The Best Song - Ever?

Tue Jul 27, 2004 7:01 am

Just wondering what my fellow A-netters favourite song of all time is? For me it has to be,

U2 - The streets have no name.

and joint first, A-ha - The sun always shines on TV, also Simple Minds - Belfast Child.

Cheers, Steve.

I can't decide... it all depends on the mood I am in. "Woodstock" by Matthews' Southern Comfort is great for those "don't want to do anything but listen to music and dream away" moments, "Every You Every Me" by Placebo (from Cruel Intentions) is great for the "screw the world" times, "Isobel" by Dido is good for the less happy moments, "Chocolate" by Kylie Monogue just screams "turn on" even though she whispers all the time, "Smoke on the Water" by Señor Coconut (sort of a parody) is just great fun... no way to decide.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Bristolflyer, I agree every time that B-52's tune is on in the pub (always on the Karaoke twice a night) I have to go for a walk outside I HATE IT!!!!

Glad to see a few people have mentioned U2 and Fleetwood Mac which are great favourite groups of mine.

I agree with Aviancegirl, West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys is a great tune, was that their first? I think it was.

I think I will play a few of your choices tonight with a few cold beers.

    Cheers, Steve.

AMX, yes you are! without doubt the best decade, it seems everyone has my taste, minutes ago I downloaded Tears for Fears and Boston and two seperate people mentioned them. I think the Boston - More than a feeling was released in 77 but it sounds like yesterday.

Why are there no manufactured bands here and Boy bands? Could it be because they are crap? Just wondering.

Bristolflyer, did you rate the "always on my mind" song that the Pet Shop Boys did?

    Cheers, Steve.

Bach's Mass in B Minor is generally considered to be the best, although the consensus is that Beethoven is the best composer ever.

Their music will live forever. You can't say that about most of the songs posted above, although most of them are good songs.

For a great inspirational video, go to the link. It's Warren Zevon's "Keep Me In Your Heart" from his final work - The Wind. It is inspirational and sad at the same time (knowing he had terminal cancer at the time it was recorded).

Tristar100, it was the first time I heard the song and thought it was ok, I was young and thought that they had written it.

The Elvis one (I guess the original) is awesome, it almost makes you want to be mean to your wife/girlfriend just so you can play that to her and she'll come running back!

No, seriously. Here are the indisputable then best songs ever:

    Swamp Thing- The Chameleons (UK)
Once in a Lifetime- Talking Heads
    Pictures of You- The Cure
    Eight Miles High- The Byrds
Left of the Dial- The Replacements
    Autobahn- Kraftwerk
Monkey Gone to Heaven- The Pixies
Devil in my Car- The B-52s
In a Big Country- Big Country (off the album Big Country)
    Liebesspieler- Die Toten Hosen

Kudos to those who mentioned The Sun Always Shines on TV. Additional honorable mention to "Dont Change" by INXS and "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy
"Sympathy is something that shouldn't be bestowed on the Yankees. Apparently it angers them." - Bob Feller
