Preempt Political Discussion Threads Here!

Mon Sep 06, 2004 4:26 pm

Ok folks, this might be my best idea yet. That's not saying much, but still...

For those who think there are enough discussions about the US elections, this is the thread where you should post any and all articles, links, etc. dealing with things that might be posted as new threads in the forum. Please also attach a short quote from the article or summary of the article.

Now for the real genius part. Technically, if you, the observant and concerned member, post a link and summary of the article here, it cannot be discussed as part of another thread. Rule #18 clearly states:

Always check past topics to be sure that the topic you are about to start hasn't already been posted.

Since the moderators are not enforcing the 'topic discussed to death' deletion reason in the suggest deletion box or they feel that the election discussions have NOT been discussed to death, this is a legitimate alternative. When you suggest deletion of a new thread, please link to this thread with the appropriate reply # so the moderators can clearly see that the topic has already been posted.

Of course, this idea could backfire if the moderators don't enforce Rule #18. It could inadvertently turn into a gold mine for the political thread starters, but it's a chance worth taking.

I'll start:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040906/ap_on_el_pr/bush_national_guard&cid=694&ncid=716

Documents that should have been written to explain gaps in President Bush's Texas Air National Guard service are missing from the military records released about his service in 1972 and 1973, according to regulations and outside experts.

For example, Air National Guard regulations at the time required commanders to write an investigative report for the Air Force when Bush missed his annual medical exam in 1972. The regulations also required commanders to confirm in writing that Bush received counseling after missing five months of drills.

Wellhung......when it gets down to us trying to post political topics under one thread it is time for Johan to Step Up To The PLATE and either allow us a open door within forum guidelines or get rid of any topic involving anything of a political nature.

People are still going to Bit_h.

No one is trying to end all political discussion or confine all discussion to one thread. Certainly with your direct feed from the Kerry camp you'll be able to get some threads up before the topic is posted in this one. However, this is a legitimate tool for those who want to cut down on the number of such threads, especially those dealing with the US election. If those who post and participate in all the election-related threads tell those who don't like them not to read them, certainly they should have no problem following the rules of the forum. No one is forcing anyone to post links and articles in this thread.

Clinton and Kerry spoke for 90 minutes, according to the New York Times, and the former president told Kerry to move away from talking about his Vietnam war record and instead attack Bush on job creation and health care.

I apologize for behind the ball today. Seeems the serial posters have been quick on the trigger. Needless to say, it's because they know we (me) are on to them.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040907/ap_on_el_pr/cheney

DES MOINES, Iowa - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said Tuesday that the nation faces the threat of another terrorist attack if voters make the "wrong choice" on Election Day, suggesting that Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) would follow a pre-Sept. 11 policy of reacting defensively.

The Kerry-Edwards campaign immediately rejected those comments as "scare tactics" that crossed the line.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=5&u=/ap/20040908/ap_on_go_co/budget_deficit

WASHINGTON - The federal deficit will swell to a record $422 billion this election year but fall short of even more dire forecasts, Congress' top budget analysts projected Tuesday in a report that became instant fodder for both political parties.

Doing my part:  Smile

First off, in the "No Sh*t, Sherlock, tell us something we don't know" category, we have:

http://start.earthlink.net/newsarticle?cat=6&aid=D84V72P00_story

WASHINGTON - Terrorists still hope to disrupt the U.S. democratic process even though the presidential nominating conventions and other high-profile gatherings this summer went off without incident, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Tuesday.

Threat reporting over the last several months has been "consistent, general and credible" and indicated the al-Qaida network is trying to push ahead with its plans, Ridge said.

Second, in the "If I hear one more thing about this I'm going to vomit" category, introducing (and pre-empting):

http://start.earthlink.net/newsarticle?cat=0&aid=907084551_5301_lead_story

WASHINGTON - President Bush ranked in the middle of his Air National Guard flight class and flew 336 hours in a fighter jet before letting his pilot status lapse and missing a key readiness drill in 1972, according to his flight records belatedly uncovered Tuesday under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Pentagon and Bush's campaign have claimed for months that all records detailing his fighter pilot career have been made public, but defense officials said they found two dozen new records detailing his training and flight logs after The Associated Press filed a lawsuit and submitted new requests under the public records law.

With these two topics sucessfully removed from discussion, it is hopeful that we will have a more enjoyable forum. Big grin

Cheers,

-Mir

Well done Mir. The forum thanks you. I found a few more...

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - If you're a candidate facing the husband of the heir to the Heinz fortune, ketchup isn't the condiment of choice for hamburger — at least not in public.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=512&ncid=703&e=8&u=/ap/20040908/ap_on_go_co/graham_saudis

WASHINGTON - Former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham accused the White House on Tuesday of covering up evidence that might have linked Saudi Arabia to the Sept. 11 hijackers.

It hurts me to preempt this, but I think it's for the general good.

From the "I can't believe how hilariously f-ed up our democratic system has become" category: The Texans for Truth campaign.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-09-07-texas-ad_x.htm

A group called Texans for Truth will release a TV ad today in which a former lieutenant colonel in the Alabama Air National Guard says neither he nor his friends saw George W. Bush when the future president was supposed to be with their unit in 1972.

I personally find this hilarious (if anyone seriously envisioned a "Texans for Truth" ad campaign for the democratic candidate back when the campaign started, you would probably have been dubbed a nutcase), but I have the eerie feeling that it would turn into a flamewar. So, it is placed here.

I bet Bush doesn't know Heinz makes mustard, too.  Insane

Anyway - that last one is a great pre-emption. Hilarious story, too. It will surely put the moderators to the test because I have no doubt it will be posted as a new thread shortly, not to mention the subsequent threads trying to discredit the members of the group or link them to the Kerry campaign. Let's see if they'll enforce the rule.  Smile

Now this I have no qualms about pre-empting, and pre-empting right away.

From the "Why do we even bother trying to have a civilized debate on this topic" category:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=721&e=1&u=/nm/20040908/wl_nm/mideast_dc

Israeli tanks and helicopters swept into the northern Gaza Strip (news - web sites) early on Wednesday, a day after soldiers killed 14 Hamas militants in the biggest ever raid of its kind.

At least 20 tanks and armored personnel carriers rolled toward Beit Lahiya and Jebalya refugee camp in what an Israeli military source called an operation to stop militants from firing home-made rockets at neighboring Israeli towns.

There were no reported injuries in Wednesday's incursion, part of a growing spiral of tension that could complicate Israel's plan to evacuate troops and settlers from Gaza by the end of 2005.

Palestinian militants are determined to claim any Israeli pullout as a victory, but Israel has vowed to smash them first.

Glad to stop that one dead before it got too far.

BOSTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) fell short of meeting his military obligations during the Vietnam War and was not disciplined despite irregular attendance at required training drills, The Boston Globe said on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A key group of gay Republicans said it had withdrawn support from US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) in November's election and vowed instead to work to defeat the party's "radical right."

The Log Cabin Republicans (news - web sites), the party's largest gay and lesbian bloc, which backed Bush's 2000 election, said it was withholding its endorsement this year, accusing Bush of allowing anti-gay right-wingers of "hijacking" the party and marginalizing gay members.

WASHINGTON - Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) sought to link the Iraq (news - web sites) war to U.S. economic woes on Wednesday, calling President Bush (news - web sites)'s move against Baghdad a "catastrophic choice" that so far has drained $200 billion in needed resources at home. Democrats also raised fresh questions about Bush's Vietnam-era Air National Guard service.

WASHINGTON - A Wisconsin anti-abortion group asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to let it run ads this fall despite a campaign finance law's restrictions on election-time political commercials.

A three-judge panel ruled last month that the law barred Wisconsin Right to Life from running ads that mention Sen. Russell Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat who is up for re-election. Feingold is also a co-author of the campaign law.

WASHINGTON - With the number of American military deaths in Iraq (news - web sites) surpassing 1,000, President Bush (news - web sites) said Wednesday "we mourn every loss of life" and declared that the United States was making good progress in the war against terrorism.

"We're still at war," Bush said during a meeting with congressional leaders. "We've got to do everything we can to protect the homeland."

Again, from the "Why do we even bother trying to have a civilized debate on this topic" category (aka Israel):

I have confirmation that this thread is indeed working, so our efforts are not in vain.

WASHINGTON - A television writer and fund-raiser for John Kerry (news - web sites) is the first six-figure donor to a new group that is criticizing President Bush (news - web sites)'s National Guard service during the Vietnam War.

Daniel O'Keefe, a writer/producer whose work includes such sitcoms as "The Drew Carey Show" and "Seinfeld," donated $100,000 this week to Texans for Truth, an Austin-based group that plans to run anti-Bush television ads starting Monday.

Journalists requesting credentials for the presidential debate scheduled for Oct. 8 at Washington University are being asked to disclose their race on the media application.

The question surprised several local editors and news directors, eliciting prickly responses from some and recalling for others a flare-up over the race of an Arizona photographer scheduled to cover a visit by the vice president.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) warned black Americans on Thursday to beware of George W. Bush's overtures and called the Republican president a false prophet who "traffics in the politics of division."

NEW ORLEANS - Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) accused President Bush (news - web sites) on Thursday of failing the Biblical test set by the Good Samaritan, saying, "He's seen people in need, but he's crossed over to the other side of the street."

CINCINNATI - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) on Thursday defended the U.S. invasion of Iraq (news - web sites), saying Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) harbored al-Qaida and other terrorists and again connecting the war to the Sept. 11 attacks.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=676&e=7&u=/usatoday/20040909/ts_usatoday/reportspaniraqreconstruction

Detailed new reports by two independent groups offer a devastating portrait of the 16-month-old U.S. reconstruction effort in Iraq (news - web sites), blaming ongoing violence there in large part on misplaced U.S. priorities, bureaucratic bungling and poor planning.

The reports come as the State Department and John Negroponte, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, are making plans to reprioritize projects and accelerate spending in a bid to create tens of thousands of new jobs for Iraqis.

The rebuilding campaign's failure to employ more Iraqis has fed guerrilla insurgencies, sparked rampant crime and led to "entrenched frustration and anger" at the U.S.-led occupation, says the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. CSIS includes a number of former diplomats and Capitol Hill workers in Republican and Democratic administrations.
