Ottawa A.netters

Wed Aug 18, 2004 8:08 am

I am about to join your ranks in a few weeks, when I start studying at one of your fine universities. So what is there to do in Ottawa (except drinking and clubbing in Quebec)? Anything? Anything at all? And let's be honest, how cold does Ottawa really get?  Smile How are photo opportunities at YOW? Anyone go shooting/spotting there? And what about flight training in the area?

How many a.netters are there in Ottawa anyways? Would any of you happen to be university students?

P.S. does anyone keep in touch with former member Whistler_CYOW? I can't reach him by email.

LY744, soon to be an "Ottawian"(?).

LY744,
Which school O or C ? Lots to do here, musuems everywhere (CAvM is great) always something going on, Sports- CFL 'Gades  Big thumbs up , NHL Sens  Sad , MJH '67s, plus the Lynx AAA B'Ball, all the CIAU at the schools etc. Lots of festivals Blues, Tulip, Winterlude etc. No need to cross the river to the "Dark Side  Smile/happy/getting dizzy" just hit the market area.
There is a flight school at CYOW, I don't do much spotting but some oportunity for spotting VIP arrivals. Hope you enjoy yourself while your here..

I know of a couple of YOW a.netters, one of which has the username YOW of course! Cessnapimp, who lives in Toronto right now, is originally from YOW too. Overall, Ottawa is a fine city, with lots to do. It's close to Quebec for some partying, or close to the Ottawa Valley which is great for outdoor type sports, including white water rafting.

Go check out the museum at Rockliffe, and they do have some flight schools in the area. I think you'll have a great time!

By the way, yes it does get very cold there, but it will make you grow thicker skin.  Smile

"Which school O or C ?"

C, for aerospace engineering.

I was in Ottawa briefly earlier this year but didn't get to see much, but it did seem like a nice place, looking forward to exploring it further.

Good choice, I work with quite a few Carlton Grads, great aerospace program. They have some good internships with the NRC as well.

If you're 18, your social options are limited to the grungier crowd across the river in Hull. But if you're 19, you have more options in the Byward Market and on Elgin Street etc. downtown.

Make no mistake, Ottawa is a hellish place. Sure, about now, the weather is great and people can go outside and enjoy themselves. But come middle of October, the place transforms into a frigid hell where the sun sets at 4 and temperatures can - and do - drop to -40 degrees celsius with the wind. Last January, there were times when the Rideau River had tons of steam coming out of it because the water was actually warmer than the air outside. You've most likely been spoiled in Windsor.

My permanent residence is in Ottawa, and my dad is a prof at Carleton in mass comm, but I live in upstate NY most of the year for university.
