Interleague Play Starts Tonight

Tue Jun 08, 2004 4:16 am

Well it is in that time of the year when we see the American League teams play the National League Teams for games that count. This year's division match ups :

NL West vs. AL East

NL Central vs. AL West

NL East vs. AL Central

Some good series :

San Diego Padres vs. New York Yankees ( Boomer's return to the Bronx and first match up since 1998 World Series)

Seattle Mariners vs. Cincinnati Reds ( Jr.'s first time against his former team, too bad it is not in Seattle where he could have probily hit his 500th in Seattle)

New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (first series since 1981 World Series)

Chicago Cubs vs. Anaheim Angeles ( Possible Fall Classic Match Up if the Angels some how defeat the Yanks in the Playoffs.)

Right Now I think that is the best match ups we have, but include more if think there are any more out there.

I will actually be at the two Red Sox vs. Dodgers games this weekend at Fenway. It's always fun to be at the "old ball game."

Angels some how defeat the Yanks in the Playoffs

Well hey, shouldn't be too hard since the Yanks are filled with lazy primadonnas. I mean the D-Rays beat the Yankees.

Gee, for lazy primadonnas they aren't doing to bad since they have the best record in the League. Second, in case you don't know, Anaheim lost to Cleveland yesterday 7-0 with Sabathia having a no hitter through six innings.

I'm looking forward to the Cubs vs. White Sox this year. With both teams in contention, it should make this series even more entertaining.

I think kind of applies to the Mets vs. Yankees series since the Mets this year look a little better, not that much better, but will make the series maybe interesting this year.

I believe there should be a constitutional amendment banning interleague play except for the All-Star Game and the World Series.  Wink/being sarcastic The problem with the way interleague play is set right up now is that interleague play is uneven. Example, The Cubs do not play the same teams that every other team in The N.L. plays. The White Sox do not play the same teams that every team in the A.L. plays.  Angry Come down to August and September, that could be an important factor on the Wild Card teams. I liked the initial idea where they (MLB) wanted to have regional "rivals" play a couple games a year (IE: Yanks v. Mets, Northsiders v. Southsiders, Angels v. Dodgers, The Bay Area rivalry, the teams in Texas, etc) for the fans. If they (MLB) really wants to have interleague play, then fine, no problem, dissolve the two leagues (N.L. and A.L.) and have six MLB divisions.  Acting devilish It's just my opinion.

I woulda REALLY liked to see the Indians host the Phillies this year, just to see Thome smoke Indians pitching, and see the fans tell owner Larry Dolan what a jerk he was for letting Thome go.  Big grin

I am actually going to see my first interleague game tonight....Atlanta Braves @ Detroit Tigers.....the Tigers have a "buy one $12 upper reserved seat and get one free" promotion for every Tuesday home game, so I couldn't resist. Just like going to the grocery store, and going to a Tiger game is about as exciting.

The Tigers play Atlanta, Florida and Arizona at home and Philly, NY Mets and Colorado on the road.

I went to the Texas/Pittsburgh game last night. It was a novelty, I guess, but there was nothing about it to sell tickets. I had never heard of most of the Pirate players.

Uh, Texas won in 10 innings on a Hank Blalock single.

Thome is one of the most under-rated power hitters of this generation. All he does, every year, is hit around 40 homers, and knock in 110 runs, and no one seems to notice the guy. He's haeding toward that magic figure of 500 home runs, and a ticket to Cooperstown.

And to think the Indians wouldn't give him one more year on the contract offer they made to him. He would have stayed in Cleveland for $30 million less than what Philly offered him, but this lying SOB Dolan simply didn't want him on the roster. What a joke.

Sleekjet, I too watched that game last night and saw the winning hit, the game overall was okay I guess, but it won't be able to live up to the Yankees vs. Dodgers. Anyway, I think Thome has not reached 400 yet, so 500 is still some time away, but I agree Thome is a great player was a very good during Cleveland's playoff streak in the late to middle 1990's.

Also I think Major League Baseball should make a rule that when interleague play happens between the Rockies and Yankees/Red Sox, the game should always be played here in Denver because when the Yanks were in town two years ago, it was great to see them just crush the ball into the thin air, also I don't think people in the Bronx and Boston are too excited to see the Colorado Rockies play in their stadiums.

Well whoever did up the schedule for inter-league play are absolute first-class rocket scientists. I mean in the second round of interleague play where the AL East plays the NL East, the Montreal Expos are playing host to the Toronto Blue Jays in San Juan Puerto Rico!!!!! The one time Montreal would get over 10,000 fans and they play the game on some island in the Caribbeann. I used to like the idea of interleague play to witness interesting rivalries, but with a decision like this, my whole respect for the idea has sunk like the Soviet Alfa submarine in "The Hunt for Red October".
