Do You Know The 53 States?

Somehow I think that the money these shysters made on those workbooks are going to go right back to the victims of this scheme...

I thought there were 55:

The regular 50, plus DC, Guam, Virgin Islands, Puetro Rico and Great Britain.

Since the areas except for GB  Smile/happy/getting dizzy mentioned by Jasepl are commonwealths and territory of the US, should they not be considered states? I mean Mass, Penn call themselves commonwealths but are considered states.

David, a commonwealth is a political system in which supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them. By that definition, the United States is also a commonwealth, as are France and India and Argentina etc.

As for KY, MA, VA and PA, commonwealth is simply part of their official name. Just as Indiana's official name is "The State of Indiana", MA's official name is "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts". This does not mean there's any difference at all in their status within the union. Puerto Rico, on the other hand, is a self-governing territory (and not a state) within the United States, that also happens to have the word commonwealth in its official name.

DC, VI, GU and GB, however, are simply subject to American authority, whatever their names or official titles.

Jase, I intended this topic to be a discussion of the news event here, not an avenue for you to push your slanted political views. I've suggested deletion of your posts.

At any rate, my question to all is when will state governments start doing a better job of regulating and oversight of these sort of operations and what can they do to stop this stuff from happening again? I realize that with budgetary dollars becoming rather scarce it's more difficult but at the same time, isn't one of the functions of government to protect its citizens?

All schools, colleges, and universities that seek public funding or even just basic credibility are accredited by any one of the major regional accreditation agencies. These pay for diploma/degree places obviously are not and I really wonder how much supervision they get from the states to begin with.

I guess these outfits function on public ignorance, as I believe most if not all GED courses are free.

Okay, I didn't stick by your intentions. But whatever do you think I was pushing. If its the Canada and Britain bits, come on, that was a joke - a very funny one - and everyone knows that. Even the blind and deaf, and they can't read or hear it!

The rest of what I said, about the commonwealths, isn't anyone's political view, slanted or otherwise.

I don't understand your outrage toward the state. The guy got caught. They're going to throw "the book" at him. The citizens are being protected. The system works. Whats to fix?

There won't be any new states soon. It would mean recalling millions of flags and designing a new one. Unless there is an argument for 55 states, then you wouldn't have an uneven field of stars...

52 stars can be represented by 7/8/7/8/7/8/7.
53 stars can be represented by 8/7/8/7/8/7/8.
54 stars can be represented by 9x6.

All can be symmetrically displayed.

So when IS Puerto Rico becoming a state, then ? Isn't it about time ? It practically is one anyway.
