Location...and the fact that while the city itself is a dump...the suburbs are great places to live with relatively low crime rates, lots of things to do, and big business nearby.

Well I have never been into Detroit but I have been around it. When we drove from and to Detroit airport, rather than driving through it, we drove around it. Now that is telling you something!!

Detroit is still the 'auto capital' of the world, maybe even now more so with Ford and GM's ownership and partnerships with many overseas auto companies not to mention DaimlerChrysler. The dollar value of worldwide financial operations and decisions made in the greater Detroit area would stagger the uninitiated.

Also, associated experimental, testing and prototype as well as supplier headquarters facilities in the area are probably second to no other location. We had a saying at GM that with our resources, we could design from a clean sheet, build, fly to the moon and back within an 18-month time span (too bad we couldn't do a freaking car!) but that's beside the point. I will miss the overnight solutions to sometimes necessary custom-build stuff I occassionally get envolved in when I move down south. Detroit-proper as a city still sucks big time, but you can't beat the resources and expertise readiily available for most industrial ventures. Regards...Jack

No offense, cause parts of Texas can be real bad...but Detroit is one giant ghetto....

Avoid at all costs. It has never had the urban renewal that some of the rust belt cities have enjoyed.... Hopefully, this situation will reverse.

The fascination is the legacy US auto industry that is still located 'near' there. Other than that---it's just a big, poor, crime ridden city...

Points well taken, Greg, except for one mistake.

The world headquarters of the world's largest auto company is ACTUALLY located in downtown Detroit in the Renaissance Center (that ironically Henry Ford built) on the Detroit River. Regards..Jack

Ah yes, nothing like a refreshing breath of ignorance from Greg. When was the last time you were in Detroit Greg? I've been there a few times over the past year, and its no different than any other city. It has its nice areas, and it has its bad areas/ghettos. The nice areas far out weigh the bad. Stop making opinions based on outdated stereotypes.

Unless something has changed in the last three years...then my comments stand.

I was there for a conference for four days with hosts that were from Detroit--plenty of time to form an opinion that I DID NOT want to be there after they showed us around the area.

It's an opinion. Specifically, how is that ignorant?

If in my opinion, 2 + 2 = 5, then my opinion would be ignorant.

As for around the area...what, did you circle around the ghetto a few times and call it a day?  Insane

Ive lived in Metro Detroit all my life (and was actually born within city limits). There are a few good things:

For starters, lazy police. Metro Detroiters drive incredibly fast and crazy. Its actually fun and nowhere else in the country have I done 85-90mph in a road train.. Only at home.

Vernors Ginger Ale

Sanders hot fudge sundaes

Euchre!!!

The suburbs are nice, Ive always lived in the suburbs of western wayne/southwestern oakland county and have lived a nice life.

Detroit has been economically degenerating for 30+ years. No huge surprise that a lot of folks don't like it---myself included. And yes...we spend quite a bit of time out of the city proper. Sorry, still not impressed. And I understand crime is outrageous as well.

If it's your cup of tea---good for you---visit all you want!

A lot of folks hate both Dallas and Houston---I love 'em. I was raised in Los Angeles and still have my family there----few cities evoke as much disdain as that--but it's likely my favorite city in the world.

To each, their own.....

To each their own indeed. I mean I hate L.A. with a passion. I do however like Dallas and Houston. And I even used to live in Dallas, so I speak from actual knowledge. Hey, its all good though.

LA is an easy target...it's likely on us native Angelinos that have a soft spot for it!
If I could maintain the same standard of living in LA as in Texas..I'd be back in a heartbeat.

Well, as a Detroit ex-patriate (with family still living there), I can say with authority that most of the comments above are valid. The city of Detroit itself never really recovered from the late 1960's race riots, and then the first Arab oil crisis of the early 1970s.

Detroit is a real American city; heavily industrialized, but straining to switch to a services-based economic reality. The economic apartheid that distinguishes the inner city from the suburbs has been that way for decades. But the larger metro area is very affluent (Oakland county in particular, and the Grosse Pointes).

The best part of SE Michigan remains the people; among the friendliest and most welcoming of any place in the U.S. And Detroit is the best sports city in America, what with 4 icon franchises (two of which have won recent, multiple championships), Michigan and Michigan State football and basketball. Add to this the highest number of personal watercraft in the U.S. (besides south Florida).

Maggs swings, it's a drive deep to left! The Tigers are going to the World Series!!!

Hey Trijetfan, what makes Cleveland so much more special than Detroit? Are you jelous that CLE has no flights to Tokyo, making your air traffic ERJ afer ERJ with a B1900 or 737 thrown in every hour?

I was born and have lived in the Detroit area all of my life. I love this area. And downtown Detroit is not bad. There really isn't anything more in downtown Cleveland than Detroit. Oh yeah, you might want to make sure your river isn't on fire.  Smile

What is so great about Detroit?....where else can you have gunfire ring out during a neighborhood block party....happened a few weeks ago....in Detroit.

I have made fun of Detroit quite a few times on this forum....in reality, I would not want to live anywhere else than Southeast Michigan. Detroit is making improvements...slow, I'll agree, and there is so much more to be done. Detroit will host the 2005 Major League All-Star game, the 2006 Super Bowl, and the 2009 NCAA Final Four (plus this years Ryder Cup golf championships in neighboring Birmingham).

Being from the suburbs, I would say the general SE lower Michigan region is a great place to live and parts of Detroit (non-ghetto) are nice also. A lot of work needs to be done in Detroit itself; however, don't overlook the rest of the region.

lazy police. Metro Detroiters drive incredibly fast and crazy. Its actually fun and nowhere else in the country have I done 85-90mph

Isn't that the truth... M-10/Lodge Freeway is a raceway!- posted is 55 mph, but we all know what the average speed is: at least 72-80 mph. Actually, today was a bit slow, on my way home from WSU, I was going about 68.

I-696 use to be really bad, but I noticed in the past few years it's starting to slow down to "near" posted speeds.  Big grin

Hey Stretch, I know you are talking about Southeast Michigan, but do people consider Lansing and Ann Arbor as part of the Detroit Metro Area?

Bob, is that going to be in The Palace or somewhere else? That would make a good excuse for a road trip!

Tiger119 --

The 2009 Final Four will be played downtown at Ford Field...Michigan State played a basketball game there last fall and drew over 70,000 people. Detroit has also been awarded a 2008 NCAA regional final.

From what my dad has had to say, he went to U of D, I've never been there. Detroit is a big Buffalo with lots more mfg for the auto industry. The people are just as friendly as us Upstaters, and I can attest to that. Many of my freinds at school from Metro Detroit are great people. One thing you are all forgetting that adds some life to Detroit:

MOTOWN!

First off, don't ever compare another city to Buffalo, unless that city is in Alabama, Mississippi, or Arkansas. Second, saying its a big Buffalo does a diservice to Detroit, and yes its very friendly people. Hell, if people can get along with me while I am badmouthing their baseball team in Comerica Park to no end and we all still have a good time, I'm good with that.  Big grin

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

don't consider Ann Arbor or Lansing part of the Detroit-proper community

Your right, when people talk about the Metro Detroit region, it's usually just the Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne County.

Lansing in no way is associated with Detroit (it's about 75 miles away from DET); and Ann Arbor definitely has it's own identity (U of M).

It's sad when you have to hide where youre from

Reminds me of one time, I was non-reving back from DFW and the agent was like; "Oh, what station are you from?" and I replied "Detroit"... she was like "Eww, Detroit?" ... seriously.

I consider the Metro Detroit Area to be Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Livingston, and Monroe Counties.

People drive to work in Detroit everyday from places like Howell, Brighton, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Monroe, Flat Rock, and the like. I even have a friend who used to commute to Redford from the Chelsea/Manchester area everyday!

Funny that you dont include Livingston County in the Metro region, The Detroit News has a Metro page specifically for Livingston.

Areas like Lansing and Flint (Ingham and Genesse Counties) arent considered part of Detroit because they have their own network television stations and commercial air service.

I guess, to answer the question that this topic is based on, Detroit is great because, well, its part of me. I'm familiar with it. I wouldnt be the same without it because Ive lived here all my life. We are friendly people, in fact we're some of the most charitable in the country (rated by some survey). We're no New York City but we still have plenty to do, and we know how to have fun. We have a rich history (which can be looked into further at www.detnews.com/history). Our history is what shapes us. Electronica was invented here, as was the mass produced automobile. Hell, Bill Boeing was born here! We have the single most important international bridge in the country. More trade dollars flow over the Ambassador Bridge everyday than anywhere else in the United States. Sure the urban core may not be as nice as Fifth Avenue or the Magnificent Mile, but what would Detroit be without the inept city government?
