Best Film Ever

Fri Aug 13, 2004 2:41 am

What do you reckon the best film ever made was. I'm going for the original star wars because it was so ahead of its time.

Definitely a subjective question. According to the American Film Institute, the greatest American film ever made was "Citizen Kane". I haven't seen it as of yet.

My two favorite movies are...

"Amadeus": Brilliant acting, interesting plot, costumes and score were flawless... I could go on and on. I just love this film.

"Fargo": It still makes me laugh. In my opinion, the best casting done for a film ever, I couldn't imagine any character in that movie being portrayed by anyone else.

I'd say it's between the LotR trilogy, Titanic, or Gone with the Wind.

Best movie ever doesn't exist! Movies from different genres cannot be compared! LotR cannot be compared to Citizen Kane and to hold a horror movie to the Godfather would pretty stupid!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

I'll have to agree with:
--The Best Years of Our Lives
--All About Eve
--Citizen Kane
--also partial to American Beauty and Rebecca

LOTR--gimme a break---it's a CGI film---no actors needed. Grossly overrated.

Dr. Strangelove. Kubrick at his best, Peter Sellers in 3 different roles, all played credibly, Slim Pickens playing the cowboy hat-wearing Major T.J. "King" Kong, and the first on-screen appearance of James Earl Jones. Combine that with fairly biting satire and I think it's one of the best films ever.

Others I'd have to award props to:

2) Godfather
3) Memento
4) Bridge on the River Kwai
5) Around the World in 80 Days (the 1956 Michael Anderson version, not the crappy Jackie Chan remake/crapfest) based on the sheer logistics. The film featured 43 actors in cameo roles, required over 34,000 costumes, involved over 8,500 animals, was shot on 140 sets spread out over 6 studios in Hollywood as well as studios in London, Hong Kong, and Japan, requiring the cast and crew to fly over 4,000,000 miles.

It´s completely subjective. I can acknowledge many other people´s favourite films as "well made", but many of them leave me cold and unimpressed simply because they don´t "push my buttons".

One of my favourite films is Blade Runner for its combination of an interesting idea, dense atmosphere, great visuals and outstanding soundtrack.

But I would never claim that everybody would "have to" like it as much as I do just because of that.  Wink/being sarcastic

American History X in my opinion is the best movie ever made. American Beauty comes close second.

Never was a fan of Star Wars or any Sci-Fi movies.

Come on boys and girls,

Where is "Jaws", it must be up there in the top three best ever films, I love it even though he was a tiddler!

If you want low budget good films, it has to be "The Fog", great setting, eerie music, good story, Jamie Lee-Curtis.

Or, "Top-Gun", come on its up our street? great effects, good story, horny aircraft, Tom Cruise sorry I ment MEG RYAN.

Or Deepthroat - I have to go now!

Cheers, Steve.

While I like "Dr. Strangelove", to me, Kubrick's best work was "A Clockwork Orange", and is one of my all-time favorite films. While the Godfather Trilogy (Even though Part III bites) is a classic, my favorite Mob film is "Casino". So here we go:

Drama: Casino
Sci Fi: A Clockwork Orange
Comedy: Clerks
Sports: Slap Shot
Animated: Toy Story
Teen Comedy: Breakfast Club
Parody: Airplane!

Uhm... how come nobody said Scarface yet? Al Pacino will be a legend for a hell of a long time. This movie absolutely beats the sh*t out of other "mafia" movies, but Goodfellas runs pretty close. These are just my favorite kinds of films. My favorite TV show is the Sopranos. Go figure.

However, come december it will definitely be "Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera"

Oh man...this is really tough..if I had to choose just one it would be Citizen Kane. I would rather list the top five though....CItizen Kane, Bladerunner, The Best Years of Their Lives, Casablanca, and a tie between Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, with honorable mention to Shichinin no samurai (The Seven Samurai).

Man this list could actually start some arguments, because there are some really good movies you cannot even get to in this small space.

Rocky Horror Picture Show. I used think it was just for freaks, but then I finally saw it. It is very odd, very strange, and sort of quirky. Although, hell, I loved it. It was just so bizaare. I have never seen anyhting so bizaare and with such a (odd) but awesome score. Very strange and not for somebody who is uptight and conservative. It is very strange, but the strangeness is so entertaining. And who knew Susan Surandon actually used to look so hot? Awesome movie!  Big thumbs up

Greg, THANK YOU for saying that about LOTR.... I agree!

You all are going to roll your eyes, but my favorite movie is "Coal Miner's Daughter", the biography of Lorretta Lynn.

Sissy Spacek sang all of the songs...which I think is impressive...and she and Tommy Lee Jones did such a great job.

Re LOTR being overrated. It's not ABOUT the acting, which is good but not Meryl Streep, admittedly. Its about the overall vision, the commitment and the amazing work that went into to make what by anyone's standard is an exceptional movie that managed (arguably, at least to some people) to capture intact the spirit and meaning of the awe-inspiringly complex book upon which it was based.

If not for CGI, the movie itself could not have been made, it's that simple. But CGI can be good too ! Imagine for instance Spartacus, or Ben Hur, with instead of ropey and completely obvious models and matte-painting, 2004-quality CGI backgrounds and effects. Neither would lose any of their grandeur and both would be spectacularly enhanced.
