"With Argentina's 2nd Place in the Copa America, Olympic Gold in Athens, leading with Brazil the Qualifyers, and 4th place in the FIFA rankings, Marcelo Bielsa, dubbed 'el loco' (now we all know why), will resign this evening effective immediately, surprising everyone including AFA & FIFA..."
Well, it seems a large portion of the fans will get what they wanted.
I didn't love Bielsa, I did like his overall game plan but thought it was too rigid. That is, I think you can't always go to the attack and overrun your oponents with 6 or 7 players all the time. Sometimes you have to adjust to the way your opponent is setting up. That is how the world has seen Argentina play for a while now, including in the Copa America and the Olympic Games. A team attacking for 90 minutes. Argentina outscored all oponents in the Copa and the Olympics 33-6.
Having watched the games in both tournaments, I can say that in all of them, even in the losses to Mexico and Brazil, Argentina dominated completely. The games were mostly played in the opponent's half. But the so-called 'juego total' doesn't always equal a win. I don't agree with Bielsa leaving, but I think he might have taken all the critics too personally and that's why he is doing it now.
Many rumors flying in the world press tonight about the replacement. Carlos Bianchi, Hector Couper, José Pekerman, Carlos Bilardo all have been mentioned...
