Cell Phone Providers, Which Is Best?

Wed Jul 14, 2004 11:38 am

Just wanted to ask everyone what they thought who was a better cell phone provider. I currently have Qwest, and thinking of switching. Currently thinking of Sprint or AT&T, I need one with nation wide coverage with no roaming (Most providers cover all major cities, which one has better rural coverage?), no charge phone to phone (I will be purchasing two phones). Please share your opinions.

Thanks.

I've heard that T-Mobile is the best, although they are a bit on the expensive side. I have Sprint myself, and have had no complaints.

BTW, what the hell do you need two phones for?

I have been with Verizon Wirless since September 2001 and have been 99% satisfied since. When I have had any problems, I have encountered friendly and efficient agents over the phone. Coverage is not at all lacking.

I am sure the cell phone companies love this free advertising!

I have had AT&T for about 3 years now. Reception is great and it is cheap...no complaints at all about the service. Customer service on the other hand is absolutely horrid.

Actually, T-Mobile tends to be among the least expensive. Or, at least they have the least expensive plans. However, their coverage is a bit more erratic, especially in the rural areas.

Check coverage maps to see who has the best coverage for the areas you expect to be.

I'm very happy with Verizon Wireless. Last year I was atop Haleakala in Maui and got a shred of reception. That made me happy.

As for you, I think it depends on your area. Some providers are much better in certain regions than others. I think you should ask around and pick quality over price. There's no point in having a lot of minutes if you can't use them.

The second phone is for the wife & kids. I don't think Cingular is an option here, I tried entering my location on there web site, didn't come up with any local coverage.

I've got Verizon Wireless, reception is great, couldn't be happier. My mom used to have Cingular and she hated it, you could never get reception (notice that Cingular dosen't say a damn thing about the quality of their service in their commercials). I've heard bad things about AT&T as well. I guess it all depends on what part of the country you're in.

Verizon Wireless has the best coverage Nationwide. Your profile says you're in SLC, and having been through there several times my phone had full signal at all times. The only time you run in to trouble is in way southern Utah when you go through some valleys in between cliffs. If you aren't going to Arizona then you're set. T-Mobile has terrible service compared to Verizon. While driving through Phoenix which is 95% flat, my friends constantly weaves in and out of service. I would recommend you go for Verizon. It may cost a little more, but its the best.

I have AT&T based in Portland. I just went to Salt Lake. I was on four different cell networks between here and there but I was still on the same rate plan as if I were at home. It was a little scary at first seeing some other company's name on my phone screen but they had good reception in the different cities and towns. As long as I had a signal, all the services were as though I was in Portland.

AVOID SPRINT!

I have had them since may 2003 and I have had over 200 dropped calls. My mom and dad have had Verizon since August of 2001 and they have NEVER had a dropped call.

I've had Sprint for 3 years and have never had any dropped calls. The service is always good, reception is always good, and I've got a good plan that works for me. The only problems I've run into is when I've had to call Customer Service. I get people that are indifferent and usually seem unwilling to help. I usually just take my problems to my local Sprint Store and deal with the manager there.

The big thing I like about them is that everywhere I go, there they are and the coverage is still just as good as at home.

I currently have Verizon and my family has had them since they bought out AirTouch. They have the best service area and reasonable rates on the plans. Also they have the best customer service I have ever had.

I also wanted to add, that I have never had a dropped call with my Verizon service, although I have had 2 phones die on me. The nice thing is, if you're phone breaks Verizon replaces it for free. Of course that's baring you don't beat the crap out of it and expect a free new one. I'm on my 3rd v60, both the other two decided to randomly stop ringing.

It is definitely not for everyone, but I love my Nextel. Around here the service is very good, and I use the Direct Connect more than I ever would have thought, especially at work. Some plans come with unlimited DC minutes, otherwise unlimited can be purchased for an additional $10/mo. The biggest problem with the Nextels is that they are a bit expensive.

I pay $60/mo for nationwide service with unlimited Direct Connect. I have 400 minutes but free unlimited incoming calls. I never come close to using my full 400. Actually I rarely break 200/mo.

I have heard very good things about Verizon. I probably would have gone with them, except they do not have home service in Kalamazoo so they were really unable to be an option unfortunately. My pager is through Verizon, and that has great service though  Smile

I can second the thoughts on avoiding Sprint. Back when I lived in Detroit, we had some very bad experiences with their wireless service.

I'm planning a trip to SFO, DC and NYC during December. If I bring my own "triband phone" and the phone is not network locked, what should I do once I get to the States?

I mainly want to stay in touch with friends and family via text messaging (international). Maybe make the odd call or 2. Naturally I have to get a US sim card. I prefer prepaid services.

What options do I have with regard to networks, coverage, products and overall value for money? Can I get a "prepaid sim card" for instance at JFK, ATL, SFO, etc? Are there cell phone stores in the airports?

Thanks for your help.

When I was in NYC, I found that T-mobile was the stronger signal. I found that AT&T was a close second, but the total oppsite down in Florida there. AT&T comes out on top, for GSM cell service, I have no Idea about CDMA.

SA7700, A friend of mine just came over from England a few days ago, and with his tri-band phone he was able to text people back in the UK without a problem. I don't think there is anything you need to do in order to do sms text messaging as it is rather standard around the world. However I would call up your wireless company and ask them, they may be partners with some American company. Good Luck.

I've had both Cingular and AT&T and I was very pleased with both. I have ATT now with no roaming and nationwide calling and, except for a few spots around Michigan minus a signal, I'm pleased.

SA7700, both Cingular and T-Mobile have roaming agreements with MTN SAf and Vodacom SAf, and both are full feature GSM1900 systems, including fax, data and sms.
If you wish to check the services and rates, visit www.gsm.com/roaming which also provides the appropriate links.

SA7700, Vodacom in South Africa is part of the Vodafone group, and Verizon Wireless in the States is 45% owned by Vodafone. Effectively, a controlling stake. I would imagine that the two subsidiaries will have a partnership agreement between South Africa and the US.

Banco just because Vodafone is a (major) quotaholder of Verizon does not mean they play the same game.

Verizon is the largest US operator, and its network is CDMA, not GSM.
Until dual or triple standard phones are available, there is no "network roaming" possible.

No, you're quite right, it doesn't. I just thought that on the basis that the two companies were linked it might be worth exploring to see if there was a tie-up, that's all.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the replies. There's no problem roaming with either MTN or Vodacom, but we experience that it's much more expensive, time and again, than getting a sim card for the country where you are travelling.

My parents and sister roamed with their Vodacom phones in the UK and throughout Europe. The bill was staggering! Myself on the other hand, rented a Vodafone sim card on arrival in PER. Without a doubt my bill was much cheaper.

Correct of course.
Roaming charges is the product of both operators charging you for every single call, at international call rates, your home op at the rate stated in your contract, the "host" op at the maximum int'l rate in their price list.
The highest "combined" roaming charges I know of are exceeding 8$/minute with a minimum charge of 30 seconds....that's gold talk.

If you stay for a period of time and expect to place some calls, buying a local SIM card is more than sensible.
