Formula One Racers Disqualified

Mon Jun 14, 2004 6:24 pm

Drivers in the Formula One race in Montreal were disqualified after the race on Sunday. http://f1.racing-live.com/en/headlines/news/detail/040614005908.shtml
My question is this. Why did they (the people running Formula One) wait until after the race? All the racing cars are quarantined after the second day of qualifying up to the time to warm up the cars for the race on Sunday. Why don't the stewards do an inspection during Saturday night and tell the teams of the violations then? It is possible the teams (four cars in all) did not know there was a problem!?!?!?

Quite simply: because the Stewards are not a consulting group to the teams as to how to interpret the regulations, they are instead some sort of "police"...to participate in a race with a car that is irregular is forbidden, to have one at the racetrack, quite obviously not!

The problem here seems to be, that we are talking about technical changes that are specific for the Canadian racetrack (that is, they couldn't check them through against the regulations) which is murderous to the brakes, subsequently these 2 teams did some changes, in the case of Williams it helped them to be faster that they are ususally these days.

Why? The usual reactions are:

Ralf: Starts to bawl right away and feels mistreated by the whole world.

Monty: Starts to scream blue murder that Schu (Michael, that is) changed the brakes on Monty's car overnight and told the stewards...and feels mistreated by the whole world!

These 2 guys are way too dumb to ever be champion!!!

However, there is an argument for the cars being inspected before the race and, if in breach of regulations, disqualified before the race starts. The biggest problem with the current system is that the crowd and TV audience watches a race, the podium presentations and the post-race TV interviews, then later, or even the next day, finds it's all wrong.

In addition, a driver replacing a disqualified one is denied the pleasure of being on the podium (in this specific instance).

Another thing I was thinking about is there is a racing car (that will eventually be disqualified mechanically after the race) out on the race course that crashes and takes out another car, that other car might be a contender and have a possible top spot on the podium in his immediate future, or at least a lot of points. Now that second driver would have every right to be upset, and double that emotion when he finds out the other guy was driving around the course in a car that was going to be disqualified!  Pissed
