EU's Hypocrisy Over The West Bank Security Fence

Mon Sep 13, 2004 9:03 am

The European Union's intransigence

ILEANA ROS-LEHTINEN, THE JERUSALEM POST

After European representatives launched a campaign against Israel's separation fence and voted against Israel at the United Nations General Assembly last month, the European Union recently announced that it is planning a separation fence of its own.

The EU plans to build a fence to separate its new members, Poland and Hungary, from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to prevent the free movement of migrants seeking to enter the EU.

The hypocrisy of the European Union is astounding. Israel's use of its security fence is far more principled than that of the EU; Israel is using its fence to save lives, not to protect it from economic competition.

Nonetheless, the EU, both in domestic and international forums, continues to criticize every approach used by Israel to protect its citizens.

Wait wait wait,

http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,2763,1013115,00.html

The US critisised the Israeli fence too, yet has its own fences on the border with Mexico. I hope you also agree that this is hypocrisy?

Pretty lame attempt..

Borders are usually equipped with fences. I think you'll find that a fence between Israel and Palestine would be widely accepted if they were two separate nations.

Well done Tbar, and congrats to the Jerusalem post as well.
The education of the masses through the media in some countries is proving to be very successful.

Micke,

You can forget about the civil war. Of course there will be settlers that will have to be evacuated by using force. I think I'll volunteer for that  Smile

Tbar,
The comparison would have been valid if the fence ws built on 1967 line. (Which will hopefully be achieved in a few years)

There would've been far less opposition to that Israeli fence/wall had it been built along the border and not on Palestinian ground... but it's so comforting to forget about that, isn't it?  Yeah sure
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

I was actually going for that.  Nuts

Andreas: And what the hell are you doing in front of your PC at 5 in the morning...

Being self-employed and doing project work can be a curse as surely as it is a blessing. You do indeed have the advantage (and the disadvantage) of regular office hours as a cubicle-dwelling drone... Big grin

Klaus,

Yep, we´re all just evil and we´re all after you.

You know you could be a little more mature and actually post something constructive to the thread instead of putting words into my mouth. Showing real class though, I must say  Yeah sure

And by the way for everybody, I've never posted this before. In fact, I wasn't even posting on this website all summer, so lighten up.

LY7E7,

People aren't saying that the fence's location is illegal, they are saying that the fence itself is illegal. Considering that it is being built to protect Israel and to save lives, this is hypocritical. I understand it should be built on the 1967 borders, buts that's not what this article is discussing.

The EU plans to build a fence to separate its new members, Poland and Hungary, from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine to prevent the free movement of migrants seeking to enter the EU.

Putting things in context:
to actually fence the countries' borders, which until now (for the most part) do not exist (no man's land patrolled occasionally by border guards)
to prevent unchecked movement of people and goods (and traficking)

Where is the analogy with the Israeli wall ?

As a response to a whining look-they´re-*sniff*-all-against-us-again-*sniff*-for-no-reason! post? Sometimes it´s just too much to ask.  Wink/being sarcastic

Tbar220: And by the way for everybody, I've never posted this before. In fact, I wasn't even posting on this website all summer, so lighten up.

It´s simply the usual. Are you posting anything else at all?

Tbar220: People aren't saying that the fence's location is illegal, they are saying that the fence itself is illegal.

Incorrect. The recent ICJ verdict was solely concerned with the fence´s location and found that it was in fact illegal in several places.

Separately from that, most people are of the opinion that the fence is a mistake.

Regarding your initial post, a comparison to the EU could only be applicable if the EU occupied the neighbouring countries and conducted military attacks on them while suffering from terrorist attacks from the other side, which is not the case as far as I´m aware.

Recognizing these distinctions would have helped making your post more relevant as far as I´m concerned...

ILEANA ROS-LEHTINEN is a hack of a congress person who's been re-elected time after time on nothing but her fanatical support of the trade embargo with Cuba. If she wants to point out hypocrisy, she has to look no further than her own voting record on this.

She sits on the house foreign affairs committee yet knows absolutely nothing about international trade and foreign policy.

She's a one issue wonder who gets re-elected solely be ensuring that her district is a gerrymandered as possible to include as many Cuba "exiles" as possible. She's creates such a large campaign war chest that most of the time she runs unopposed.

Apparently those people do not suffer from blood hungry palestinian terrorists.

The irony about the EU fence is that it will be probably built by an Israeli contractor (the same one who built it here)...

Out of curiosity - does anyone have any type of independant confirmation that Europe is actually considering building a fence? Because I have not found any reference to it on news sites, neither here in Germany, nor in Europe, nor in the US.

Frank

I have also tried to do a search. I didn't find anything that even confirms this wall. And I'm sure it won't happen either. Because if it does I will move out of EU right away.

There was a serie on and by Belgian tv a couple of months ago, pinpointing outstanding issues in each of the 10 new EU members.
In the part related to Poland, the "transparency" of the border with Belarus was highlighted, the reporter even accompanied a patrol at night, and obviously it is a huge no man's land with not even a wire or a signpost to indicate that it is a border.
Another argument is that Polish border guard is very poorly equipped and grossly understaffed, and that there is nothing current and future in the state budget that might improve this.
Though they did not refer to a wall but to a fence (with electronic detection).
