Anyone Been On A Maglev Yet?

Tue Jun 08, 2004 10:00 pm

My dad got back from China and told me he went 270MPH on a Magnetic Levitation Train.

Anyone else been on one?

it must be amazing going so fast over land.

yeah been on the transrapid prototype testing track, its a very nice ride!
it is a sad thing that this technology, already fully developed in the early 90ies, has not been built in germany due to certain interest groups. this is especially sad considering the high degree of efficiency this form of transportation has, compared to air transportation or road or classic railway.

i think it lacks the character of classic railway though. but it certainly beats getting to and waiting at the airport for a 30 minute flight. It would also help preserve oil reserves if a lot of short haul flights were scrificed leaving more fuel for the long haul. And if they connected the airports to a maglev system they could still act as hubs!

roberta yeah, you are right about that, but the thing requires power from somewhere, and the one in China is a FRED (F*#$ing Ridiculous Economic Disaster) so far. the expense of building the thing will not be met until sometime in the NEXT century. I would like to see them made more affordable, soon.

Yes, it's almost as awesome as flying, almost... The Transrapid testtrain reached 403 km/h (252mph) on my ride.
Unfortunately nobody wants this technology due to the high initial costs.

but the thing requires power from somewhere - Sure, but it needs clearly less power than a conventional high speed train.
