Fanta In USA Vs Fanta In Europe

Thu Jun 17, 2004 10:24 am

Has anyone here tried Fanta in Europe and Fanta in the USA? I have, and I have noted considerable differences. The ones in Europe are a ton better, the color is lighter, and it tastes incredible! Whenever I go to my grandparents island in Croatia I always have to have it! When it came to America, I was ecstatic! I tried it, and I was disappointed. I found out the difference: in the USA we put in high fructose corn syrup, and in Europe I think they put in real sugar. This crap they put in it in the USA makes it taste pretty bad. I know they are found in about everything soda drink here in America, but the differences in taste of Fanta in USA/Europe are different! Which do you think is better: USA Fanta or European Fanta??

I haven't tried Fanta in the US, but I have tried the Chilean, Brazilian and European versions.
I must say that the European Fanta is delicious, tastes very natural, as it has a 12% of orange juice. Then, the Brazilian one, If i'm not mistaken, has a 6% of orange juice. I think the chilean one has no orange juice at all, as the American version I suppose. Although I like the chilean "yeah-sure-it-has-some-orange-juice-in-it" version, I like much more the european "natural" Fanta version.

Fanta was invented in Europe, actually in Nazi Germany during WW2.
Due to the war Coca Cola Germany couldn´t import the base sirup for Coca Cola and had to think about an alternative.
I think orange juice was still available due to the Nazi´s connections with Franco Spain (and Germany controlled France up to the Spanish border), so they developed a softdrink based on oranges.
The stuff proved to be popular and was continued after the war was over.

I really hate the commercials (especially the ones in movies), and it makes me want to drink that pop much less, never tried it either.

I have actually just started drinking Fanta. I gave up Mtn Dew and needed something else. The grape Fanta is tasty ice cold.

Here in the US we have grape, orange, pineapple and strawberry. I would like to try the Europe version if is that much better.

Here in Thailand they have loads of Fanta flavours. from memory they have;

Orange
Lemon
Strawberry
Cream Soda
Grape
Green flavour (what the hell that's supposed to be God knows)
Sala (a Thai fruit punch flavour)
Green Tea (the worst Fanta ever)

flavoured Fantas plus some others. The best Fantas are Orange and Sala flavour. In the UK I think you only get Orange and Lime Fanta

I remember reading somewhere that Fanta is different in each and every country. That includes the basic Fanta Orange. The company adapts the drink to the different markets, and even has an entire research lab which does nothing but come up with new variations of Fanta, for different markets. They do research to find out what kind of taste the people of a certain country prefer, and adapt the product accordingly. So there are literally hundreds of different sorts of Fanta worldwide.

Fanta was indeed invented in Germany during WW II because the Coca Cola Company lacked basic materials to produce Coke, but the original Fanta was made from old apples and pears as well as whey. The Fanta with orange flavor was launched a few years later after the war.

Fanta tastes indeed different in every country, my favorite is the Fanta orange from Spain because it has a very fruity taste. My all time favorite is Fanta strawberry, I drunk it in Dubai a few month ago, too bad that they don't sell it here in Germany.

In Germany we have the following Fanta flavors:

Fanta Classic
  • Orange

  • Berry Blue

  • Exotic (a mix of different tropical fruits)

  • Tangerine

  • Mango (not available everywhere)

  • Fanta Citrell (no so sweet)
  • Blood Orange

  • Lemon

  • Blood Orange with Passion Fruit

I have tried Fanta in Ecuador, Colombia, USA, Argentina, France and Chile. Can't say I didn't note any differences, except the one in France that tasted a bit different. You should try one in Colombia, they have a tangerine (mandarina) flavored Fanta that tastes real good. Oh yeah... Tangerine Fanta is Fantastic.

While I like regular Coke better in the USA than in Europe, I think what they sell as Fanta over there is awful in comparison to the average european Fanta Orange because it´s way too sweet and the color is just terrible.

In Mexico we used to have orange, grape and strawberry Fanta.......while in the US it was very difficult to find, the for years the only Fanta flavor in Mexico was orange, now we have all the flavors back and the marketing has changed to being targeted for kids to a more mature consumer, Donald Duck was the "spokesperson" for orange Fanta in Mexico

One of the best orange sodas out there. I remember my first one. 1969, NYC hot dog vendor outside the NY Auto Show. The smell of a hot pretzel and that ice cold orange soda... hmmmmmmmm...

The grape is O.K., I prefer Welch's Grape to the Fanta.

well ive tried it in the UK,the US,and Moscow. Unfortenetly there was about a 1 year delay between the 3 so its hard to compare. One thing thats the same is the way its carbonated. When drinking it,it feels like theres some crushed ice in it.

Anders, agreed. The only thing that's worse is root beer.

Patrick, WHERE did you see Fanta Mango lately?!
    I need to know!!!
My friends and I have come up with the (not so serious) theory that it was too good for the market and thus had to be taken off.
Don't they still sell the regular "Zitrone" also?
I don't know. After Fanta Mango got canned (no pun intended), I have become a Diet Coke (Cola Light) guy.

And Fanta Berry Blue...WTF! Not only does that stuff look vile and fake, it also tastes just like that.

Patrick, WHERE did you see Fanta Mango lately?!

A gas station in Essen is selling this stuff in 0,33l cans, I stop there sometimes when I drive to DUS airport just to buy one.

Don't they still sell the regular "Zitrone" also?

"Zitrone" got replaced with "Fresh Lemon" a few years ago, the problem is that Fresh Lemon is tasting like $hit, the old Zitrone flavor was much better.

And Fanta Berry Blue...WTF! Not only does that stuff look vile and fake, it also tastes just like that.

I agree, Berry Blue is a joke, it tastes disgusting and it makes your tongue blue.

    What gas station is it?!

It is the Esso station on the Ruhrallee, a few hundred meters away from the "Autobahnauffahrt" Essen-Bergerhausen.

You should hurry up, I found the following press release on the German Coca-Cola homepage:

    Patrick

Edit: I am flying to Lisbon tomorrow, they sell Fanta pineapple in Portugal, I can't wait to drink it again  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

To add to some posts, Fanta has been created by the German division of Coca Cola, because they couldn't get the Coke extract because of the embargo.
    That's a nickname for Fantastich.
By this way, Coca Cola has been able to keep his German branch during the Nazis times, make business and profit during the war and despite embargo.

There isn't a single European version. Each country (just about) has its own with a different formula.

In the Netherlands it's little more than carbonated water with sugar and artificial colourings added, in Austria it's excellent.

I was in Zimbabwe a couple of years ago and they had non-carbonated Fanta orange, it wasn't in a bottle or a can, but a carton like milk.
