RE: Why Is Olympic Attendance So Low?

Tue Aug 17, 2004 2:28 pm

The Greek Olympic officials were interviewed on this subject today. They said the following:

1. The earliest days of the Games are less interesting in any Olympics.

2. The earliest days feature events that are not favored by Greeks.

3. They said they have sold their 'goal' of 3 million tickets and they are happy with the revenue, and that the crowds will be there in a few days. (Ticket sales at Sydney were 5 million).

Just repeating what was said!

It's because the tickets are so damn expensive. Many travel agencies in Denmark dropped the plans of selling tickets because they couldn't sell them.

The costs of this olympic games has been much higher than expected, so they have to collect their money somehow. And that is by high prices on the ticket unfortunatly.

Wow, some very good points so far!...this may be a popular thread. I thought maybe the cost of the security was covered by several governments, and corporate sponsors.

On ABC news they said that another reason for the low attendance is because alot of Greeks are on holiday this month.

Then you had four years of news stories questioning if Athens would be ready for the games, and then figure about 2 years worth of stories (At least in the US) worried about the security at the games.

L-188,

Some european countries has also been worried about the security at the games. Some countries even brought their own "little" security team to look after them. But I can't remember which countries it was. I have only heard of it.

That is really a shame that it has to be like that at one of the most peaceful events in the world.

Well having teams to guard a nationsl athletes, I can appreciate that.

But you get stories about how there will get general massive security, you have to sit back and wonder if the hassel will be worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate it too. I just think it sad that it has to be like that. With all these soldiers and police officers running around you all the time, I would get sick and tired of it. I would feel like a terrorist my self.

Just look in Atlanta 96' when the bomb went off. And in Munich 72' where the Israeli athletes got slaughtered. I can understand why they don't want things like that to happen again. So this is one fo the reasons I support all the security they can get as possible.

Ive heard all the reasons mentioned here before on the news. What i dont neceserally agree with is the theory that most Athenians left town! I mean why, its the olympics for gods sake!

It's because the tickets are so damn expensive. Many travel agencies in Denmark dropped the plans of selling tickets because they couldn't sell them.

QIguy24

Actually its been reprted on Sky News Australia that tickets for events are actually cheaper than they were in Sydney. But then again Sydneys overall particiapation rate was much higher than Athens!

Qantasflyer,

Sounds funny. But here they say that the tickets for this year is some of the most expensive tickets ever. And it's just not the tickets. Everything in Athens is expensive now. Hotels and so one. The prices has raised to almost the double. No one wants to use their lifesavings to watch some games.

I would love to see the Olympics live, but not at these costs.

So take an aircraft and come to support your athletes.
I was in the opening ceremony I was yesterday in weightlifting (our first medal at home) I will be today at the beach voley and at the closing ceremony.
But you have to know 1.that Greece has a small population, 2.was a victim of defamation by many foreign channels and journalists (mostly British , American and Australian) so there was a low flow of tourists for the games, 3.Indeed the 15th. of August is for the Greeks the peak time of their vacation so they evacuate any town center and they flee to the islands and the sea side resorts, 4.Kenteris and Thanou made the worst impression to the Greek fans and they discouraged them from attending the games, 5.and finally many sports are indeed in their early stages or there are not sports that are popular in Greece.
Come to the Games! believe me you will be amazed by the venues the environment in the stadiums and you will discover Athens.
We are waiting for you

Its not the first time in Olympic History that the attendance is so low,In Syndney games free tickets were given to increase the attendance and in Seul, soldiers and students were taken to stadium for free to make it look crowded.

I don't think the security should be a concern.I think security measures are the highest in history of the olympics(and the most expensive). The hotels and living expenses are increased due to the games and it may be a great factor also.

SX FAN,the opening ceremony was great, congradulations and thank you for such a great show  Big thumbs up .First winning the European Championship and hosting the Olypic Games,it must be a best year for Greece  Smile

It is true that many Athenians have left Athens for some vacation time since the 15th of August is for many a good opportunity to go away from the city but most people are still here because they were not given any time off during the Olympic Games.
The truth is that my country hasn't received the best publicity during the last couple of years and that discouraged a lot of potential visitors. Furthermore, prices WERE a bit high because most greeks involved with tourism wanted to earn as much as possible during the Olympics but because of the disappointing amount of tourists they lowered the prices (a bit late if I may say so). The prices were so good that I had the cheapest and longest holidays so far in the islands.

I was wondering the same thing. The thin crowd was very apparent during the women's gymnastics events on Sunday, and less apparent in the swimming arena.

It's a shame. As I remember, events in Atlanta in '96 were pretty much sold out. I attended both the first and last days of gymnastics and the arena seemed equally full both times.

And as I recall, tickets weren't exorbitantly expensive either (or else I wouldn't have gone.)

George Bush's war on Terrorism & the exchange rate (euro vs. Dollar) are the two main reasons so few Americans are in Greece.

Greece isnt necessarily an easy place to get to either.

It is not just a days drive from the economic powerhouse nations of Europe, nor are there many direct flights from the states/canada/australia and asia , if any?

Not to mention that Greece isn't in the best neighborhood. The Balkans, though vastly improved from where they were, still have quite a ways to go before things are all better.

I second SXFAN's opinion to a certain point.

For an average Greek, tickets (for supposedly "hot" events) are very expensive.
Locals do not have a tradition of going to sports venues, even the popular ones, and they are basically not interested by the sport itself.
August is the holiday month, cities are deserted, and this is a long standing tradition.
There are contingency plans to bring in the army conscripts and the schools to fill in venues during the last days if the low attendance pattern remains.

SX, do not confuse defamation and criticism. If the Greeks had made everything voluntarily to draw criticism in the last years, they could not have done it better. When confronted by criticism, the relevant authorities are invariably reacting with their gutts instead of their brains, which does nothing but putting oil on the fire. They will never learn.
Did you see the Skynews journalist making a fool of security measures ?

I do not think that the Kenteris-Thanou-Tzekos saga has a marked influence on the attendance, except perhaps for a few hundred less during some athletic events. Found guilty or not, their constant irresponsible behaviour (it goes for years, not one week) is a shame and the federation should make sure to ban them representing their country in the future, and Tzekos for coaching anyone in any sport ever.(you know about his feats at AEK ?)

This said, the opening ceremony was a first class performance and everything sport-wise is very well organized. Good Games !

And flights to ATH from the United States during the peak summer season aren't cheap.

The news in Australia has been reporting that hotels have soared to astonishing prices. A three star hotel costs about $1000 AUD a night! thats roughly about 500 EURO. Many of the athletes families are camping out! Athens has lately been an expensive place to go on holidays i remember both in 98 and 02 it being extremely expensive. While i uderstand that organises want to make as much profit as possible and the Olympics being a golden opportunity to do so, that price for accomodation is simply unreasonable!

RE: Why Is Olympic Attendance So Low?

Well, it seems that the attendance the past week has soared to full stadia and venues. On the first week of the games, Greeks were buying tickets with a rate of 80.000 per day!!! On August 18th they passed the 3 million tickets mark and by August 20 more tickets than in Barcelona were sold.

The main reasons for the low attendance on the first days were:

1) Relatively expensive tickets but not so expensive. But a Greek has to choose. He cannot watch 10 events, he buys for 5.
2) Three years of "terror" media reports made the americans, especially, reluctunt to attend.
3) Athens is an expensive city and everybody knows it.
4) Greece has a population of just 10 million. The locals are too few for such a large scale event.
5) The organisers thought that the foreigners would sweep the tickets. They were wrong and in July they launched a massive campaign in Greece in order to sell the (many) remaining tickets. Apparently they were succesfull.

The low attendace is a non issue the second week of the games. Of course some media are seeking every small opportunity to yell "bloody murder" for Athens. Untill today nothing has happened. Greece has organised and is running one of the most successful Olympic Games in history.

This is the most idiotic post I've read for while on a.net. WTF, are you talking about?  Pissed  Confused The war in fmr. Yugoslavia ended YEARS ago and it never affected everyday life in Greece in any way, except maybe less tourists, because many people are OBVIOUSLY ignorant enough to get scared easily by media reporting events hundreds miles away. They really should start teaching you some geography in school...
Bulgaria, Turkey (Greece's neighbors) are very popular summer destinations, there are loads and loads of scheduled and especially charter flights from all over Europe.

There is a lot of money to be made by these olympics. I remember in 2000 a friend of mine going on holiday with his family to France and leasing out his house to an American couple for A$10,000 a night.

If I owned a villa in Athens, I'd be skiing in New Zealand right now.

Qantas,

Either your friend is telling his dreams loudly, or his house is a huge mansion on the beach with view on the opera, speedboat at anchor, French chef on standby in the kitchen and bellydancers at the ready.

If you owned a villa in Athens, you would be on holidays perhaps but chances are big your house would be empty.
Of the 5,000 houses and appartments accredited to host visitors during the Games, a little less than 1/3 have seen some bookings.

Iakobos -

You doubt my sincerity? I can assure you, having visited his large house on Sydney's north shore many times that his figures are accurate. no French chef or bellydancers though.

I'm surprised to hear there hasn't been a similar market for house occupation in Athens.

I do not doubt your sincerity, perhaps I am naive to think that someone would give 10,000$ (even Australians) per night just for renting a house, whichever it is.

The housing market poor performance is witness of the (rather) low attendance in the sport venues.
The OG have apparently had a very negative impact on tourism this year.
Even the best 5-star places are offering packages at prices that defy any logic (example: 79E for a 2adults+2chidren suite with h/b in one of the very best places in Greece), and still it is a flop.

Let me list several reasons:
Fears of terrorism, especially as Greece is relatively close to the middle-east and the war in Iraq.
High costs of tickets in a place with a modest incomes of it's own people.
Small national population.
Isolation by land to most of Europe, thus discouraging travel by train or car from adjacent countries.
Held in August, so vacations in most places in the world, including the host country
Extemely hot weather (often in high 30's C/high 90's F during the day).
Fears of venues not being ready.
Fears by Americans of being subject to terror attacks, or fears of having to open their ears and listen to some critizism of USA policy.
Improvements in TV coverage all over the world, with each countries' coverage tailored to the sports most linked to their country or region of the world or possible medal winning athletes. Why go to the games if you can see them on TV.
High costs of airfares, accomidations, as too high of expections of demand and as peak summer travel months.
Other local/regional/sports distractions, like NASCAR racing in the USA.
People don't have the time to travel then.
Overall less interest in the Summer Olympics as is summer and vacation time in the Northern Hemisphere, so more interested in being outside, rather than watching TV indoors. Also, many of the events are not something people are particulary interested in.
