What Kind Of Camera Do You Have?

Wed Sep 01, 2004 7:41 am

I'm playing with the idea of getting a digital SLR camera. What's something good for a newbie? What reasons do you have for recommending a certain brand? What do you currently own?

I have a Nikon D70. It was my first camera and I started taking pics in April.

Canon Powershot S45

Not a real spotting camera (not a lot of zoom), but it takes decent enough shots.

Minolta SR-1 always loaded with black & white
Minolta SRT-101 always loaded with color
Speed Graphic 4x5
Sony F-707

The Sony, at 5.3 megapixel should be a great camera. I do have pictures up on this site that were taken with it, but unless they were taken in full, bright sunlight directly on the subject they take a lot of post-production work in photoshop. If the light was less than full sunlight I don't even bother to post the pictures here because they will be rejected. It does not handle low light well at all.

It would be a nice family camera though.

The old 35mm pictures have far more information in them than the images gathered by the didgital.

The 4x4 produces wonderful images but it is an hour or so of work to set it up and take a picture. Also I don't have my own darkroom anymore so I don't even know where I'd get the negatives developed.

I just bought a Fuji Finepix A205... it was on closeout for $89.99 at Sears. It was a deal I could not pass up.

While I think DSLRs are cool and all... for your first semi-serious camera one of those $1000 DSLRs frankly might be too much camera. I learned to shoot on an old fully manual SLR. The thing was old, weighed a ton, had a screw mount for the lens, did not have a hot shoe, but did have a TTL light meter. In junior high I took a full year of photography and did a lot of shooting with that camera, developed my own film (mostly TMAX 100 and 400, I prefered TMAX 100), and made my own prints. It was a lot of fun and I learned a ton. I wonder if I can still reel a roll of film without burning it.

Now if you want to learn the fundamentals of photography get something super basic like a Pentax K1000... should be able to find a body and lens (50mm) combo for under $200 these days.

DSLRs are still cool and everything, but there is a certain quality and richness that you get from good quality film photographs that a digital image does not get.

Nikon 4500.

I also had a 2x lens converter, but it is currently flying around the NWA system in a DC-9, N773NC to be exact. First time I have ever lost anything in my life.  Sad

Olympus C-750UZ.

If you want to buy a digital SLR, get a Canon EOS 300D. It's been around for a year or so, so the prices settled down a bit and you can hardly go wrong with Canon. Nice thing about the 300D is, that lenses are compatible with the "classic" 35mm EOS 300.
