Protest Groups Demand Visibility At DNC Next Week

Sun Jul 25, 2004 1:09 pm

From CNN:

Amid final preparations for the Democratic National Convention, security officials are preparing to lock down a huge area of Boston. But groups planning protests say the right to free speech has been sacrificed to the need for security. "We think the the city of Boston has gone way overboard in the name of security," a protest leader said.

Actually kind of funny once you think about it. When you think about who will be protesting (Republicans, Bush Supporters, etc.) and you think about thier political standing, especially with the Patriot Act, and how some of them want to postpone elections if there is a terrorist attack (*MAJOR* constitutional violation) it is funny that they are complaining. I suppose, well, they might think like this:

Since it doesn't effect us, we're fine with it, wait a minute, these security efforts will effect us? No, No, can't have that.

How much you want to bet that when it happens in New York for the RNC next month, they will be all fine with it?

What the article didn't mention is that the protest area is a small caged area with barbed-wire fences and netting a few blocks away from the FleetCenter.
--------------------------------
The security for this event will be horrible for the city of Boston. 40 miles or roads around the North End of Boston will be shut down. They are shutting down a 6 mile stretch of highway(the busiest in MA) everyday just before rush-hour at 4PM. Going from Somerville to downtown Boston will take 50-70 minutes, it's normally a 10 minute drive. I think I'll be sticking to the suburbs this week...

Sorry but they pissed that away at the WTO conference in Seattle a couple of years ago.

Both NYC and Beantown will be war zones, so to speak, during the conventions. L-188 is right, these protest groups, going to either convention, were done in by events in Seattle a few years back, and the obvious worry is that there aren't just the usual anarchists in the crowds, but trained terrorists, who could turn what happened at the '68 DNC in Chicago into a major terrorists attack. No one wants that.

The goal is to keep the President and Mr. Kerry safe, and the conventions safe. That's the over-riding concern, not if some nut group wants it's 15 minutes of fame.

Remember Boston is Kerry's hometown, he will do anything to gag the opposition.
Throwing the opposition in a cage is just what will happen to the everyone who opposes him if the communist wins the election...

Right, and Bloomberg won't do the same thing in NYC in September?

And besides, it isn't about gagging, from either side. There is a real fear of more than just protesting here, and you know OBL would love to screw up the elections by hitting one of the candidates.

But then again, Jwenting, you feel Kerry is a triator, so why am I not surprised that you only pick on him?

I don't understand why the Republicans here are in such an uproar? Remember that the secret service is handling security for BOTH the DNC and RNC. So expect the same measures taken by them.

Maverick, that didn't come out well, I know  Smile

What I meant to say was:

The opposition is going to get stifled in New York too. Is it because it's Bush's hometown? Of course not, it's because of security. A shame, but that's what the world has come to.

Throwing the opposition in a cage is just what will happen to the everyone who opposes him if the communist wins the election...

Well, since you believe that kind of stuff, could I perhaps interest you in some prime real estate on Jupiter?  Laugh out loud

Sorry, but these are the same people that, when Democratic protesters are protesting over Dubya's socalled "Free-Speech Zones", yells: Get over it!

I thought the Democrats were just one big motley association of protest groups to begin with? Hence, why would they ban their own?

If you all remember the WTO protests in Seattle, then it is necessary for these kinds of measures for both the Republican and Democratic conventions. Not to mention with today's terrorist threats.

Alex - apparently this is the worst time EVER to go to BOS - my bruv lives there, and he has inlaws arriving this week, and its MENTAL. You have to use public transport to get to/from the airport, because all the highways and tunnels are blocked off to private vehicles virtually all day. There isn't a hotel room to be had in a 50 mile radius of Boston, they are expecting something like 750000 additional vistors during the DNC week. So I hope you've booked somewhere. I believe the DNC is on for the whole of this week.

And don't forget all of the cabbies are ticked off at the Mayor because he gave out all of these $12 dollar vouchers to the delegates, but didn't wave the $4.50 Loagan airport fee for the cabbies, and isn't allowing them to pass the charges on to the client.

"How much you want to bet that when it happens in New York for the RNC next month, they will be all fine with it?"

Who would?
Most of the same protest groups at the DNC convention will be at the GOP convention.

Despite what the anti-free speech mavens on the right screech about, the ACLU - that unpopular free speech torch bearer - holds all those in political power accountable.

I think that the security at these conventions is over the top. If some anti-abortion protester wants to parade around with a poster of an aborted fetus, he/she should be allowed to. The cops can frisk the protesters and let them say their bit.

I'll end up getting shot down by an F-16. I can tell, my 757 will make it over there from MAN, the transponder will malfunction near the coast and then im a gonner. Sad

Another posibility is my presumed (illegal) drunkeness will get me shot on the streets by some dumb ass security guy.

Alex - even if the transponder doesn't go phut, now that the NSA know you're coming (they read this forum, you know), I'm sure the F16's will be waiting, fully armed  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Have you booked anywhere to stay when you get to BOS ?

Take the Metro - you have to catch a bus to the Metro station (doesn't take long), the Metro goes most places downtown (BOS is easy to walk round too). There's a ferry that goes to downtown from the airport as well - depends where you're staying I guess.

Jwenting- pull you head out of your ass. "Comrade Bush" has been doing this to protesters for years. If a Kerry administration caged protesters, he'd just be continuing the Buash legacey.
