Credit card always.

Except when I go to Germany where it's very difficult to find a shop accepting credit cards. Grrrrrr ... I always forget and always have to chase a cash dispenser.  Pissed

I try to avoid using my credit cards. I have too many of them and too much debt on them as it is.

I generally carry 20-40 bucks cash on me to pick up lunch and stuff. Everything else that I need to buy, and pay cash for, I use my bankcard/ATM debit card for most other purchases.

credit card as much as possible.

only because i am able to pay them off each month, otherwise carrying debt would annoy me.

also only because of all the AAdvantage miles  Big thumbs up

more and more in the city though i have found myself at a restaurant that says on the menu "we are pleased to accept cash only" really? oh, i'm so happy you are, dick. i'm not bitter or anything, but finding a cash machine is annoying.

Debit/check card.

Avoid posting "Me Too" messages. These are messages that are posted by people who agree to a point being discussed and post a one liner, "me too!", "Good post Jim!", "I disagree" or similar message. I prefer to pay with my Visa card because I get one Lufthansa mile for every Euro I spend, sometimes I also use my debit card. Beside these cards I also have a little bit cash in my wallet, at the moment three different currencies:

- 27 Euro
- 20 Pound Sterling (for the MAN Meeting next weekend)
- 130 Singapore Dollar (for an upcoming trip to SIN next Tuesday)

I almost never have cash - I use Visa/Carte Bleu for everything (just LOVE EFTPOS !). The only shops in France that don't seem to accept CB are bakeries for some reason, which is very annoying ! Oh, and change required for the launderette.

I guess I've grown up with credit cards and ATM's - I often wonder how people managed before ATM's were invented ! Imagine having to actually go into the bank and queue to withdraw money ! What a mission.

Always used credit/debit card unless I go for fast food or something. I only carry about 10$ with me at the most. Guess I wouldn't net a pickpocket much would I.

I use both cash and Visa. I use Visa for almost everything, with the exception of small pizzerias/shops that do not take cards. I always use cash when I am going out to a bar/night club as well, do not want to be ripped off while I am drunk as hell. Big grin

I haven't touched cash in months. My only gripe is that lots of places don't take credit cards for small orders (like buying lunch).

Some banks have been offering their checking/atm debit cards with a FF mile connection. With my bank, Key, I can get an MasterCard ATM/Debit card that earns me OnePass miles. I believe you earn 1 mile for each dollar spent, though I am not 100% on that. Only a $25/yr annual fee... which is a bit cheaper than the Chase OnePass Visa/MC.

I prefer cash, but that's just me. Most of my purchases are pretty small (read: under $100), so I'll just pay cash. However, those small times when I am buying more than $100 of something, plus everytime I use the internet to shop, I use my Visa.

I'll usually use my Checkcard or my Credit Card and if I use my credit Card, I pay it off each month. I work downtown, so I never really have the need to carry cash.  Smile

Though I'm no expert on the matter, I understand that the protections afforded to a user of a check/debit card under US law are different than those afforded to a credit card user related to fraudulent activity. I believe that the credit card offers a holder a greater level of protection than a debit card.

Something that debit card users might want to keep in mind.

I don't really like carrying cash (except to the horsetrack or casino, of course), so I usually use a credit card.

I always carry a little cash with me, just in case... Bigger purchases (car payment, insurance, etc) go on my AWA FlightFund Visa. Daily purchases... coffee, gas, lunch etc go on my AWA Visa Check Card from Bank of America...

I use ATM sometimes but mainly credit card. I know Visa is the largest credit card company on earth. What about in the US? Is it the most common one?

Cash= bars/clubs
Credit= everything else

Mainly because:

A) I pay the balances off every month so interest is not an issue (except school related charges which I have to wait for reimbursements).

B) Incentives... just cashed in 50,000 miles for two roundtrip tickets (LAS) for my brother and his girlfriend. Usually bring in about 80,000 miles/year but Chase caps it at 60,000 I think. I give the miles to my brother since he doesn't have my non-rev benefits.

Direct Debit from my bank account for bills.

Credit card for online purchases.

Cash and EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer @ Point of Sale) from my bank account usually.

I'm paying off the credit card - I got caught in the trap they set - "We've approved an increase in your limit, sign here!" - ugh! Each time I went shopping  Smile Bad bad Trent.

Arsenal@LHR - re no credit cards for me EVER.

That might give you problems with travelling abroad, hotels nowadays require a credit card number to guarantee a reservation, car hire companies don't touch cash any more, things like that. Also, you'll have trouble booking tickets on non-UK based carriers with just a UK debit card. I don't think you can use debit cards in self-service check-in machines either (not that that's a huge deal, but anyway).

Why don't you want a credit card ? They're great, just as good as a debit card as long as you pay in full every month, and accepted all over the world.

Cash for anything under $30.00 over that then credit card, I have 2 credit cards, one ANZ Qantas Visa earning points directly into Qantas the other has to be transferred manually, both have a monthly points cap so need both cards to maximise my points earning bonuses.

But as along as you're debit card has a Visa/Delta sign on it you can pretty much use it anywhere in the world. Mine has and i can use my Barclays Debit card anywhere where there is a Visa/Delta sign.

Why don't you want a credit card ? They're great, just as good as a debit card as long as you pay in full every month, and accepted all over the world.

I like to use my OWN money, the money you use with a Credit card is not your money, it's essentially a short term loan which you pay back in installments. Not my cup of tea, a debit card works fine for me currently, the money that i spend with it is mine, and not a credit company's which i have to pay back.

I'm currently using a MBNA BMI credit card that gives 1.5miles per pound spent, plus 20k free miles upon subscription = 2 free flights almost instantly! Virtually every penny i spend goes onto this card - which is paid off monthly.

You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!
