Second Car.....4Runner?

Mon Sep 20, 2004 4:43 am

Any experience with Toyota 4 Runners? Good...bad...indifferent?
Still have the uber-sedan for work (and will be replaced with 06 next year)..but need a SUV-ish car for weekends and hauling.

Range Rover...too expensive (74K)
LR3....not out yet (was first choice)
Land Cruiser to be redone in '06..
Grand Cherokee turned fairly ugly...
Sequoi felt too big...

Are the 4-Runners nice?

Intelligent opinions and replies are appreciated...

I don't own one, but I've driven one enough times to have a decent feel for them, I shared the car with my brother before I got my Camry. The only other SUV I've driven enough to have a basis of comparison is the Ford Explorer, and I very much prefered the 4Runner.

The model I got aquaited with was a 1998 SR5, at the time the base trim line. Everything is logically placed, except for the cupholders which were a bitch, completly blocking the AC controls when used. There is a power rear window, which is sorta nice. It handled like a truck and accelerated very quickly, non-4 wheel drive models have rear wheel drive. I loved the engine sound, nice deep baratone. My brother still owns it and has had no reliability problems that I know of.

Overal was a very nice car. The 4runner was heavily redesigned in 2003, and they are supposidly much improved over an already excellent design. Other SUV's I think you might want to look at- Honda Pilot, Acura MDX, Lexus RX330, Toyota Highlander (tad on the wimpy side if you ask me), and VW Toureg (if you got the cash  Big grin

My family has had 2 4 Runners. The original 2 door, then we bought a 4 door 1990 version in Oct. of 1989.

It still runs great, with well over 160,000 miles on it. We've had no major problems, only a couple minor things here and there. Literally they were very minor things, years apart.

I drove it for the past 2 years or so, and beat the snot out of it, off roading with friends and hauling all kinds of stuff. I love it to death, if I ever were to buy and SUV Id choose a 4 Runner. I would also say its a great value. Im not one to spend the $$$ for a BMW or Mercedes, so Id say its a excellent choice. Also with the BMW or Mercedes, I would not want to be taking it out often for fear of it getting damaged. At least with a 4 Runner you havent paid a gazillion bucks for it. As for the Land Rover, my Grandad owned one for a while and hated it. He said it constantly had things going wrong with it.

As far as size, it may not be the biggest, but I am 6'4'' almost and I fit fine in it. The newer ones are slightly larger, and have slightly stronger engines as well. With mine, I wouldnt be caught racing anybody for anything, as it isnt the quickest SUV, but, it gets the job done.

The 4Runner sounds like a good reasonable choice. You should check out the new Nissan Pathfinder as well... they should be hitting dealer lots soon.

For not too many bucks both of these trucks should do you fine. Should be able to get either of these fully equipped for under $40k.

The X5 hits the $60K mark with the goodies installed..making it a rather expensive garage queen for the supermarket.....the X3 is a joke (don't believe me? Drive one!)---the 3-Series wagon actually handles better and is more comfortable to drive...

The Disco is being..not to be clever..Disco'ntinued for the LR3 (think 85% of a Range Rover)---but no availability for several months....which is a pity, because it gets the Jag V-8 (likely the only notable Jag engine this side of the 80's V-12's)

Common sense dictates a price of around $40-45K---there is not a whole lot in that market save some pimped out Expeditions and Envoys---which look nasty.

The 4Runner looked a little quirky...but the V-8 Limited can be had for around $38K with most the toys. The top of the line one has the V8 option...but no four wheel drive--which is confusing.

And yes, I will go look at the Pathfinders. My issue with Nissan is that the interiors are all extremely plasticky looking and do not have a substantial feel...

My bad... I thought you were looking for something in the 25-35k range. I'll recommend the Acura MDX, Lexus RX330, and VW Toureg.

The hybrid RX330 comes out in the spring I think, offering very powerful acceleration and efficent gas mileage. I've had a thing for the Acura MDX for a while, I love those rear tail lights. The Toureg has some great aspects, but A. I wish it were an Audi and B. I just don't equate VW with 40k cars yet. The Toureg is the only midsized SUV that I know of with a turbocharged V10.

Hi Greg,

I've got a 2003 Toyota 4Runner 4WD (the V6), and I have to say - I LOVE this truck!  Love

It's wider and longer than the previous body style, and rides like a luxury car. It also has an impressive array of toys that come standard, whereas other SUVs offer them as pricey options (like trip/mileage computers, extra AC outlets, etc). Also, running boards come standard, as does a towing package which is integrated into the frame.

I'd suggest going with the V6 if you like get-up-n'-go, as the V6 actually has more horsepower than the V8 does - although the V8 has more torque, so while both are rated at 5000lbs towing capability, the V8 tows a bit easier.

I went to the 4Runner from a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport, and I was getting 17mpg on average. The 4Runner? 22mpg on average so far - and it's a far larger vehicle.

Greg

My dad has a 2003 4Runner Limited V8. He has had a few quality issues with the rubber moulding around the door and the chrome plated lug-nut covers corroding. Other then that, he has been very happy with its car-like ride for a traditional SUV and its good cargo capicity. If you're looking for a more upsale version, look at the Lexus GX470 (picture below) or the VW Touareg, which has also rated very high.

EACO AS....I didn't know that...I assumed the V8 was more powerful...I have no intention of towing..so I'll look again at the V-6.

Flight.....Lexus 470 still tops out at over $55K...which is doable..but more than I want to spend on a second car (kinda stupid, yeah?) The 330 is for women (check the sales demographics!). The Toureg is just plain ugly (although I understand it's quite nice...).

I'm leaning toward the 4-Runner..but will also look at the Pathfinder.

Thanks for your help.

I owned a 1988 4Runner and had it 15 years until I traded it in. I drove it 463,000 kilometres (290,000 miles for non-metric folks) and it was still running when I traded it in. Sure it had a lot of rust by then because of all the salt used on our Canadian roads in winter. But it was a great vehicle and given the chance would definately have bought another.

Just for your info, I traded it in on a new Nissan Xterra. Why the switch from Toyota (the 4Runner was my 4th Toyota) to Nissan. Simply because Toyota no longer has available a 4Runner with a 5-speed manual transmission here in Canada. I love a standard manual transmission so I switched to Nissan who offered the 5-speed in the Xterra. By the way, I had contacted Toyota about getting a 5-spd 4Runner and they said that it wasn't worth their bother to bring in the 5-spds into Canada because they didn't sell enough. Everybody else wants the Automatic gearbox. Well thanks, but no thanks. Toyota can't be bothered for a customer with cash in their pocket.... well at least Nissan was nice enought to oblidge. Guess Toyota had so many customers they didn't care if they lost a 4 time Toyota owner. Geez.... what ever happened to customer loyalty.

Check out the redesigned 2005 Toyota Tacoma pick up, not and SUV per se but the 4 door long bed version is very very nice, check the off road package, since this is a redesign it is a bit wider and longer than the current model and the interior is much much bigger....................do a search on the web for pictures, most of the ones you will find are of the X-runner (for the bling-bling types) but the 4 door off road version is very nice and they should be hitting dealer showrooms in a couple of weeks.

EACO AS....I didn't know that...I assumed the V8 was more powerful...I have no intention of towing..so I'll look again at the V-6.

Yeah, it's odd - the V6 gives you 245HP but the V8 comes in at only 235HP, but lots more torque (320lb-ft vs. 283lb-ft for the V6). I was mistaken about the towing, though - the V6 can tow 5,000lbs, the V8 gives you up to 7,000lbs.

UPDATE -

Things may have changed with the 2005 version, since I was looking over Toyota's technical specs on their website, and NOW they list the V6 at 240HP, while the V8 shows 270HP. I don't know if it's a misprint or whatever, since other sites still show the two at 245 (V6) and 235 (V8) respectively, the same as the 2003 and 2004 versions.

You may want to check further with a local Toyota dealership on this, though. Either way the 4Runner's a great buy.

Take a look at the Infiniti FX35/45 - I have a 35 and it is awesome! Fast and comfortable, slightly larger interior than and X5 but loaded it is at least $10,000 less to buy. A great deal.

GM (like other manufacturers) has a competitive analysis disassembly facility where they tear-down other make vehicles, right down to seperating welds in the sheet metal and stressing components to test and compare materials, assembly methods, etc. Word from some friends involved in this operation commonly gives the 4Runner extremely high marks on build quality and ruggedness. I have no personal experience with the vehicle, but other professional sources give it a very high grade in quality and durability. Regards..Jack

Greg,

I'm also looking for a second car and I happen to be very close to purchasing a Nissan Titan SE King Cab, 2wd. I will be using it for hauling - pleasure and business, it possesses nice enough creature comforts and plenty of room for both clients or friends. Plenty of power for my needs.

A Titan would be too big for you then. I prefer a previous generation 4-runner compared to the current ones, yet I still like the current model 4-runner. V-6 or V-8 would be a tough decision.

I've got a 2001 Limited 4Runner and I've been really impressed with it. I looked at all the other ones, but mostly it was the engine. I had an 88 Honda I drove past 300,000 miles (still running), just keep oil in it and take care of general maintenance, and the Toyota engines seem to have as good of a reputation as the Hondas do. The 4Runner was reasonably priced, came fairly loaded and performs perfectly. I didn't want something too luxurious, where I'd feel bad pushing it up a mountain trail, so that's why I cut out the higher end SUVs. Very happy with it.

A good friend of mine has a 2002 4Runner which I drive at least 6x a month (she hates driving in the city) excluding long road trips. As I'm sure everything on the newer 05 models have changed, the 02's are not very car-like both in feel and handling. Hitting potholes will nearly break your bones and turning radius is a joke. It does have power though, with torque powerful enough to tow a 41 footer with ease.

I heard the new 05's are much better all around.

Another alternative for around the same price is Honda's Pilot and/or the cura MDX (same car). Honda's in general are great cars. I prefer them over Toyota's anyday, if I had to choose.

Now Scarlet...just cause we have an inferior MB...shouldn't make you hurl insults!  Smile
What would you recommend? Please, please, please don't tell me an ML350!!!

Anyway, I'm putting a 45K cap the expenditure....which arguably is no chump change for a small SUV....but not a lot for upper end stuff. I priced out the 4 Runner Limited (V8 2 wheel drive) with most the goodies at $41,400. The Lexus GX compares at a hair under $52K. Much nicer interior..but that's usually the first part that shows wear (other than your wallet).

At the most, it will only get about 5-8K miles/yearly.

I can only be a car snob on one vehicle, the other one should be fairly practical! My first choice WAS the LR3...but they won't be around for a while.

DEFINITLEY check out the BMW X5 / X3.... also, look at the Honda Pilot.... DO NOT go for the Merc ML Class.... We had one this summer that we rented, for a month (an ML500) and it was terrible... It was less than a year old, and squeaking all the time!

I had an X5 4.4i and it was really a wonderful car. EXCELLENT performance. Truly an excellent piece of machinery.

I switched from a 4Runner to a Audi A4 Quattro after an incident in Vail Pass. Apparently 4Runners don't cartwheel too well... That said if I could go back to my 2000 4Runner and 86 the '04 Audi, I would in a second. I miss the 4Runner but then again I'm more into the simple things when it comes to cars.

4Runner to an A4? Now that's a change! I paid a little over 19g's for my 2001. I can use it to cater parties, plenty of room, and when the guys and I want to go fishing, it'll haul all 4 of us, gear and a boat comfortably. I would probably never buy a new car. Just doesn't seem practical. It drops what? 3 grand in value as soon as you drive it off the lot?

What do you have that is so 'special'?

Greg-

The Cayenne V6 retails around $41K (according to the Porsche website) if you are willing to keep the option list short.

Ah, Greg, you know who the queen of the cool cars is around here - and it's not you!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy (King, in your case!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

Flight152:

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK 55. This is not mine, but is exactly the same, except mine has nicer wheels. And it kicks Greg's Bimmer's arse.  Smile

The Cayenne is a travesty of nature. A Porsche SUV? Soccer moms hauling their fat kids' asses around in Porsches? Please!

So Greg - why not a wagon?

But that was when I ruled the world

Before someone takes this seriously......Scarlet and I are joking....we are twin children of different mothers (both german...but mine is from Munich..her's from Stuttgart). We have a healthy 'disrespect' for each others motoring choices.

Flight....Cayennes are ugly beasts---but I didn't know you could get one with a V6.....

Whatever the choice is...I'll likely buy it this weekend just so I can stop thinking about it!

Scarlet

Time to upgrade to the new CLK model, isn't it?  Laugh out loud

By the way, i've noticed you talk about Thunder bay a lot and i'm always there in the summer at my friends cottage in Ridgeway on thunder bay road. I love it up there.

Neat... those Google ads on 4runners on the side; how do they do that?

I'm assuming a recurring word scan on the thread?

Theory proving time:

Last I read, the M5 still kicked the big boxy ass of the CLK....or is your memory THAT selective???? (I'll give kudos to the E55 since it is a very remarkable car) But the new M5 with 511hp, 7 speed and a V-10 will eat it for lunch! ("What's that blur in my rear view mirror? Oh, yes...EVERYONE!).
 Smile

A wagon??? Haven't seen one that even looked remotely masculine. The older 5 series and E class wagons looked disturbingly like hearses when delivered in black---just can't shake the image. And no, there is not enough drugs in the world that would make me ever consider a Magnum (pimp daddy car II-the sequel).

Why not a 4Runner? You can have it in your garage and not have to worry about it--Toyota reliability and all.
