XP Professional Upgrade

Wed Sep 22, 2004 5:07 am

I need help please, fellow A.netters!

I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 98SE to XP Professional. However, as soon as I have entered the Product Key and the installation process starts, the following error occurs and eventually causes a Fatal Error. The setup can not be completed.

Setup cannot copy E:I386MFC42 DLL to C:windowssetupMFC42.DLL

Any ideas what the cause could be and how I can rectify this?

Did you confirm your system meets the minimum requirements for hardware as indicated on the side of the box the software came in? Windows 98SE is pretty old (in the computer workd), so I the first thing I'd look at is hardware. Are the RAM, disk space, processor, and graphics card good to go on Windows XP?

Also, are you letting XP do the upgrade from 98 or have you reformatted your disk for a "clean" install (which I definately recommend)?

Thanks mate, I have seen that one already, and will try again this evening when I have some time on my hands.

Yes, I made very sure that my system meets all the hardware requirements, as XP Pro is quite expensive in South Africa. Unfortunately I have to go with the upgrade, as there is a lot of data on my hard disk.

Thanks for the input.

Make a folder on your harddrive called, XPPro or whatever. Open that folder up, and copy the entire contents of the cd to the new folder. Then run setup.exe from your harddrive.

I am guessing it is a problem with the cdrom drive, is it old?
