NN Trip Advice: Tortola & St. Croix

Thu Jul 22, 2004 11:39 am

Just wondering if any of you have been to the British Virgin Islands, namely Tortola, and to St. Croix... I'm also going to St. John but am making arrangements to stay at the Westin...

- diving recommendations?

- hotel recommendations?

thanks in advance..

I just got back from a Caribbean cruise last week - for a Seattleite used to murky 55-degree water, Trunk Bay beach on St. John is just unbelievable. For snorkelers and divers, it has a shallow coral reef around two islands about a hundred feet offshore. National Geographic rated it the second-best beach in the world.

One drawback is that Trunk Bay gets crowded in the mornings when the cruise passengers shuttle over from St. Thomas. All the beaches on St. John are public and looked spectacular, so take your pick.

We didn't get around to Tortola or St. Croix (which is USVI if I recall correctly), but family have told me that Tortola is very nice, quite relaxed and low-key.

Have a great trip - we did!

Tortola is beautiful, really unspoilt - I stayed at West End, at a tiny place called the Jolly Roger Inn - it was lovely. If you walk round the headland, there's a beautiful empty beach the other side, with great snorkelling. If you can, get over to Jost Van Dyke, and walk round to the Sandcastle Hotel (if its still there) - at White Bay, I think it was - they have hammocks slung between the palm trees, and do an amazing drink called a Headshrinker or something like that - mmmmm ! Its a beautiful bay, no road access and no dock - you have to arrive by dinghy, or walk from the main dock round over some rocks and a beach to get there.
