Assault Weapons Ban To Expire

Mon Sep 13, 2004 7:30 am

Starting Monday, the ban on assault weapons expires. Even though over 2/3 of the American public want the ban renewed, Congress did not even vote on whether to extend it or not. Great, crime is bad enough with handguns on the street, let alone having criminals hit up 7/11's with AK-47's....

Yeah....someone who won't think of twice about plugging some poor clerk at 7-11 while stealing $47 that is in the drawer and then leading the cops on a two hour, 117 mph chase down residential streets is now going to say "well geez....assault weapons are illegal...I guess I need to make an honest living now."

The AWB was a joke. It didn't outlaw automatic weapons (which are regulated under many federal laws some dating back to the 1930's) like the media likes to claim. It was simply a piece of feel good legislation. Guns were banned based on appearence and because they looked "mean". Only very minor changes were required to allow the guns to continue to be sold.

And criminals have weapons because they purchase them legally? Yeah right, criminals will always be able to get the weapons they want, all AWB did was make it harder to legal citizens to own these semi-automatic "assault" weapons.

And congress doesn't want to touch this with a ten foot pole because many of the folks who voted for it were voted out in part because of NRA pressure.

In about four hours, we will experience something that rarely happens, the American public will gain back something that was wrongfully taken from them, precious freedom.

So my feelings on the sunset are I assume pretty well known here.

FREEDOM!!!!

Yeah, criminals don't get their guns legally, so let's make more available for them to get illegally. Especially high-powered rifles they can fold up and put in their pocket.

L-188, you said yourself that the ban did nothing. Now you're acting like it's the emanciption of slaves. So you're getting back a freedom that was never taken away? You're not that dumb, are you?

Clintons gun bill was useless.

Since then there has been absolutley no change in the amount of crime in this country. And for the most part, how does the barrel length, collapsable stock, or muzzel break make a gun a "assult weapon". If I attacked you with a rusty pitchfork, wouldn't that be considered an assault weapon??

The ban took rights away from honest citizens. I have to go through all the hoopla to buy a new rifle, but some thug homeboy can buy an automatic uzi on the black market. Why not go after him???

If the law does nothing, why have it on the book.

Particuarly if it restricts individual liberty?

And yes it did affect people, it just never worked for it's intended purpose.

You guys are kidding me right? This ban was the biggest joke ever. Mothers look at this and go "I am so happy my children are safer" just because that's what the title of it is. It doesn't do squat. WellHung; the guns that are out there now being sold illegally are sufficent enough to supply anyone who wants one. The ban won't change any of that. The dems will sugar-coat this as a monstrosity of wrong-doing on the part of the Bush-administration as they do with every other thing they can find.

Where thus the need for these kind of weapons come from in every day live??
Always reminds me on that scene with Eddy Murphy in that film where he gets elected and goes to congress.
He goes hunting ducks with this Weapons manufacturer with M16's and fire ton's of ammo,... only 1 duck comes down and Murphy says

What a stupid piece of legislation to begin with... and it is a hideous claim to suggest that two-thirds of the American public wishes the ban was reinstated. But perhaps you meant to say one-third, and in that case I do agree with you that that same third has a low level of intelligence.

The assault weapons ban. What makes a weapon and assault weapon. Its looks? The ban was pointless and harmful. It did nothing to prevent arms merchants from bringing in weapons to be sold on the streets, and kept law abiding citizens from exercising their rights.

wellhung (if you say so)

The concept of a rifle you can fold up and put into your pocket is the kind of hysteria that liberal gun haters pass around to try and scare folks into giving up their rights. The minimum length for a rifle barrel under permanent law prevents any rifle from being legally sold that would fit into a pocket. If you are looking for something to ban, then go after the double barrel shotguns, because they can be so modified. Problem is there are millions out there to find. If you really want to ban a deadly weapon that fits into your pocket why don't you take the keys away and prevent kids under the age of 18 from driving? Thousands of deaths per year more than are currently killed by people with guns will be prevented if we keep kids off the roads in the deadliest weapon ever invented. The automobile.

No, the problem in this country is that all the liberal lawers get there clinets out of doing hard time after commiting a violent act with a gun. In my book.. Do the crime-Do the time. If you use a gun in the use of a crime, no matter how small or petty.... 10 years Minimum. If you shoot that gun and even miss.... 40 to life due to intent to inflict harm. If they die...... see you in hell.

Just in time for Kerry.... LOL...

"The clamor over the Democratic presidential candidate, who took possession of a Browning semiautomatic shotgun outside his home state, reflects a problem with the laws and should not be used to arrest and prosecute the man." According to gun-law expert Alan Korwin.

1. Taking ownership of the shotgun gift, if he doesn't already have a valid Massachusetts Firearm Identification Card, could subject him to a two-and-a-half-year prison term in his home state. Since he has claimed publicly he owns firearms, chances are he has this critical piece of paper, Korwin says.

2. Bringing the firearm back to Massachusetts, if he received it from a private party, would be a federal felony under the 1968 Gun Control Act (five years in prison, $5,000 fine, 18 USC §922).

3. The only exemption that would allow him to bring it into his home state requires that he obtained it in a face-to-face transaction with a federal firearms licensed dealer (FFL). A private gift would not qualify.

4. If Kerry did get it from an FFL, he would have had to personally fill out and sign a 4473 form, required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), before the gift was given, under penalty of federal felony.

5. If Kerry did not personally undergo a "NICS" instant background check before the transfer from an FFL, he would have put the person conducting the transfer in some legal jeopardy, though the law contains a loophole that probably would save Kerry from additional harm (the dealer, not the recipient, suffers from failure to do the NICS check).

While gun lobbyists are inflamed that Kerry introduced a law that would outlaw this particular type of sporting shotgun and gun gifts in general, it is a good thing the law has not passed yet, because then it might be too serious a problem to simply ignore.

I'm getting increasingly fed up with people here arguing about stuff thezy obviously don't know what they are talking about.
Here are the facts again:

The AWB bans only certain cosmetic features on semi automatic rifles introduced AFTER 1994 with detachable magazines:
-flash hiders (though muzzle brakes are permitted)
-grenade launching attchments (where can you legaly get a rifle grenade?)
-pistol grips
-forward grips (to prevent the rifle shot from the hip)
-folding stocks (the barrel must still be longer than 16 1/2 inches, else the weapon falls under "short barreled rifle" or "short barreled shotgun", both regulated by the 1931 National Firearms Act, you always need a permit from the BATF for them, so they are not easily hidable under a coat)
-Bayonet lugs (when was the last hold up at bayonett point or drive by bayonetting?)
-large capacity magazines (arguably the only point with some reason)

Imported non-sporting (not solely intended for target shooting or hunting) must not have more than 10 foreign made parts.

BATF stands for Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, a federal agency.

The 1931 NFA also controls fully automatic weapons (machine guns) and silencers, as well as unusual looking guns (cane guns, pen guns) and destructive devices (grenades, cannon, mortars, RPGs, flame throwers).
For all of them you need a federal licence, the punishment for illegal possession of a machine gun in the US is 10 years federal jail and $100.000 fine.
Also the BATF can check your house at any time.

Kill a mockingbird? Why shoot Florida's state bird? They sound cool and it's hard to tell what song they are mimicking. Seriously, why not ban automobiles...'they' kill 50,000+ people/year here in the U.S.? Why not ban airplanes...'they' killed 3,000+ people in a few minutes back on 9/11? Why not ban cigarettes? Why not ban alcohol? Why not ban porn? Why not ban KFC or McDonald's? Or, would anybody consider banning stupid, ignorant or 'bad' people? Now, there's an idea. Of course, it's not politically correct. Regards...Jack

BWAHAHAA!
What a terrific intellectual argument.  Wink/being sarcastic

I'm not gleeful, in fact, I'm rather indifferent as I'm not planning on buying any weapon that I couldn't before. But it's a rare feat indeed in America that we actually get a reversal of infringed-upon liberties.

All you anti-gun nuts are barking up the wrong tree. You're on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of facts. The next time there's a shooting, why don't you find out how that criminal got that gun, find out when they last got out of jail and why, and look into the sentencing standards. There are a million REAL reasons why we have crime. The fact that a tool exists to commit crime is a red herring.

This whole gun thing is so ridiculous. The only reason why we have a "right" to own a gun in this country is so that we could assemble a "militia" to protect ourselves when the "redcoats" or whatever enemies come attacking us down the street. So, I guess I'll be wishing I had gun the next time that happens.

That being said, since it's a right, I think that owning a gun is a private matter. Now why anyone needs something that only a soldier would need in combat is another story. Why shouldn't we all have James Bond cars that have missiles on them and throw grenades, especially with threat of terrorism now?

Speaking of terrorism...I wonder how long it will take them to get some heavy firepower and wipeout a bunch of people in America until someone wakes up and realizes that people don't need guns.

Slider,

My comment wasn't meant to be "intellectual." As the father of a young child I am simply immensely dismayed by this action (on inaction) as it further endangers my son's well-being and therefore freedom to live without fear.

This is a sad society. Truly sad.

Luv, I'm with you. It won't take much for terrorists to use these useless guns to mow down dozens of people.

To those who can't wait to upgrade their ammo, I ask -- what possible need is there to have an AK-47? To hunt rabbit?

They would get their weapons the same way that drugs enter the country, through our many miles of borders. Heck for their purposes the weapons that they like to use are still banned under 1930's automatic weapon bans.

Also in concealed weapon states there is a greater chance that an armed American may attempt to stop them.

I love this LWAK attitude of "the government knows what is best for you, so hand over your guns, to hell with freedom"

Why the hell are you all so in love with a band-aid solution to a sucking chest wound of a problem? It has been said in this thread a million times, there are some very real reasons people are getting shot in the US, and it's not the guns.

"Those of you who are gleeful about this make me sick.

You clearly don't care about the health and welfare of this country."

Close, I DO care about the welfare of the country. I DON'T care about the welfare of 99% of the assholes in it.

Yeah, you´re probably right that I´m harsh on this matter.......

-"He´s got a bigger gun than me,so I want a bigger one". IOW the police is outgunned by the thugs. That´s what it sounds to me!

Am I wrong or right? Whats you´re thoughts?

Cheers
