Mexican "La Academia"-Style Talent Shows Worldwide

Sun Aug 22, 2004 2:48 pm

I'm sure all Mexicans and perhaps many Latin Americans are familiar with the talent show "La Academia". I myself have never seen one before, but we have an exactly similar show here in Malaysia (AKADEMI FANTASIA), where at the moment I am suffering from a severe "withdrawal syndrom" after the final show last week  Sad I even went to the stadium to watch the live concert Big grin

I'm guessing our format here is exactly as the one in Mexico where 12 students are trained in a music "academy" with a concert + elimination at the end of every week. It's a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE phenomena in Malaysia, nowadays most of the students seem A WHOLE LOT more famous than even the most high-profile artistes around. I think why the show appeals a lot to the public is that the students are very eager to learn, and not simply crazy for fame. Plus, having a dedicated satellite TV channel solely to the show 24/7 certainly helped the show a lot. I guess it's a bit like Idol + Big Brother.

Our first season of MALAYSIAN IDOL (based exactly on UK/US versions) has just started. I sense that the Idol show can never match Akademi Fantasia as it seems to be lacking glamour. Also, I don't really agree on the concept that the Idol show is more keen on selecting a Malaysian representative to World Idol rather than what's best for the local music scene. Compared to Akademi, the contentants here look very desperate and seem to cry for "pick me!!!".

There's also the INDONESIAN version of the show, called Akademi Fantasi, shown on Indosiar TV. They are now in the 3rd season, one season ahead of what we have in Malaysia.

Then there is also the BRITISH version. But the concept seems to have been changed slightly.

Tell me about ACADEMIA versions in YOUR country!
How's the craze like at your end??? How does it compared to the "Idol" series???

The first show ever in this category was Spain's "Operación Triunfo", 1 year before "La Academia" started, so the original idea is Spanish.
Thank God, Operación Triunfo is over now in Spain after 3 or 4 years of a complete pain in the a$$. BTW, following Operación Triunfo's big success in Spain, many European countries started to produce their "domestic" versions of this program even much earlier than Mexico.

>The first show ever in this category was Spain's "Operación Triunfo", 1 year before "La Academia" started, so the original idea is Spanish.<

After the phenomenally succesful first year of "Operacion Triunfo" in Spain (I remember seeing the top 10 chart at the music department of El Corte Ingles in OVD, and NINE were Operacion Triunfo albums), Mexico's leading TV network bought the rights to make Operacion Triunfo here. However, their main competitor came up with their own version ("La Academia") which began airing some weeks before and became a hit, stealing all the thunder (and ratings) from the official Operacion Triunfo, which was the non-event of the year.

There's been a couple more seasons of "La Academia" since, but the "official" Mexican version of "Operacion Triunfo" died a quiet death, never to be heard from again. (There is a God, you see).

Even though "La Academia" was a hit, fortunately it was nowhere near the success of the spanish original, and we were spared our sanity. (OT's David Bisbal is quite succesful here, BTW).
