Shoot that is the way I felt during the entire Clinton presidency.

Apparently the police are looking for three individuals, the two who grabbed the painting while holding off the patrons of the museum with pistols and the one that drove the get away car.

L-188,

Are you the poor guy on that picture then???  Big grin

Well I hope they get that picture back where it belongs. I wonder why people want to steal pictures like that. They don't get anything out of the "hard" work. They can't show it to anybody. So why bother stealing it.

This is a surprising story. Theft of paintings is not new. 2 Van Goghs were stolen in a burglary in Amsterdam a couple years ago, but I have never heard of armed robbery of a museum. Hopefully these paintings will be recovered in a city as relatively small as Oslo.

They have found the frames. Apparently the robbers accidently dropped it on the way. So the police and the art museum are afraid that the pictures has taken some damage. And the worst thing is the picture wasn't even insured.

Now this isn't even on canvas, it is on paper right......making it that much more fragile.

Exactly.
So I really hope it didn't take any damage. And if it has been damaged the robbers can't use the picture, and probably throw it away or destroy it totally.

I'm really surprised over the uproar. Someone probably has some empty space on their refrigerator. If they want, I can send them some of the stuff my son's kindergarten class has been pumping out lately.  Smile That is if they don't mind upstaging such a classic... LOL...

Why do I have the feeling that JeffM would fit nicely into a Nazi Stormtrooper uniform, complete with beer gut? Munch was considered as "entartete Kunst" (decadent art) by the Nazis.

I hope the paintings are returned undamaged, but Munch is overrated. If someone steals a Sargent, maybe.

Munch overrated? I know he isn't famous because of his technical ability, but that isn't what expressionism is about. He was very important in that movement and that is why his paintings are so significant. If somebody did steal a Sargent, do you think it would be such a huge story as this?

The "Scream" picture is worth more than 60mio USD! That is why it's so overrated  Smile
And Edvard Munch is a very famous painter all over the world. If you ask a Da Vinci wannabe I can guarantee you tha he knows him Big grin

You realize the only reason it is worth that much is because Munch is dead

L-188,

Munch is dead????? I didn't know. When did that happen  Big grin
No I knew he was dead. I just find it amazing that a piece of art can be that expensive. If the "Scream" is worth that much, I don't even want to know how much Mona Lisa is worth.

It can't be easy to sell something as famous as Scream now can it? I mean sure, the thieves can try and sell it on the black market to an anonymous buyer. But what is Mr Anonymous Buyer going to do with it once he's paid millions for it? Hang it in a secret room in the basement or something? It can't really be displayed. And what's the point of having a painting like this if people don't know you have it?

Exactly, that is why the museum officials are waiting for a ransom demmand.

Unless they are planning on keeping it themselves, think of this as a kidnapping rather then a robbery.

might i direct you to a fun movie, The Thomas Crowne Affair, the more recent one starring Pierce Brosnan, for an answer to your questions.

Yeah, but everybody already knew that is was Crown's painting. Wasn't it supposed to have been on loan to the museum?

I think owning paintings such as these is similar to owning, for example, a Maybach. You don't really need it. You know you can afford it. But you need the world to know that you have it. It's more for effect.

What about Scream? Was it also on loan, or was it owned by the museum?

It's only a matter of time before someone jokingly offers it up on eBay.  Big grin

I don't think we have to worry too much as there are 4 "Screams". Why he made 4 of the same painting I don't know. I haven't checked but there is still a copy in the National Gallery in Oslo I think. So one gets stolen, so what, we can admire the other three which are all original. It will put the value of the remaining 3 up!

I like that painting!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.
