Bush Did Not Lie About Iraq, Say Democrats

Tue Jul 13, 2004 8:11 am

http://online.wsj.com/article/0,,SB108958476653860798,00.html?mod=opinion%5Fmain%5Freview%5Fand%5Foutlooks

""The Committee did not find any evidence that Administration officials attempted to coerce, influence or pressure analysts to change their judgments related to Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities."

So reads Conclusion 83 of the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on prewar intelligence on Iraq.
"

"A few apologies would seem to be in order. Allegations of lying or misleading the nation to war are about the most serious charge that can be leveled against a President. But according to this unanimous study, signed by Jay Rockefeller and seven other Democrats, those frequent charges from prominent Democrats and the media are without merit."

What the hell does it take for you? a prominent liberal democrat signs off on a statement that absolves the President of the charges levied by the more radical of the left fringe and you are prepared to believe that the democrats are lying!!

I guess your signature line was not ironic in your case......Get a life and find something else to harp on for a while.

Nice to see how you turn "The [bi-partisan] Committee" into "Democrats".

You seem to have forgotten one important detail: the results of the investigation to see whether the White House has lied or not will not be made public until after the next elections.

Don't shout victory too early...

Saying "Bush did not lie say Republicans" wouldn't be much of a headline, nor would it grab your attention, no?

You're right, but that's misleading (much like what Bush said about the war)

I read the damn thing. It's not going to change my view about Iraq.

Iraq DID have a bastard as a dictator, and he did slaughter many of his own people and did have chemical shells. Now there are only a truckfull of chemical shells that are 10 years old and you guys are saying 1,000 US Troops dead is well worth a Bum in a hole and 25 shells that supposedly could've been launched here in a heartbeat.

I think not. Nice try though.

No one is saying that. All that was said is that Bush and this administration did not lie.

Well, if they didn't, then why was Iraq a threat if they had a few dozen decade old chem bombs with absolutely NO WAY of them even hitting Greenland Let alone the US?

Usual extreme left crap from the usual suspects here...

They'll be content with nothing but the murder of president Bush and his entire cabinet and the establishment of a Socialist Democratic People's Republic where the USA is now...

No, the president and the cabinet never lied. They presented what information they had truthfully.
If that information was flawed (as it may have been) that was not their fault but the result of the serious downgrading of US intelligence gathering and analysis capabilities during the Clintonian era.

That's a question for the CIA and every other respectable intelligence agency on this mortal coil. The administration just spoke on the information they got from said agencies; they never fabricated one iota of information. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I can tell you they didn't spend too much time, they rushed in!!!

They took too little time, they saw a few clues here and there (most importantly we obviously needed to rely on British intelligence for that one).

Fact is, we rushed in and didn't do our classwork (let alone homework) and it bit who in the ass? The administration? No, we'll see in November how votes turn out, but instead it bit our International relations and OUR TROOPS! AS WELL AS CIVILLIANS!

I didn't know the Bi-Partisan Committee was now only made up of Democrats!

We were mislead in going to war, as we were mislead when we saw the subject title.

Lets not forget that one of the Most prominent Lefties in the US, AL GORE, said in the 2000 campaign that He thought that saddam Hussein was a treath that needed to be dealt with and removed from power at any cost, now he is bashing Bush for a War he campaigned for in 2000. The intelegence of WMDs went way back into the Clinton ERA, or did all you lefties forget DESERT FOX?

Luisca, if that were a fact, then it would be even worse - Clinton's presidency is a few years away by now, and intelligence gathered during that time could hardly be called "up to date"...

MaverickM11, maybe you should try to not post threads like this one (and all the others) for a few days - it really does give the impression that you're reaching for every available straw at the moment...

As for the topic of this thread - true, it wouldn't have gotten as much attention if you'd've written "Bush Did Not Lie About Iraq, Say Republicans", but how about something like "Bush Did Not Lie About Iraq, Democrats on Committee Agree"? That would have been just a bit less misleading...

You all keep bitching about the "misleading" nature of the title, yet it is still true. 8 Democrats on the Select Intelligence committee agreed to the completely unanimous report that the Bush administration did not coerce anyone into making any analysis that was not supported (by what seems to have been bad performance).

Oh wait, you have no way to refute that so you go to Bush bashing and saying the thread starter was deliberately misleading you. Give us all a break.

-Nick

PS: MaverickM11, while I still don't know what I think about Bush, you can be rest assured that the media will never report this(at least high profilingly).

Nightline's Ted Koppel contacted 42 Democrat Senators to ask them if they would have changed their vote based on the current hindsight. Of those 42, only three said yes. Those saying they would still have voted for war include Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Chuck Schumer and Tom Daschle.

Somehow, saying "three said yes" and then listing four people doesn't ring true... although, forgive me for not being up to speed on every single Democrat or Republican: is one (or more) of those listed a Republican?

"We were mislead in going to war, as we were mislead when we saw the subject title."

No you weren't. Democrats and Republicans said Bush didn't lie, so saying "Democrats say Bush didn't lie" is not misleading anyone. It's 100% true.

"MaverickM11, maybe you should try to not post threads like this one (and all the others) for a few days - it really does give the impression that you're reaching for every available straw at the moment..."

Grasping at straws like reports that 100% exonerate the Bush administration from lying or coercing anyone other than Saddam...yeah, straws  Insane

You're counting different things. Only three said they would have changed their vote to 'against the war'; separately, of the 39 that would not have changed their opinion, Hillary Clinton et al were among them.

Well, tomorrow makes for interesting reading in the UK with the publication of the Butler report which was charged with investigating whether the use of intelligence in the UK going to war was flawed or not.The strong rumour is that the government won't come out smelling of roses.
