How Bad Are Drivers In Your City?

Fri Jul 30, 2004 10:15 pm

Up here in Sorrycuse its not too bad. Most of them know what the hell they are doing. But we have our bad drivers.

Boston is another story, I was there about 2 weeks ago. The drivers a horrible there. No way I would buy a nice car if I lived there. Its liable to get destroyed within 2 weeks of buying it.

Ath Cliath drivers are not too bad and quite friendly, except on highways where they still have to learn the concept of accelerating on the on-ramps...

Drivers in the S. of France are pretty terrible - therefore I fit right in ! Mostly we drive to fast and too aggressively (its the Italian streak), have no respect for pedestrians (or "targets" as they are referred to), double and triple park wherever we feel like (I personally never do this, as I find it extremely annoying), park on pavements, "target" crossings, wherever. Speed limits are for guidance only, and we are all still stuck in the old French method when dealing with roundabouts (traffic circles) ie. zoom straight on completely disregarding all traffic already on the traffic circle, despite the big "CEDEZ LE PASSAGE" signs. All good fun.

Paris has the worst drivers I have seen. Driving on the pavement (sidewalk) seems to be an acceptable means of avoiding having to stop at red lights.

I also saw an elderly woman parking in a space that was so tight she couldn't open her doors - she ended up climbing out of her trunk!

If you watch the traffic using the roundabout around the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs Elysees on average you will witness an accident every 5 minutes.

More anthropological evidence that the Greeks have been there before and left their mark. (though they had only chariots at the time..)
Still, and fortunately, your region has had other influences over the centuries.

Here, conservatives and tradionalists as we/they are, ancient rules are still in force.
To name but a few: the heaviest chariot has priority on other chariots, all chariots and loaded animals have priority on pedestrians, the fastest way between two points is the straight line, roadsigns and other modern times postings are intended for tourists, one-way road indications are for the sole purpose of garbage-collector chariots.

Columbus has its share of bad drivers (many women in huge SUVs on phones), but I've seen worse.

What I've noticed most are pretty cautious. When I do 70 in a 65 on my way home from school, I find myself moving the passing lane quite a bit.

Also, whenever it rains or there is even a trace of snow, forget about even hitting the speed limit on the freeways.

They aren't bad here, occasionally you will get a cluster of idiots who attempt to run you off the road. We have the same problem as UTA too, people accelerate to about 50mph on the sliproad and then stay there, extremely frustrating when you have to stay behind an articulated lorry for 5 mins before you can accelerate to normal motorway speeds in the middle lane.

In town we have the 'soccer moms' in their 'SUV's', I already hate them, they are so fucking pointless and i've already been hit in a car park by one. Some dumb mom reversing out of a parking space and running into the back of me.

Upstate NY drivers in general are pretty decent. But what I hate more than anything else is driving on the Thruway. The posted limit is 65mph, which is all fine and good. Traffic in the right lane moves at 65, but then you get idiots sitting in the left lane floating around 70. For a guy who normally does 75-80 in a 65 zone this is frustrating as hell. Come to think of it I'll be on the Thruway this afternoon on my way to YYZ... should be tons of fun.

The other thing that I have noticed is that drivers up here are a bit more timid or not in a hurry. Which is a problem b/c I am much more assertive and defensive than most other folks on the road.

Iakobos - I think this part of France has had more external cultural influences than most, all of whom were/are diabolical drivers ! Greeks, Romans, Moors, Goths, Burgundians, Catalans, Genovese, Corsican, French - you couldn't find a worse road-manners mixture, unless Nice had been invaded by Hong Kong Chinese.  Laugh out loud

As an ex-Bay Stater, I can get away with saying that.

There was a book out back in the '70s and '80s called, Wild In the Streets, a complete guide to driving around the Boston area. The book's a hoot.
In the book, the recommended car for Boston driving is:

a 1960 Ford Falcon sedan with some rust, dents & dings plus a loud exhaust. No one will come near you.

Worse car for Boston driving: 1978 Corvette (I just gave you a hint as to when this book came out).

Detroit drivers are famous for how bad they are. Anybody who lives here/lived here will know what Im talking about.

Reuther, Jeffries, Ford, Chrysler... etc.. all can be considered racetracks. 90mph is pretty common on these freeways (and others). All except I275 from Five Mile to the Oakland County line, because of the damn Livonia Police.. I like to call this stretch of freeway "The valley of death" because of the amount of police that patrol it.

Alot of people here "jackrabbit" from lights, which cause accidents because alot of people also like to run "old yellows" and reds. If your ass isnt on the gas pedal .03 milliseconds after a light turns green, expect a horn.

Detroiters also have this habit of switching lanes really fast and cutting across multiple lanes.

Turn signal usage is low, as well.

If you leave even a car-length in between you and the car in front of you, someone will attempt to squeeze in there.

Yeah, Boston sucks, by in large.. I was surprised that Montreal was pretty bad when I was up there also.

Metro Orlando, between the old people and the young punks was remarkably bad as well. Throw in a the 2:00 shower and it's comedic.

Birmingham, Alabama. Absolutely, positively the biggest idiots in the country. And then they try to drive! The roads around here are a little hilly, but not too bad. For some reason, the tractor trailers think they need to line up three or four abreast while climbing the hills. Also, in the areas where there is a curve in the highway, apparantly it's a state law that you have to slam on your brakes halfway through the curve; just enough to have to slow down from 70+ to 35 within seconds, only to round the corner to see.....you guessed it, absolutely nothing and accelerate right back up to 70+. And don't get me started on merging. They think it's brain surgery.

...If your ass isnt on the gas pedal .03 milliseconds after a light turns green, expect a horn.

That drives me absolutely insane, too.

But, now it doesn't seem as bad as it used to be. At least the last three or four times I've been there- as recent as two weeks ago. Big grin Boston's aggressive drivers have pretty much relocated to ATL.  Big grin

Yes, Atlanta drivers are horrible. I see this first hand while driving around town on my route two days a week. Today for example, I saw this woman almost get into two wrecks in less than 45 seconds. I was loading some totes into the van when this woman was wanting to make a left turn and when she started to make the turn, she ignored the fact that there was a driver coming down the street. That driver had to slam on brakes and hit the horn. This same woman pulled into the parking lot of the hotel I had made a delivery at, made a U-turn and got into the wrong lane. The street (Ravinia Pkwy) is a four lane with a median dividing the lane, she started driving the wrong way and nearly hit me. We got drivers doing 40 mph in the middle lanes. The average speed on Atlanta's interstates is 75 miles an hour. Speeding is so bad on our roads that the 10 mph cushion is now around 20 mph. A few months back, one of the TV stations had one of their news crews spend time with a local cops going after speeders. One of the cops basically said that "If we went after everybody doing 70 mph, we'd had a traffic jam on the side of the road". We got people who tailgate and when they pass you, they give you a dirty look like it's your fault the lane is slower than the others (Not my fault, as I'm the one stuck behind the dumbass doing 10 miles under the speed limit.). The use of turn signals is almost a lost art in Atlanta, I think I'm one of about 7 that still use them.

If you think the drivers in Atlanta are bad, the pedestrians are just as bad. The crossing signal is red and these folks still cross the street. Many of them are too lazy to walk 25-50 feet to the nearest crosswalks. One of these days, I'm going to end up hitting one of them downtown because they are paying attention. There's a group in Atlanta trying to educate drivers about pedestrian safety; they need to educate the pedestrians first.

In Vienna they werent bad, they were just insane. You get used to cutting off/being cut off with just cm between your car and the other idiotst car after a while.

In Sweden I think most drivers suck. If you come in the overtaking lane at 140 kph, dont be surprised if a car with a mobile home behind it will pull into your lane doing 90 kph when you are 50 meters beind them.

JG,

Sure a lot of guest tribes went around, but not all of them were bad or dangerous drivers.
Romans (ancient that is) were extremely well organized and disciplined, and invented the two way roads with cafes at reasonable intervals. (my eternal thanks)
Moors/Sarrazins did not have chariots, only horses and camels.
The Goths were too slow to be dangerous, their chariots were pulled by bulls, and even the bulls were drunk.
The Genovese were (and still are) too lazy, they came by sea.
The Catalans realized very soon that there was no chorizo available and went back.
...and you did not get the Hells' Angels of that time, the famous Normen.
.......I dont think the Brits (and the occasional Scot) had invented the travel package that early.

N312RC did a great job summing up Detroit's highways. Expect the left lane to be 80-90 MPH standard.

If you leave even a car-length in between you and the car in front of you, someone will attempt to squeeze in there.

Even if there is not a car length, they will still try. It has happened to me.

Let it be known that Southern California has the WORST DRIVERS on the planet!!Not a day goes by that I don't cheat death on the freeways. Idiots on cell phones, making exits from three lanes over, and just having one stupid attack after another. Nothing gets me going more than people who can't drive.

Where I live in Bergen County, NJ has for the most part decent drivers - the local roads are usually no greater than 35 mph, and due to the large number of hills and curves in the road (it is a hilly area), you can't really drive past the speed limit without putting yourself in danger.

However, Manhattan is another story. I recently got my driver's permit after doing 6 hours behind-the-wheel with a driving school on quiet suburbian streets, and I have no clue how anyone could learn to drive in New York. It is insane! My dad has been driving for 30 years and he still tenses up when he drives in the city - the drivers there are notoriously bad. The worst offenders? Taxicab drivers that think they own the road because they're in a yellow car.

I've been through Nashville, Birmingham (plenty of times), and Atlanta (only a few times), and none of them were all that bad. Although I've never driven during the rush hour in Atlanta.

Huntsville and the surrounding area is pretty decent. People in general are respectful about not trying to be left lane hogs, using their turn signals, etc. One of the reasons why we moved down here from Connecticut is because Mom was tired of dealing with the Hartford traffic and driving 65 on a snow covered interstate.

Traffic slows to about 10 mph at the very first sign of SNOW, however.

Those 65 mph speed limits in New England drive me nuts. The proper interstate speed limit is 70 mph (it'd probably be 80 down here if the federal government wasn't unconstitutionally preventing it).

Driving in Dallas isn't too bad. People are generally friendly and not too aggressive behind the wheel. Occaissionally, like in every city, you'll get some loser in a ricer that cuts you off, but other than that it isn't too bad. The nice thing is that, generally, everyone speeds on the freeways. Its not like Florida where you'll have some bluehair going 30 in the fastlane.

They are horrible in Orlando!!!!! First of all we have these damn tourists that are driving rental cars from Hertz/Avis/Alamo/ect. and have no idea where they are going so they drive in the left lane as slow as possibly. Second off we have these old people in their Cadilacs who dont have a clue what they are doing and pull out in front of you. Third off we have these little teeny boppers that just get their license and think they are invincible. I will be glad when I get out on patrol to write citations to these offenders.

On another note, Too many of these drivers down here like to run side by side/nose to tail where nobody can get through. If your going to run like that they get the hell off the damn road. Not only is it dangerous but it gridlocks traffic.

MIAMI IS THE WORST!!!

Seems they give out a license to any idiot!! I dont know maybe its the fact that we got alotta Old people on the road since Florida is "God's Waiting Room". My god they drive so freaking slow and half the time dont know what the hell they are doing or where the hell they are going. Also I dont know, maybe its cuz we have such a huge immigrant population, but people in Miami drive like they do back home. You know, insane and very very defensive, and ragging. We also have a serious road rage problem during mornings and afternoons since everyone's a long commuter to work. Especially on I-95, Its crazy, but hey!!

Cleveland drivers are pretty nice, no one really uses the horn, unless there is imminent danger. no one cuts each other off. avg speed is 5-10 mph above on 35 mph roads. 5-15 on highways. On the highway though when turning on your signal, people will usualy speed up to get past you, until theres no one left to past you. That can be annoying if your exit is right there, but o well. I find myself doing it all the time.

i sure do hate that. We got some pretty bad drivers in Houston because all they care about is getting we're they're going in thier SUV's thinkin the only solution to traffic is adding 10 lane freeways cutting through the neighborhood. There is huge opposition to expanding the Katy Freeway to 18 lanes. It won't help!!

Anyways as you get outa town, its not so bad. People wave to you as you drive down the farm roads here.

In Chile they are average, although we all get a little tense at peak hours.

In Argentina is bad... many large street junctions has not sign at all! no Stop or traffic lights: The stronger cross first.

The worst? Peru: just aweful, no speed limit, and the taxis horn you when they are abailable in case you want to take one; so you walk in Lima and you keep hearing horns again and again chasing you...
