Quite simple, my Dear: That depends...as usual!  Big grin Big grin

Single-Breasted suit: Can be left unbuttoned, if there is no representative occasion like greeting someone or opening up a meeting, then done up of course, BUT: Always leave the lower button undone, full buttoning up of a single-breaster indicates ignorance  Big grin

Double-breasted suit: Always buttoned up, leaving it undone looks just extremely uncool and dumb!

No jacket at all: In a meeting, but always let the guy at the top decide, or the client, if they say "let's get rid of the jackets", it's ok, but you can keep it on if you like, that wouldn't be considered impolite, the other way round (taking it off while everybody keeps it on) is very impolite.

Does that help?

Done up, otherwise it could look quite sloppy.

Having the buttons done up makes you look more respectable and more formal. I prefer wearing a blazer.

Yes there is a difference between a Blazer and a Jacket.
A Blazer has two lower pockets with covering flaps and usually has one top open pocket.
A Jacket is the same shape but has two lower open pockets and one top open pocket.

Exactly what Andreas said. Suit etiquette (and lack of it) really bugs me. If you know how to dress properly for business, it is worth an extra 10% to you in terms of salary and commissions. Trust me - it works. Best of all try to get a bespoke suit and clean it regularly. If you look the part you will act the part. Oh and gents, no large silver buckles on shoes please. It's soooo 'work experience trainee'.

Basically I started this thread because I am bored sh*tless at school and keep playing with the buttons on my blazer, so it made me wonder about blazers.

Understood Kaz, but now at least you know how to play with your buttons (ahem, no pun intended) in CORRECT STYLE...so tonight you'll go home thinking "WOW! I learned something for life today"  Big grin Big grin Now isn't that great?

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one made the wear a Blazer at school, although I always keep mine undone. Reason; people at my school have a tendency to swipe their hands down the middle busting the buttons off.

It's too hot to wear a jacket here pretty much all the time. I definately vote for no jacket at all.

Always undone for me. I wear nice suits and blazers so leaving them unbuttoned is still very professional. I can also breath better and feel more comfortable when my jacket is untied.

Also, for me, I have a flat stomach and moderate V shaped torso, so I'm very comfortable having my dress shirt or a golf shirt highlight my build without a jacket covering it up.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Hahah, I was never made to wear a blazer at scvhool except on occasions like prizegiving etc.. but our uniform was more or less an ugly breathable t-shirt.

Wearing a school/college Blazer shows your pride in your school/college. I would rather wear a blazer as my college uniform instead of a t-shirt

Im sorry, but 777ER has misinformed you.

A Blazer is normally thought of as being a single color, usually blue or black and has gold or silver buttons.

A Sport Coat will have a color pattern or weave that at a glance will not appear solid. Sport coats do not have gold or silver buttons.

The shape and style of the pockets has nothing to do with the type of jacket it is. And for the record, the lower pockets that do not have the flap are called besom pockets and are found on suits, sport coats and blazers.

Is he a tailor or in some sort of men's garment business that would give him special knowledge? Just being 82 years old doesn't make your grandfather the foremost authority on things.

Hi,

With a single-breasted jacket always leave the lower/lowest button undone, as has been said. I always undo the buttons when I sit down because it makes it look better; when I stand or walk buttons done up. Everything else looks sloppy, in my opinion.  Wink/being sarcastic

Im sorry your grandfather mislead you, sigh. Up until a year ago, I sold mens suits and accoutrements for four years and I thought I was correct. Just to verify, I called my friend who has been selling suits for over 10 years. He was able to validate my position.  Sad

I suggest you get an 'updated' opinion.  Smile

Apparently the etiquette is that the jacket is done up while standing and undone for sitting.

While sitting the stomach bulges out and if the jacket was done up the jacket would look distorted.

Done up or not doesn't bother me but people who leave the brand label on the sleeve bugs me real bad.

and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.
