What Do You Think Of Mexico?

Thu Jun 10, 2004 2:38 pm

I was just wondering what imperssion foreginers have of Mexico. Have any of you changed your opinion once you visited Mexico. I know in most films Mexico comes out as this outdated, rural place. How many of you know that Mexico City has the tallest buildings in Latin America? That the beltway in Mexico City has two stories? Among others. I'm not sure what you think of when you think of Mexico, I would certainly enjoy finding outwhat a.net members think about this.

VIVA MEXICO !!! Smile

Mexico City is a dirty, filty, crime riddled city. Mexico has some great beaches. A lot of history, and I kinda like Vincente Fox (but I feel bad for how Bush screwed him). Mexicans often speak Spanish in a whiny and annoying way. I like mexican music. Mexican people are often very kind and freindly.

I can only speak for Cancun. Cancun sucks. Its a cheaper rip-off of Miami. The climate in August is inbearable and their are nothing but drunk college kids their. I would like to visit some of the desert parts of Mexico though and Mexico City.

Hola Acho

I was first the first time in your country this march, but CUN, not MEX, but I wasn't only interested in resorts and tequila, I also visit other places.

Did my thoughts change? ABSOLUTELY  Big thumbs up

I honestly confess you: before that trip, I didn't care that much for Mexico, for me it was just another country, probably beautiful, but not my top destination. I was never a big fun of Mariachis and Rancheras either.

Until...

What can I say, I really understood what Mexico is... I realized I didn't know... Mexico is the best, such a beautiful country, I really admire you guys for your culture, your folklore, your pride, ¡los colores! such a happy place.
I know some will say things about corruption, PRI and BS like that. I think you have an amazing culture, and next to that any political problem is just nothing.

The richest country of the world cannot afford the ancient culture you have. Feel proud of your country. Mexico DF dirty and smoggy? well, there are more places. Just an "advice": the fact that you have the tallest buildings is not important; buildings can fall down in earthquakes; the heritage doesn't.

¡ Que viva Mexico !

I've only been to Monterrey, so I can't speak for the rest of Mexico, but I thought it was great. The people were very friendly and the architecture in parts of Monterrey was very impressive. I really liked the theater (I don't remember the name of it), where the building is very tall and very thin.

Although the traffic was terrible...

The only part of Mexico I have been to is Nogales, Sonora... and just a few blocks in, to partake in underaged drinking while a college student. So it isn't like I got a very accurate, let alone sober look at Mexico. But the poverty in the immediate border areas is quite striking. Not the mention the almost surreal feel you get when you see the border fence light up like a Christmas tree at night.

Mexico is such a huge and incredibly diverse country. A (non-drunken) visit to a border town would yield a different perspective than visiting one of the major cities, or one of the beach towns. Really there is a lot to explore, and as close as it is to much of the United States, it is easy and cheap to get too.

Plus I love Mexican food, specifically Sonoran cuisine. Just can't find that kind of stuff living in upstate New York though.

Gotta love the beaches and fishing (Cabo).
Gotta hate the beggars and the drinking water....

Can seem a lot like Florida--with half the corruption!

Personally, I like PV and Cabo for a quick break.

It is one of the remarkable and bizarre things of our times- Mexico is a huge and populous country with which we share a substantial border, and few Norte Americanos know squat about it. Even here in Texas, unless you are in south Texas, the ignorance and stereotyping are disappointing.

My good fortune is that, as a child, my family took many vacations to Mexico, and I do not mean CanCun (which was at the time a fishing village), but rather, to Mexico DF (by train), to Monterrey (driving), to the Pacific coast (via the narrow-gauge railway commonly known as the "Copper Canyon" railroad).

What a lot of people seem to forget (or never to have known) is that Mexico was a well-settled and developed country when these here Estados Unidos were still, shall we say, forming.

With increasingly stable government, Mexico is re-emerging as a substantial force, and the future of our two countries is inextrocably intertwined.

We are all richer for having Mexico as a neighbor, and I welcome every opportunity to visit.

PS- Comment above: How did Bush "screw" Presidente Fox? President Bush appears to be the first US President in a long time who regards Mexico as something other than an amusing oddity.

Never been to Mexico, from what I've heard it's pretty but like every other country it depends where you go.

Many of my high school friends went to Cancun for Graduation Trip back in late 1999. Obviously they enjoyed themselves, the town was full of other Argentine groups and Americans, but it seems Cancun is just a really big tourist trap. And according to some of my female friends, there were lots of men around the clubs and the like accosting foreign chicks for 'favors'.

My mother has a couple of friends who have been to places like Guadalajara, Veracruz, and Monterrey, and they said those places are really beautiful, both the colonial downtowns and the countryside. Also, on one of my family trips to Europe I met a couple from Queretaro, and during our travels together through northern Spain and Southern France up to Lyon, we became good friends and they should us a few postards from there, and it also seemed very pretty.
