Wasn't sure how he'd do after I saw the start, but I thought it was a done deal off the 4th turn & that he had it after he started to pull away.

I too kept waiting for the pullaway down the stretch. But, looking back on it now, I don't see that he was able to dictate the race, others did it for him. While he didn't look like he gave out at the end, he was just plain tracked down at the end by a horse that on this day, ran his own type of race.

Will we ever see another triple crown winner???? When Smarty Jones got more than one length in front of Rock Hard Ten, I thought it was all over. You sure can not blame the jockey....Stewart Elliott rode a superb race.

Congrats to trainer Nick Zito....5 second place finishes in the Belmont, and today a huge win.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but I think the hype of Smarty Jones in the Phildelphia area was a bit out of control! I live just a few miles from "Someday Farm" where the owners live, and in the other direction a few miles away is Philadelphia Park where Smarty Jones trained. So it's hyped up a bit, yes, but then again it's a 1 in 9 probability of winning, maybe a bit better, but still not much.

It also bugs me a bit to see them coaxing a blindfolded horse into it's starting block. I'm not saying it's animal cruelty or anything, because I'm sure that horse gets excellent care, but it didn't seem to be very interested in starting that race!

I seriously thought Smarty had it until Birdstone came up in the final stretch... Oh well, it was a good race though.  Smile

WC Fields had on his tombstone... "Id rather be here than Philadelphia".

However, the location doesnt change the dream.... Even if Philadelphia sucks.

I came in to watch it-was out doing some yard work. I was online, and I told Sean, as Smarty turned down the home stretch, that 'SMARTY JONES WINS IT!!"....

...then I saw Birdstone closing the gap, and the lead vanished.....

There's always next year.  Smile

I blame the jockey. Although he ran a good race, it looked like he drove him a little too hard through the 4th turn, and by the time the straight away came around, the horse had already given all he had, and in the last 1/4 mile he just didn't have enough. I was watching it in an offtrack betting place and let me tell you, there were about 300 people in there who all lost money, here is what it sounded like

"yes!! go smarty, go go! ohhh he's gonna do it! go ......noo faster, ahhh smarty......ohh no.....nooo.....ohh shit ahhhh faster ahhh he's not gonna do it....no"

it was very depressing. yet still hilarious. haha

I'm an underdog guy usually, especially coming from a town where being the underdog is part of daily life, however, to see Smarty come so close, yet be so far away is tough. Hopefully we shall see a triple crown winner in our lifetimes.

P.S. - Philly is a great place, they just need that one win.

What a race, my parents were sure he would win it, but I noticed coming into the fourth turn that Birdstone was coming on really fast into fifth position, he was absolutely flying. Many races are like this with the winner being the one who makes the strongest push at the end. Very tense, and very exciting race!
