Who Will The GOP Run In 2008?

Sun Aug 29, 2004 9:47 pm

Regardless of who wins this Nov's electlon , who is the GOP going to run in 2008? We know it won't be Cheney. I'm not sure their is anyone who is in the forefront.

Interesting question.

Figure that with Bush's reelection, the democrats are going to run Hillary.

Maybe McCain might make another run for it.

I'm hoping that in 2008 when I get to vote in my first presidential election that Rudy Guiliani is running for president and Governor George Pataki is his running mate.

How about Guilani for President, and Colin Powell for VP?

though I think he would make a great POTUS or VPOTUS I don't see Powell running I think that the last 4 years have really turned him off to National politics.

I have to agree on Powell, I don't think he wants the job.

That being said, he would be a strong canidate.

Could you imagine a Powell/Rice republican ticket in 08

I've long held that if Hillary is on the ticket, the GOP will HAVE to run a woman in the POTUS or VPOTUS slot. If the GOP runs two mem against Hillary, they're gonners - though I'm not sure Hillary can win the nomination.

Remember the "invading her space" outcry after the Senatorial debates.

Let's just hope for a credible Republican candidate, because that's what the US needs.

Kerry for 2004, and a credible Republican for 2008.

Is there a big difference between Guilani and McCain? Don't know much about these two guys... Any other possible candidates?

I'm on board the Mitt Romney 2008 train...I like him as a candidate, and he's been raising his exposure nationally a lot this past year.

I wouldn't mind seeing Guiliani though...

I think the GOP's best choice would be John McCain. I'm a Democrat and I would even give voting for him a second thought.  Big grin

though I'm not sure Hillary can win the nomination.

In many Dem's eyes, she won it this year. She will win the nomination, if she runs, with little or no difficulty whatsoever, unfortunately.

Guiliani is way too progressive for the GOP, I can't see the conservative base of the party supporting him.

Powell is burned out, big time.

Romney...hmmm, possibly!

I think McCain might be too old by then, not sure.

Laura Bush vs. Hillary Clinton....there you go! Laura would win overwhelmingly. Either way you have that, George W. Bush or Bill Clinton would be back in the White House. Ok...maybe not such a good idea anymore.  Insane

I'd bet on Rudy Giuliani, but other possibilities include Condoleezza Rice, John McCain, former MT Gov. and RNC Chariman Marc Racicot, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, MA Gov. Mitt Romney, NY Gov. George Pataki, or CA Gov. Ahhnold Schwarzenegger (Constitutional Amendment notwithstanding).

I wish Bush would have dumped Cheney for one of the above. Cheney brings nothing to the ticket, is loaded with political baggage, and will leave a vacuum in 2008. It's too late now, though.

Let's not forget Alan Keyes (sp?) the black republican running for Senate in IL. Perhaps part of the incentive package to get him to run against Obama (in what is almost certain to be a loosing effort) was to give him a chance at the VP slot in 2008. A little color on the GOP ticket would be very attractive from an electoral stand point.

If the democrats don't carry 90%+ percent of the black vote, it opens up a lot of traditionally democratic states for GOP contention.

I would hope it's Rudy Giuliani.

I like this guy a lot, he seems to be very intelligent, he works hard, he likes to get things done and not just talk about them, and he's an overall stand-up guy.

About Hilary,

I can't believe such a stupid bitch would have the possibility of winning, it makes me sick and very disappointed with some of my fellow Americans who would even consider voting for a person like her.

I would rather Kerry win this election and be president for 8 years than to think of Hilary in 4. That makes me feel sick.

Haha, what is that supposed to mean Gigneil? Every educated person must like Hilary?

With this ignorant statement of yours along with others that you've said recently (like "In recent months, Bush has not held a single poll over Kerry"), YOU are the one who seems to be lacking education my friend.

Jeb has said he will not run in 2008. He doesn't want the job.

I find it interesting how many conservatives want a RINO like Rudy, Romney, or Pataki. I'd rather see them run for the Senate and knock out people like Kerry, Kennedy, Hillary, or Chucky.

One name that has come out more than once is the current governor of Colorado, Bill Owens.

I heard a radio interview with Jeb yesterday saying that he's got no interest in national politics. In the interview he said that he wasn't going to the RNC because there was disaster work to be done back in FL.

I'll bet anyone that Jeb isn't on the GOP ticket in '08

Some of the recent press I read mentioned Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee as the GOP's choice for a possible 2008 run. However, the same article mentioned that his lackluster (could you possible say uninspiring) leadership in the Senate has tarnished his image in the minds of the movers and shakers in the GOP, thus leaving the party without an heir apparent for 2008. And let us not forget that the last Senator to go from the Senate directly to the White House was John F. Kennedy. That doesn't bode well for Frist (or Kerry for that matter) if history is any kind of indicator.

David Duke - wasn't he in the KKK ?

Mind you, for the Republican Party these days, that's practically a Must Have.

Just my 2c, but I respect John McCain very much - he'd be a good Prez.

I would also like to see McCain or Rudy run for president in 2008.

Rudy really impressed me after 9/11. He did a hell off a good job there.
And I actually wanted McCain to win the republican vote 4 years ago. So he is still my favourite.

Careful, you're making the classic Hannity mistake of perpetually equating Republicans/Conservatives...

How about the ivory and ebony team of David Duke and Alan Keyes. Both have impeccable conservative credentials.

Is that why the former's in-state platform is shifted to support liberal Democratic candidates... as well as supposition that he himself plans to become one?

Those who denounce moderate Republicans as RINO's obviously don't know very much about national politics.

After Bush leaves office, whether it's in 2005 or 2009, there is going to be a civil war in the GOP. The party will have to decide whether to keep moving to the right and begin to lose ground on the national stage, or to remain in the center, not unlike the choice the Democratic Party faced in 1992.

Just look at the governors of California, Massachusetts, and New York. All the rising GOP stars are moderates. I believe and hope that that's the direction we will take in the future.

As for who the GOP will run in 2008, I'd bet money on Rudy Giuliani. Perhaps Kay Bailey Hutchison as his running mate.

Bill Fist of Tennessee might be the GOP candidate in 2008. He is ultra conservative but can dress up and pretend to be a moderate on TV.

Mr. Fister will certainly be the darling of the religious right.
