Cederjet's post above. Did I miss something about O.J. having a grown son who may have committed the murders? I never heard about that at the time of the crime.

If memory serves, there were quite a few elements of the OJ case where the police doctored evidence, were there not?

The biggest was Dr. Henry Lee's observation of how the blood on the socks were planted. Drop blood or any liquid on any flat sock.. and it will saturate to the socks 2nd layer... leaving similar blot as the 1st layer. Now... put a foot inside the sock ( as they police suggest OJ was wearing said socks) and any blood splattered as he stomped, walked or sloshed around in it.. the blood spatterings would not match identically when the socks were removed.. it would have dried too much to have done so.

OJ never came off as a bright bulb... so if it was true that he wore his Bruno Magli shoes and bloodied them in the process and took off (and they 'found' blood in the Bronco, wouldn't there have been blood on the brake and gas pedal of the Bronco? You can't drive without them... and OJ doesn't come off to me as the type who'd think to remove his shoes or clean out the Bronco.

But the worse offense by the cops was Det. Vanatter walking around a full 24 hours with OJ's blood sample in his pocket. That is an unbelievable oversight by a seasoned veteran!

Okay, actually just having Mark Fuhrman on the case was the biggest f*ckup.. esp. his testimony.... boy did that hit them between the eyes? I'd pay to see that again!

For those that think OJ was set up, basically that means the cops knew in advance, that on the night of the murders, OJ's whereabouts would be unaccounted for at least 2 hours. That's absurd. And a cop that used the "N" word ten years earlier had it in for OJ. That's also absurd. The whole trial was a slap in the face to the justice system and the families of the two victims.

It is? Then why of all places 'In front of the whole planet'.. did he lie about it??? Not only that, but if a cop of all people would lie about something soooo trivial as 'Have you ever said this word?'... and he goes and lies about anywaym and gets busted in the worse way, nothing he says (according to our justice system) is valid. So again, why would he jeopardize so much???

How much? My old man has the entire trial on tape.

The entire trial was a sham. Lance Ito has to be one of the most incapable judges in American history--first of all, allowing cameras in the courtroom was idiotic. Secondly, he allowed the defense to proceed with absolutely irrelevant lines of questioning in order to slander prosecution witnesses. When you think about it, the fact that Fuhrman said a few racist jokes ten years ago should've not been allowed to be introduced as evidence. For example, say I make a female joke--my friend gets fingered for domestic abuse ten years down the line, I am brought in as a character witness for the defense. Does that mean that my words are now worthless just because I made an off-color joke ten years ago? Am I labeled a sexist for that today? Yes, the LAPD was incompetent in the investigation, but anyone with an IQ larger than a ham sandwich would know that OJ did it.

As for you, 777236ER, for your irrelevant and whiny questions, I bestow upon you the box of tissues.

JCS17, you need to take your tissues and clean up your lies 1st of all!

Secondly, you need to watch your dads tapes to gain refence so you know what you're talking about.

Furhman was NOT telling any jokes. He was providing insight on the operations of LAPD detectives for a possible screenplay to be written (a book 1st actually then the screenplay).

Not doubt about it he was involved.. but to single him as committing it alone.. is crediting OJ way too much. That's like saying Bush has a chance in the National Spelling Bee against that kid who fainted. Plus OJs' kid is way too stupid, he would have f*cked up and blabbed at a party or someplace by now. But something's .. no a lot... is a miss in all this. The sunglass that were in the envelope that was found disappeared.. surely they had at least one strand of hair for DNA testing.

And I don't like all the political/legal backroom deals that were cut.. for instance, the freeway chase, the entire planet saw it live as it happened! And it was NEVER introduced or shown in the trial! WTF is up with that?
