DNC And RNC...waste Of Time?

Sat Jul 31, 2004 12:03 am

I've been watching the DNC lately and it reminds me a lot of the Oscars, Grammys, Tonys, etc...just a lot of self congratulatory nonsense. I suspect the RNC will be exactly the same. Does anyone believe anything these people say given both parties' track record? Are the DNC and RNC wastes of money and time? We all know what they SAY they are going to do, but what's more important is their track record. Who actually believes any of this goat-rodeo/circle jerk?

At one point in time the conventions were actually used by local party bosses to wrangel over platform issues. There was also a point in time when the Presidential candidate wasn't known for months in advance.

In many ways the conventions are anarchronisms. They are theater, pure and simple. But nobody really watches them. I suppose if we didn't know who the candidates were going to be 4 months before the convention date then they might still be of us to the public.

All the convention seems to be good for is lots of stock footage of middle-aged folks dancing, badly, to bad remakes of popular songs.

Conventions are certainly more fun when the primaries have been a close race, and there is actually a decision to be taken by the delegates as to who gets to be "the next President of the United States RAAAH RAAHHHHHHHHH".
Still, its fun to watch sad people in really stupid hats get hit in the head with balloons.

Does anyone feel there is something worthwhile to be had from either convention? Other than seeing protesters in a cage  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ?

I'm a political junky. I've always watched as much convention coverage as I could - but this year I simply couldn't get in the mood. I ended up watching less than an hour total the last 4 days, I don't expect to watch any more when the RNC comes around.

I've channel surfed and have been reading coverage on the convention off and on. it just didn't seem like they were really excited about Kerry....more about getting Bush out of office. Just kind of a big yawn and I'm not looking for much better at the RNC. Only difference being "four more years!"  Big grin

Since the US is more of a 2-party dictatorship (each with about 50% of the vote) as opposed to a true democracy, yes....it is indeed a waste of time.

Just 2 big partisan parties.

It's been thirty years since there was a meaningful convention.

But C-SPAN does let you see how many Democratic speakers are either the most ignorant fools ever or absolutely shameless liars.

And the worst part is that the federal government contributes $15,000,000 to each convention.

I haven't check but apparently GW's campaign website has Kerry's convention speech linked to the front page, so everybody can see how bad it is.
