F1: Button Signs For Williams For 2005

Fri Aug 06, 2004 6:09 am

Can someone confirm for me that Button has just signed a deal to return to Williams BMW for the 2005 season?

I can't seam to find anything about this anywhere. If it is true, this is very unexpected!

RE: F1: Button Signs For Williams In 2005

From F1-live.com:

BMW Williams
It’s a clean sweep at BMW Williams for 2005 with Juan Pablo Montoya off to McLaren Mercedes and the recovered Ralf Schumacher taking a seat at Toyota. New for the 2005 season is Mark Webber from Jaguar Racing with a great deal of hype to live up to. The number two – or second seat – at the team is still up for grabs with virtually every driver who has raced in the last four years linked to the team. Jacques Villeneuve is an outside bet, as is a returning Mika Hakkinen. More likely is the signing of someone like Nick Heidfeld or Olivier Panis. BMW insist that the nationality of the driver is of no importance, but do not be too surprised if it does in some way play a small part in the final decision making process. Sebastien Bourdais has also been linked with the team, but with a rumoured test to take place at the end of the season, the Champ Car star is at best an outside bet. And then there is Anthony Davidson...

Wow, what a surprise that Button joined BMW Williams.

But wasn't Montoya saying that the present car they have sucks big time, and that they need a new car?? I wonder why Button chose BMW Williams when he could have stuck with BAR. They have a very good car and he almost won a couple of races with it.

But, I think that all this shuffling around only helps Ferrari because, right now, they appear to be the most stable team in F1 with both their drivers staying put.

It was on the news this evening.

I'm slightly surprised. Williams is a much bigger team than BAR, but BAR has a better overall package at the moment. But, thing can, and will, change next year.

Hopefully Williams can do for Button what they did for Damo a few yrs back.

Shrewd move by Jenson Button.

The BAR is a better car this year than the Williams, but history would suggest that when the smaller teams find themselves in the position of having developed a good car, they often cannot maintain the demands of development, whilst the likes of Ferrari, Williams and McLaren do continue to improve their cars and the gap is once again reintroduced.

This year proves an example of this - the BAR was undoubtedly the second best car car at the beginning of the season - however at this point in the season the McLaren is much improved, as is Renault - BAR is still good, but the gap has narrowed or has indeed been reversed.

This cyclical nature, sees in 2004, BAR at their high point, and Williams at their low point - I'd be very suprised if by 2006 Williams hadn't developed a car far superior to BAR's 2006 efforts.

A couple of questions...
How come BAR hadn't got JB signed up for 2005 ?
Who will replace him at BAR - could this be a good opportunity for David Coulthard?
I don't like signatures...

Diesel

BAR had Button signed for 2005, but there is a clause in his contract that says that he can go to either of the top 3 teams at anytime, I think.

As for the replacement, if David Richards knows his trade (and believe me he does) he'll move Davidson up to second driver and leave Sato as number 1.

Davidson is quite fast, as he's shown in Friday practice throughout the whole season. On the other hand, it remains to be seen how he will cope with the extra-pressure, but I think it's a good gamble.

Oh, and about Button, I told you this was gonna happen people!  Big thumbs up (a little self-gloss, I got lucky on calling the name a few weeks ago Big grin)

ROFLMFAO!!!!! No one should compare Button to Damon Hill, who's got his place in F1 history as the most untalented champion ever Big grin Big grin Big grin

Very well, a very ambitious duo they got now, but no one who can develop a car, so it's going to be the engineers who'll have to do the dirty works!

Well, they'll be used to that by now since the current Williams duo does have the similar prob: Big mouthed wannabes who have no idea about technology...oh well... at least Button is a much better driver than Schu2 and Monty!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Did Webber insist to Frank Williams that whomever was to be hired next would be a clear No. 2 driver? Did Button agree to this churlish demand? As far as I see it, if you have not won an F1 driving title, you have NO business making those sorts of demands.

Not-so-Breaking news: this might not be over yet... BAR says Button is still under contract despite the exit clauses and that his move to Williams is invalid
