The Best Chinese Restaurant In London

Mon Jun 07, 2004 1:31 am

Any suggestions? I went to Golden Dragon last time and it was great.

Which is the best one? Any fine dinings? Seafood?

BTW where does the seafood in London come from?

I like August Moon a lot, which is located next to the hanger Lane station (Central Line).

Also you can find many chinese restaurants in China town, where restaurants offer all sorts of buffet style Lunch/Diners.

there are plenty of Chinese restaurants in London!

Does Pang's still exist? It was a fantastic Chinese restaurant around 20-25 years ago, on the corner of Maida Vale and Hall Road. My parents almost went bankrupt because we loved it so much we would eat there 3 or 4 times per week!

Lived in london from 1993-1995 and can tell you 2 restaurants that i would always frequent...

1. Ken Lo's Memories of China in Belgravia

2. Man's chinese restaurant in west wimbledon/raynes park

Memories of China is by far my favourite Chinese restaurant out of all those that I have tried (a fair amount, although I've never been to the orient).

However, there is no shortage of chinese restaurants in london and so I'm sure there are plenty that are equally as good. I've been to a decent amount during my 2 years of living there as well as every summer since I left and I think Memories of China is really up there. Better than anything I've had in Soho anyway.

Of course this is entirely subjective.

Don't know about good ones, but a bad one is Won Kee's in China Town.

Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap attitude in there and you can only pay with cash, and once you have finished your meal they turf you out, no after dinner chat - you are out !!!.

Ah yes. Won Kee, I have been there too.

Waiter-"how many?"
Me-"one please" (I have only been a loner once! The other times I was with somebody else)
Waiter-"you sit there with other strangers"

So then you sit with about 7 people you dont know on the same table. Not exactly a nice atmosphere when that happens, or at least I don't think so.

They get you in there quick, and then get you out as soon as they can. Plus it is cash only and once they didn't actually give us our change. Confused

Go to Four Seasons in Basywater for excellent roast duck. In Chinatown, you might want to visit Young Cheng and Jen. Joy King Lau is really good for tim sum too.

Try Asia de Cuba (or something close) in the St. Martins Hotel.
Modern setting ..but great duck and ribs. I'd say it's for celebrations, etc since most folks were in nice clothes (however, the same black that has permeated London for twenty years!).

Try Opium in Soho for the trendoids....well...and great food. But drink somewhere else..then go for the food.
Also, it is loud.

Fly Scandinavian...seafood is all they fuggi'n serve, apparently ham is considered something very exotic...

Most seafood here is caught in the north sea. Stay away from the murmansk eel, it'll make you glow.

United Airline: You are obsessed with seafood, and chinese food and...FOOD in general!

2 of my favourites are: Fook Lam Moon in Gerald St China town-excellent duck rice and Four Seasons in Bayswater-very good Chinese food in general.

Will you also stop saying that the Chinese food in London is better than in Australia-this is quite simply NOT true! It is, at BEST equally good but you end up paying an arm and a leg for it.

The best seafood I have had is on Coastal North American Cities like Boston, Seattle, San Fran and Vancouver-fresher and bigger. Australian seafood is also good-the lobsters in Europe are not as big and cost nearly twice as much.

Happy eating!

Yes I LOVE FOOD. Everyone does. Hehe

Try the Fook Lam Moon in Hong Kong then! Believe me its ganna be a lot more expensive. A super rich guy took 12 people including himself to Fook Lam Moon and the bill was HK$ 2.5 million. Wonder what they had!!!!!

I know Australian Chinese food is just as good. Its just that I prefer the ones in London personally.  Smile

SEAFOOD IN NORTH AMERICA is just GREAT!

So what does seafood in Europe taste like?

SEAFOOD IN NORTH AMERICA is just GREAT!
Specially in this place!

Seafood in Europe is... well... let's say that the colder the sea, the tastier the fish. A lot of the seafood served in Europe and on the US and Canadian east cost has actually been caught in the same oceans. So it all comes down to the cook really...

I had dinner in Fook Lam Moon in Hongkong (we had a steamboat and loads of Cantonese dishes). I don't recall it costing quite as much as that other dinner but it was fairly pricey compared to Ming's Chinese Takeaway on Acton High Street, London!

BTW, having lived in Australia, London's High End Chinese food (I'm not talking about the £6.99 eat all you can you fat bastard crap) blows it out of the water. The problem with Aussie Chinese food is the restrictions on using monosodium glutamate, the absence of which impairs the flavour of the food. No such restrictions apply in the UK - in fact I have replaced table salt with MSG and contrary to misinformed opinion MSG is better for you than regular salt.

It depends on what you order at Fook Lam Moon. My dad went there once with his business partners and he paid around HK$ 15000 per person.

15 000 Hong Kong dollars?!?!?!?!!!  Wow!

Was that with or without the complementary blow job??!!!?!?!

Honestly, 15 000 Hong Kong dollars, that's a FORTUNE!!! I could go first class to Hong Kong, eat at McDonald's and go back first class for that money, you gotta be NUTS if you pay 15 000 HKD for a dinner, Jesus Christ! I understand why he took them there only once!!!! I'd rather send my business partners a week to Hawaii! What were they negotiating over, the purchase of 15 B747-400:s??? The selling of a small island in the pacific?? Space tourism?

Or did they just drink a lot of expensive wine and whiskey?

But Fook Lam Moon is arguably one of the most expensive restaurant if not the most expensive restaurant in the world with the world's best seafood. Very famous. You see all the TOP TOP SUPER-RICH like Li Kar Shing, Lee Shau Kee, Stanley Ho etc etc there.

I think QE2 and a number of US presidents went there during their visits in Hong Kong
