Puget Sound Convergence Zone Is At It Again

Tue Sep 14, 2004 2:14 pm

It is POURING at my house while it is not raining at all ten miles north or ten miles south of me.

The Puget Sound convergence zone is responsible for this, and is a strange thing. I have never seen anything like this anywhere else.

One of the joys of living in Seattle. Stevenuhl777, are you getting dumped on tonight too?

That's a very interesting small scale weather phenomena. I knew it rained a lot up there, but now I know one of the reasons why! Good post.

Dry as a clam in Renton Scarlet. Too bad for you. I'm sure it will be here by morning.

I lived in Seattle for many years, and am well familiar with the convergence zone. About the oddest thing I saw one day was everything was dry in the downtown area, drove north on I-5 across the bridge over the Ship Canal, it was snowing and there was 2-3 inches on the ground. Drove back across towards downtown later, still dry on the south side of the canal. The canal was the division point for two completely different types of weather. Wierd!!
Those who want to do something will find a way; those who don't will find an excuse.

Today we have just plain RAIN. I guess the rainy season has started a bit early this year.

AzoresLover, how strange! For some reason the area I live in gets more snow than the surrounding area. Lower elevations, I could understand them getting less snow. But one of my ex-coworkers lived farther out in the mountains and she said there was always the most snow at my intersection!

For the record, it's pouring in Marysville at 6:12pm.

We had some of the heaviest rain I've ever seen in Woodinville at about 8:30 last night, and again at 10:30, both with thunder and lightning. Now it's raining lightly. We're right under the convergence zone and usually get several inches more snow than Redmond or Bellevue.

As of 7:15pm, nothing. Had a brief shower an hour ago, and had quite a downpour late last night.

The convergence zone, for those not in the know, is unique micro-climate that usually forms north of Seattle, starting just north of the Northgate area, and going up past Everett. We've had huge snowfall whereas downtown Seattle gets nothing, surprise windstorms, heavy rain, etc.. Pretty unusual. In the summer, it's a little cooler on this end of town, where as downtown can be warmer.
