Well I've already posted my opinions on many of the teams and the winner, but I'll make some predictions for today.

Hmm tough choices,

Greece 2 (Charisteas, Giannakopoulos) - Portugal 1 (Pauleta)
Spain 2 (Baraja, Raúl) - Russia 0

We'll see how well I do! Starts in 7 minutes!

Cheers - Skytrain. Big grin

You mean non-decisive matches agianst your arch-enemies from the continent just to lose the next penalty shoot-out when they meet again during a tournament?

Great goal by Karagounis! Portugal isn't playing as a team yet. I think that was a very poor showing in the first half by them.

I've still got a shot for my prediction though - but not with the goal scorers! Big grin

Go Greece!

Cheers - Skytrain.

Currently watching the Portugal-Greece game (I hope that Greece takes this one - would be hilarious), while the TV stations aren't showing Le Mans (though I'm listening to Radio Le Mans).

Dumbass Colina gave 4 minutes overtime - in a game with way less pauses than the WC final 2002, where he gave 3 minutes.

Excellent job Greece, a well deserved win. Brilliant play by Greece, with stand-out performances from many, including Dellas, Charisteas, the goal scorers and the keeper.

I'm looking forward to the Spain v. Russia game in a few minutes.

I'm 1 for 1 with my predictions today Big grin - so I'm anxious to see how Spain fares.

Cheers - Skytrain.

PS. I see you got to play today Gomes - didn't do so well, eh? :P

Portugal's problem was that they have nothing up front. they play pretty, incisive football up to the penalty area but then they lack a top class striker to convert chances. Subsequently, for all portugal's pretty football most attacks ended with a cross into the box where the Greek defenders were very comfortable. In fact, when the Greeks attacked they looked far more menacing because they played more direct and had men up front who could hold the ball up. I reckon portugal have an uphill struggle to qualify now - they really need to win both remaining games and the Spain match will be really difficult.

I thought both Ronaldo and Deco made Portugal more dangerous but why was it that every time Ronaldo beat a defender and played a great cross theye was no portugal player attacking the ball? Too many great offensive situations were wasted while the Greeks had 3 good chances and converted 2 of them.

Rob, chill. I was quoting the prediction made earlier by Skytrain, hence why it was in bold. Then I said he got the players wrong in his prediction, but the score was correct.

Spain wins 1:0, nice game in my opinion. Next Wednesday is Portugal playing against Russia, the looser of this game can already say "bye bye" to the Euro 2004.

Pretty good job by the Spanish side, in my opinion. The Russians took some bad fouls and failed to really live up to their 'counter-striking' reputation. The Spanish starting line-up needs to get the job done a bit more next time. Morientes and Raul failed to create any quality opportunities, although I thought that Vicente played well. Great players in Valeron and Torres. Too bad Spain couldn't have added another!

Cheers - Skytrain.

Apart from the last 10 minutes of the first half, Spain (especially their defense) looked very stable.
If they can manage to take more advantage of their great offensive line (mainly: shooting earlier), they are one of the top-favorites together with France, Italy...and England (I feel it, truth hurts).  Smile

How long does this go on for ? Can't they just pick a team out of a hat and declare them the winner, save us having every frickin channel spewing out endless tedious bollocks about this defence and ooh that injury - NOBODY CARES !!! I am not switching the TV on again until this stupid soccer, the endless mind-numbing FUCKING BORING Tour De France and cretinous overhyped English-people-queuing-in-the-rain-and-eating-3-expensive-strawberries-while-teenagers-you-never-heard-of-grunt-like-overfed-swine-Windlebum are OVER !!!!! Yes well, but that's beside the point ! Do you not seriously think that sport has turned into this huge breast-beating quasi-religion, where it actually matters that David Beckham sent rude texts to some bimbo, and people shoot themselves full of steroids to get sneaker endorsements ? I'm sorry, I always thought the point of sport was to get outside, get some exercise and fresh air, have a laugh, and go home again. Oh well, just add it to my list of pet peeves (just call me Meldrew).

Hey man football is an art, true football fans dont give a shit about Beckham's private life, we care about watching quality, flowing, dramatic football.

And most people dont care about the fact that there are no seatmaps on NW flights

JGPH1A, I don't give a damn about sports either, but I appreciate the fun and energy they invoke in people. I watched the last 30 minutes or so of the Portugal - Greece game, and it was definitely fun to watch. I also enjoy being downtown and watching the fans honking and partying after their team wins. You know, there has to be something exciting in life, as it is not only about how much work or output you can produce. A fine balance must be reached, so even somebody like myself who doesn't care about sports, will on occasion go out and take in some enjoyment from the energy that results in a sporting event.

Oh, and I'll be watching some, but not all, of the games in the Euro 2004 with great interest!

Re: And most people dont care about the fact that there are no seatmaps on SA)">NW flights

I only care because I wanted to assign a seat and I couldn't ! Its not like I stay up nights weeping into my pillow about it.

Well as long as everyone has fun watching it, knock yourselves out. I agree with Captaingomes about some sports, eg. the Sydney Olympics were magic on TV, I thoroughly enjoyed them, there was an intense energy about the whole games. Soccer though, I just can't get excited about it. Maybe when SA host the 2012 World Cup, but even then I won't hold my breath.

Save your anti-football rants for somewhere else, if you don't like it, don't watch it, simple as that. Football is one thing which is great about Europe, it's the only truly global sport. You don't like "soccer", that's too bad then, you're certainly in the wrong place because you're a minority. Let the rest of us (the majority) enjoy this fine spectacle in Europe.

I think that what is quite strange about the England France game is that usually the English and the French have a great rivalry which boils down to centuries-old hatred. However, I think I get the impression that whilst obviously most English people want England to win Euro 2004, if England get knocked out then I think many English will support the French because of the Premiership-based players (especially the Arsenal contingent). Now an Englishman cheering for France doesn't happen too often!

Henry, Pires and Viera (Arsenal), Gallas, Makelele and Desailly (Cheslea), Saha and Silvestre (Man Utd). Who else?
