Viva Chile! Chile Went For Olympic Gold!

Sun Aug 22, 2004 7:21 pm

Yesterday evening / this morning Chile won it's first Olympic gold medal ever!
In a very frightening tennis double match Massu and Gonzalez won over the germans Kiefer and Schüttler 6:2, 4:6, 3:6, 7:6 (9:7 Tie break), 6:4.
I'm half chilean so I in no way way biased on who to cheer for. But in this case I went for Chile!
Viva Chile mierda!!! I'm proud of my second home country!

I saw the game until 2 AM in the morning. It was great tennis. Of course I was disappointed that the Germans lost.
The great thing is that one of the Chilean players had a single match which lasted more than 4 hours earlier in the day and then he played the doubles final which lasted as long. He showed no signs of fatigue.
Congrats to Chile!

Chi-Chi-le-le-le! Chi-Chi-le-le-le! Chi-Chi-le-le-le!

Massu completes Chileans olympic dream by winning the second gold medal within 24hours for a country that only got silver and bronce in all the olympic games before!
Nicolas Massu beats Mardy Fish in 5 sets! Congrats to both for excellent tennis and a beautiful match!
I guess tomorrow must be second National Holiday for Chile!!

Chile is in Carnaval!
After 3 wonderful medals (2 gold, 1 bronze), the wholw country is celebrating. Chile is the first country to win the double gold in men tennis.
For a country that always celebrates 2nd places, today is history!

Viva Chile!

It's always great to watch someone emerge from the pack and win for the first time.

Same when Greece won the European championship football. Well done to Chile and its medal winners, let's hope it is the first of many.  Big thumbs up

Have to give a lot of credit to Massu and Gonzalez. Over two long days of tennis, they played their hearts out, and just would not give up, no matter how much pain they were in. And now they have three medals between the two of them to show for it.

I'm from the US, and I was still rooting for Massu to beat Fish for the gold. No one could have matched their drive. Congrats!

Well done Massu and good to see some medals going to the underdogs.

Raising the flag is all good but keep your feet on the ground, the match was of an incredibly poor quality. Had it not been for the suspense (on Massu's part) or Chilean blood running in one's veins, it was boring.

Over two days? Massu and Gonzalez played 7 days 2 matches per day: singles and doubles. And the finals were both in 5 exhausting sets, and remember that yesterday, Gonzalez won the gold after more than 3 hours for the bronce, with an eternal 3rd set.
The germans actually could won the gold in the tie brake (6-2)...

At today's match, I really thought Massu would lose after loosing 2 sets.

Arcano,
I know that they played much more than 2 days; I was just referring to the last 3 matches, which were extremely intense (and in the case of the doubles, extremely late at night/early in the morning).

Iakobos,
You're pretty much right - the tennis was not of that great quality. Still, the sheer intensity and drive of the players made it worth it.
