XP SP2 And Forum Changing

Sun Aug 15, 2004 5:12 am

Well I just installed the gold version of Windows XP SP2 that I downloaded from Technet. It doesn't seem to have broken too many things, but one thing that IS broken is the ability to switch forums on A.net by using the pulldown menu.

Any suggestions for getting this functionality back?

It's not on the MS update page nor have I heard of any gold, silver versions? The MS windows i/net page implies it is not out yet, it says "Get ready for Windows XP Service Pack 2"

SP2 was RTM Friday the 6th.

It is not out on the Windows Update site yet, but if you go to Technet you can get a network download that is intended for IT professionals (like myself)

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx

Beware, it's a 270+ MB download! Took about a hour and a half on my 384K connection here at the house.

The Windows Update verison will be smaller as it will be customizable based on what files are needed. The Technet version includes all files.

At the above site, following the link "Download and Deploy Service Pack 2 to Multiple Computers" will take you to a download page.

I have said in the past, after beta testing it, and still was when MS decided to throw something out to keep consumers happy, it was loaded with bugs, mainly startup errors, and some various lockups and connection problems. I had to reinstall XP a few times, then I said screw it, plus there are also alot of problems with uninstalling SP2, so if you try to, you probally wont be able to. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise is serving me just fine  Smile.

You're using Server 2003 Enterprise as a desktop OS? Yeah, I'm sure you have a legitimate license to do that...

I haven't had many problems with XP that weren't self created, btw, like changing motherboards without reinstalling! Even in that case, reinstalling Service Pack 1 cleared up all the issues I created with my hardware change. But anyways, I digress.

Yeah, but I also use my PC as a light file server to share and network with my 2 other desktops and a laptop. Still not an enterprise I know, but it runs like a dream.

There's no difference between Server 2003 Standard and Server 2003 Enterprise except for the amount of hardware it can handle (32GB RAM) and also that it can do 8 way cluster.

For anything that doesn't have more than 4 processors or 16GB RAM, or require an M$ cluster, it's a waste of money. Out of our 40+ M$ server environment at work, only about 6 run Enterprise, the 8 way DB servers and the clustered boxes.

For your application in fact, I would recommend Linux running a Samba share, it's free!

Getting back to the original topic...

Sounds like Microsoft managed to either disable or break their JavaScript implementation in the new version of IE included with SP2.

Of course, you should be using Mozilla instead of IE anyway...  Big grin

I have had a few issues since putting XP SP2 on, luckily I ghosted the system first and was able to backtrack.

I just read an article where IBM has advised its users not to load it yet due to incompatibility problems.

Vulcan01,

That article was referring to internal IBM systems. Like most companies do when any patch comes out, the IT department will test the patch to verify it doesn't break any of the software they use before deploying it to employee workstations and servers.

Yeah, youre lucky you made a backup, once SP2 is installed ,to get it out you need to reinstall XP, toal mess. And BTW, I am typing this from my new WIN2003 PC, working great even for a home-type application. And I know linux is free, but someone gave me their copy after switching to linux. Stable OS so far, tried FS04 on it, works good.

Though I run Server 2003 Ent as my main OS on my laptop, I use Windows XP on several of my other computers that I own. All have been installed with SP2 no issues. So far, but I don't use them that much.

But either way check your java script settings.

I wasn't aware of a Gold version either, I downloaded the 475 MB ISO from MSDN (subscriber only).

I have it running on all of my computers (4 of em, 2 laptops and 2 desktops) with no issues. We have also started deploying it where I work and have yet to have any issues whatsoever.

Have you had any other issues with it?
