What To Do In Ottawa?

Thu Jul 22, 2004 3:12 am

I am getting a case of cabin fever and feel the need to make a daytrip/weekend trip out of town.

I've partially decided that a trip up to Ottawa is in order. It is only a 3 hour drive from my home and it is the most interesting city within that radius... who really wants to go to Buffalo or Albany afterall??

For those of you that live there or have been, what sights are there, what festivals might be going on, what sort of nightlife there is, and anything else that you can possibly think of.

I would plan on making this trip on a Saturday, getting into town midday and heading back down during the evening. Most likely at the begging of August.

Any advice or links to good info would be greatly appreciated.

Visit the Canada Aviation Museum; worked there for 5 years on and off. Most impressive collection of airplanes in Canada. About 130 machines.

You can go on a Stearman ride as well.

Park in the market district and walk west to the Rideau Canal. If you've got an entire two hours to spare, you can watch a full transit of the flight locks -- all eight of them. Or you could just stand on the Confederation Bridge and marvel at the civil engineering feat that is the Ottawa flight.

Edit: fix name of bridge

I was just in Ottawa yesterday. Don't miss the great nightly multi-media presentation at the Parliament Buildings.

They project images on the face of the Centre Block and Peace Tower. You can also take in a guided tour of the Parliament Buildings for free.

Other attractions are the Science and Technology museum, the Canadian War Museum, a free currency museum and the National Art Gallery.

Byward Market is a nice area close to the Parliament Buildings that has several restaurants and open markets.

The shops and restaurants of Elgin street are also always entertaining.

There are quite a few scenic areas to tour around Ottawa as well including the Parliament Building area and the Rideau Canal.
