HELP: What Kind Of Lifestyle Can I Afford?

Fri Jun 25, 2004 10:54 pm

dear all,

soon, i will move to the US on a scholarship. i will be paid $2800 a month and i will be living in columbus, ohio. this is taxfree and healthcare is included.

i have no idea how much this is in terms of purchasing power / housing etc. i know that there are huge differences in the US. regarding housing, my impression is that columbus is rather on the cheap side of things.

dear fellow a.netters: can you help me to get a perspective?

thanks in advance

r.

$2800 tax free??? That is a little more than what I make before taxes. Assuming that the cost of living in Columbus, OH isn't sky high, and I doubt it is... you should be very comfortable. Assuming you are stuck with a ton of credit card debt or student loans, you should have a considerable amount of disposible income.

indeed.

at $2800 per month TAX FREE, in COLUMBUS, you will be able to afford yourself a rather comfortable lifestyle.

assuming of course your books are all going to be paid for as well. the price of college books is evil

Columbus is relatively cheap. A very nice 1 bedroom apartment in the suburbs would be $400-$600 in all the but the most ritzy of neighborhoods.

As far as housing, depends where in Columbus you'll be staying. I live on the northeast side of the city, and a nice 3 bedroom house should be under $180,000.

Where are you going to school?

Most people in Columbus make about that and have to pay taxes and insurance. Enjoy your stay and get your happy butt up to Cedar Point before you leave!

hey folks,

this really sounds reassuring. a friend of mine went to boston two years ago on a comparable scholarship. and this year was not too funny incomewise.

@ portcolumbus: i gonna be at OSU as a post-doc.

cheers, r.
