England Vs Croatia

Mon Jun 21, 2004 11:21 pm

Thoughts, analysis and predictions please.

England "only" need a draw, but don't be fooled, Spain only needed a draw against Portugal also, but they ended up being eliminated. England have to improve their game or it could end in tears, we need to pass the ball better and keep posession when things heat up. We were in the same position in Euro 2000 and ended up going out against Romania.

The Croatians are mentality strong and have a lot of technical ability, as they showed against France, they are definitely no pushovers and i can see England getting knocked out if they're not careful. However tricky this game is, England should get through, if they don't, well that's too bad and we'll have no one to blame but ourselves. If England are to win it (and i'm not convinced yet) we have to beat the likes of Croatia and maybe even France again.

It should be a good game of football, Croatia have to win and they'll push England all the way, i just hope the England players fulfill their potential.

Kick off 7:45 GMT. 8:45 CET.

In Arsene we trust!!

As I pointed out earlier, it would be a cruel and unusual punishment for you guys to get kicked out by anybody else but Germany, you are used to that historically and you wouldn't have a problem there  Big grin. Therefore I wish you the best to move on to the quarterfinals!

The problem with Spain last night was that they approached the game in the wrong way. Going out a playing for a draw is not in the English mentality, it's win or bust with us unlike sides from the continent (I know it's mostly lose before you German's start  Laugh out loud), and the good news it that we can't go out on penalties yet . England win 1-0 in a nervous affair with Owen getting on the score sheet finally.

Oh yeah? There are sides from the continent, that are able to play for a draw and do succeed? Well, humour me then...name a few...or at least one! (Don't even try to come up with Germany...everybody knows that's hogwash!)

Spain as shown last night, and probably the most negative despite having high skill players that can win games, Italy.

Bah, that Rooney player is overrated!

I think England played well in the first half, the only problem was the lack of conviction in attack (Only Rooney had a shot from outside the box besides Gerrards deflected shot, and he scored), too many silly balls that didn't come off. England had most of the possession and Croatia were poor, didn't deserve their goal either.

Congratulations to Switzerland for equalizing against France, lets hope they can get a winner (or four Big grin) in the second half.

Game on, the jobs only half done.

Rooney is a bastard, but a talented bastard. Duel of the worst goalkeepers in the tournament tonight, I guess. Croatia don't look dangerous enough to score even one more goal, even though the English basically refused to defend they failed to become dangerous in front of the goal. Why the hell is Terry playing (or rather messing around) again instead of King?

I feel a bit insulted by the French. They play as if this was not the Euro 2004 but the sunshine-beach tournament in Lloret de Mar. Still, they will go through as well (and might even win the whole thing...)

To all the impartial observers from other countries - what did you think of England? Do they look like a team that can go all the way? Or are the defensive problems too much?

England can and probably will go all the way. I think this might well be your tournament  Smile With a player like Rooney, chances of reaching minimum the semi-finals are very, very big.

Not a bad game at all. Perhaps the referee had something to do with it?

We still don't look too good at the back though. We've got to get much tighter. I wonder if they talk to each other because at times they were all over the place. It's okay if you are scoring lots of goals but we might be in trouble if we don't.

Everton might not be happy about losing Rooney but the silly money they will get for him will go a long way. Could even buy them a new stadium.

Well, if you defend like this against Portugal, you're doomed. But your players have the ability to play better, and I'm sure that we'll see a better performance of the English defense on thursday. James could be a problem.

Portugal - England should be interesting, but if Rooney plays like today, Portugal's defense (which surely isn't the best in the tournament) will be in big trouble.

Still, I predict England to go through to the semi-finals.

Well in that case I am hoping the Germans beat the Czechs  Smile

As an aside - there was an interesting article in today's Evening Standard regarding the failure of Spain. The article said that Spanish failure with fantastic players is just as inevitable as German sucess with poor players. So on that basis I would not be surprised to see Germany beat the Czechs - Germany always seems to be able to do just enough to qualify and I wouldn't bet against them - and if you can get somebody to score goals then they have a great chance.

One thing I was thinking is that Owen is a great striker who has played pretty average this tournament. If he starts scoring and Rooney continues, we can cause big problems to the better teams. I still don't fancy us if we play the French again though - Zidane is just class and player for player the French are better than England IMHO. But none of the other teams have scared me too much.

It was a very attractive game. If it wasn't England who won the game I would say the winning team has an extraordinary assault (especially shrek) and a good chance to win the tournament. But it was England therefore I have to consider some special 38 years  Wink/being sarcastic. And my favorite the - Czechs - are still unbeaten.

I hate to admit this but England looked pretty good tonight.
However, I believe Portugal will be a much bigger obstacle for them to overcome.
Interesting to note how many times John Motson referred to the 5-1 win over Germany though.

Well congrats...and good morning! (Did I say this???...Good Lord  Big grin)

Ok, nice game, also thanx to the Croatians, who tried to play along instead of trying to destroying the game, much better than the France game.

Dear Engelaender  Big grin!

Your strikers are great, your midfield seems to be a bit, shall we say moody, depending on the moon phase or whatever, but overall still quite well, your defense is ...err...moody as well, playing a team with great strikers could be a real problem for you. Your keeper...shoot him! That's a real laugh, sorry to tell you, but in Germany this guy wouldn't even play in the 1.Bundesliga ...absolutely pathetic!!
You'll be sorry ...this guy could cost you the title!!

And while we're at it..dear Schwyzer: That goes for Joerg Stiel as well! Unbelievable....

Great result for England - we looked on top of it throughout, and as Ericsson said, if we play like we did in the first 45 mins, we'll be pretty hard to beat by anybody.

On a side note, I was saddened to learn that an England fan was stabbed to death last night, early reports suggested it had been a Croatian fan but this isn't being reported in the latest news.... I guess we'll find out more in due course.

Starting at the commentators, going right the way through the team. I think the only one of them that isnt arrogant is Wayne Rooney, but he's still a thug  Big grin
Anyway, is John Terry's injury serious?

Ronney overated? LMFAO!! You need to watch some football my friend. Shrek is the hottest property in European football. H'e just trebled his wages and transfer fee within a week.

Overall a much better performance from England, just what we needed, better passing, kept possesion better and didn't panic when conceding the goal. The midfield was on fire, up front it was Rooney again producing the goods, Owen had a hand in 3 of the goals, Captain Becks was OK but could do better. The defence was good again, but looed a bit suspect on set pieces. Portugal won't be easy, but if England produce another performance like this while tightening up at the back, we could progress further.

You can't gompare Gazza with Rooney as Rooney is a striker and Gazza a midfielder. Gazza was more technically gifted but Rooney has raw agression and is unlike other strikers. He is more of a charging Rhino
