Dayton Ohio-A Scary Place

Wed Sep 22, 2004 9:51 pm

This week has been quite scary here in Dayton.

I'm a student at the Univ. of Dayton but live in Dallas.

A friend of mine was walking home from a bar (that happens to be 500 yards away from my house) called the Fieldhouse. He lives 3 streets over. He was severely mugged. His skull was fractured, and he got a hemorrhage in his head. This guy is a big guy, bigger than myself. He was hit over the head with some object (a bat, a blackjack, something hard) he was left there for a few hours unconscious. Luckily some of his fraternity brothers found him and took him to the hospital. All of his things that he had in his pockets were gone (cell, $$, Keys etc). This took place in my neighborhood

The same day, the guys roommate, another friend of mine got a gun pulled on him at a party. He asked the local guy to leave, because he knew no one there. Then he went to shake his hand and say sorry, then the guy lifts up his shirt and says 'back the fuck away from me' with a gun on the waist of his pants. He called the cops, and the cops said this exact thing: "you had a party on Rogge street (where he lives) what do you expect?"

Then yesterday on a street that runs perpendicular to mine (Alberta), a 4 year old girls was shot in the back during a drive by shooting.

The student government president went to talk to the University's President, the President said "I'll look into this matter" and thats it. It seems as the school is trying to pigeon hole this whole thing like it never happened. Well I can tell you if its up to me, I won't let this go away.

Okay I'm done now.

The University President should take a little more interest in it, for obivous reasons.

How's your friend doing? He going to be OK? Hoping he'll be all right.

My mom went to U of D for two years, but I don't remember any stories like that from her.

Alpha- he is doing better. He has been in Miami Valley Hospital since Sunday morning. As soon as the blood stops draining from his ears he can leave. But he is in alot of pain. He is on a painkiller that is stronger than morphine. He should be able to leave tonight or tommorow to go home for a few days. Oddly enough he is co-oping this semester and is working with GE to do the engines for the 7E7.

This stuff never happend back in the day, both my parents went to UD and this never happend. This adds to the assaults last year. I was assaulted, and another guy was mugged with a tire iron.

I was in Dayton, Ohio area last June. Specifically Centerville, Ohio. I was there for a bowling tournament at Poelking South Lanes.

I hope that Dayton, Ohio will not be a scary place in the near future. Or I will not bowl there again! LOL

Thanks for the warning...

My Aunt and Uncle live in Centerville, and, like most cites of any size, the 'burbs are usually a different place. Centerville is a nice area, as is the other 'burb they lived in years ago, West Carrolton.

Centerville, and W. Carrolton are really no problem....Sad part is the school is near a bad area, but not the worst area in Dayton..

Geographically if people want to know, I live about a mile from Downtown, Dayton

Thank that mayor Dayton so happily elected, Rhine. They voted out a competent mayor, Mike Turner, who was rebuilding downtown and actually turned the city around in one term. Then elected Rhine McLin, a woman who is quite possibly mentally ill (watch her eyes sometime on the news) in as mayor simply because she is black and the voters of Dayton (all 5 of them) seemed to think she would be a better fit than a white guy who DOESN'T talk to himself in public (seen it first hand). So now Dayton has massive police cutbacks and has almost eliminated their fire department and the revitilazation that was starting to really take hold is in danger of stalling because, once again, nobody wants to be in Dayton after dark. The public schools she said she would fix, are still regressing because she refuses to throw out her buddies on the school board. Thanks to that Dayton's Tax revenue is limited because only the welfare crowd will live within the city limits.

Before I moved out to SAT I worked for a civil engineering firm (back when I was studying something I actually liked), we were heavily involved in the revitilazation of the UD area (I actually did the initial survey on some of the new Brown street restauraunts around the time I was staking the new UD dorm). The city and the university had actually approached land developers and wanted something done with the South Park/UD area. I guess they can pump all the money they want into putting in restaraunts, bars, and coffee shops but if the police can't secure the area at night it is all for naught.

A few years before AA61hvy moved to that area it was nothing but crack houses and condemned buildings, a few of those are still present but Miami Valley Hospital and UD have bought up most of the slums and either converted them into new buildings, student housing, or just boarded them up and left them until they could decide what to do with them.

I hope your friend gets well soon, no matter how old you are there is no substitue for the buddy system.

BTW I remember the fieldhouse being a dump.

Also, don't count on the University to do jack shit, they already have your money for the semester and they know it can be a pain in the butt to change schools, so they don't care.

Kate, the last bass player from my Cure rip-off band, just moved back to Dayton. She's a nurse there.

My sister went to UD for 4 years, graduated in '97. I didn't hear many stories from her like this, but I always found the surrounding area outside the campus (in front of the cemetary) to be particulary shady. On one side you have crap and on the other side you have nice, big houses. I know she lived in Marycrest her first two years, and then lived in "The Ghetto" her last two years. Do they still refer to it as "The Ghetto"? I think one of the streets she lived on was Lawndale. Anyway, I hope things get better for your friend.

Well clearly, if you have to call the Dayton police in an emergency you have to say the right thing in order to get a prompt response. Just tell them a donut shop is being burglarized. Twenty cops plus the SWAT team will be there is a few minutes  Smokin cool

Hope your friend recovers well. I've been to Dayton quite a few times and I was never really that impressed with the place, it seemed run down within the city while places like Beavercreek are suburbanized, seemed like nothing in between. The area around UD particularly didn't look inviting. The town has some personality but it's decaying...

I actually watched a few minutes of the local evening news and saw the story of the 4 year old girl that was shot. The bullets went through the screen and front doors and then struck the girl who was standing behind it.

As for the area...the city has good parts and BAD parts just like every city. Centerville is one of the nicest 'burbs' of Dayton. Believe it or not the UD area is not the worst part of Dayton.....the west side of Dayton past the Miami river is where the real s**t goes down. My best friend's brother is a Dayton police officer who works third shift on the west side.....I'm surprised he hasn't been shot yet. We(FedEx) have a large contract with Reynolds and Reynolds and I used to work evenings down on Louie Street(off of Germantown for A.netters who live here) and when my shift was over I got out of the area as quick as possible.

Where you live ain't shit AA61hvy and I do have to admit I am a bit surprised that what happened, happened. The neighborhood you are in has cleaned up quite a bit from what it was 5-7 years ago. You have quite a bit of overlapping police coverage, you have UD campus cops, you have the Jokewood(Oakwood) PD patrolling one perimiter of the campus and I have even seen them as far down as the UDF on Brown street, and if you ever see them at night since their budget cuts, the Dayton PD.

Maybe the cleanup is part of the problem, the area isn't patrolled as much as it was at one point in time.

A pasty white boy like you needs to try standing on the corner of Third and Gettysburg some night and see how long it takes to get shot, same thing if you go North of downtown, or East and visit the mullet crowd. For best results go after midnight and dress nicely.

Im serious though, don't walk alone, that is just kind of common sense, it doesn't matter how big you are if the guy comes up behind you with some sort of weapon. However, if he sees two or more of you he will move on to an easier target, criminals like that are pussies, they don't want a fight. You also don't have to come right out and say "hey I don't wanna get jumped, will you walk home with me?" but given the present situation I don't think anyone would make fun of you. Everyone is going to go home at some point, just go with the group.

Actually it is pretty smart of the crack head to work that area, UD isn't a cheap school and in all honesty a lot of college aged people lack situational awareness, especially if they are coming out of a bar. The leaving the bar part was the attackers mistake, in picking an easier target he also picked one that had just spent his money. Your friend was smart to not be carrying too much of value, maybe the dirtbag that attacked him will seek greener pastures if he keeps getting nothing but cell phones and empty wallets.

I talked to my buddy. He was released from the hospital 3 days ago, he will be at home for at least 2 weeks. His head still hurts like crazy. But the Dayton PD came and talked to his roomates. They said this "we've noticed a trend since mid summer, we have seen about 6 cases like your friends. This is looked at as a gang initiation. A car full of men get out club an unsuspecting person on the back of the head with a hard object then the kick the crap out of them" It's a gang initiation basically. But the disturbing part is, that all the victims are all similar. They are bigger guys. My buddy was 6'4'' 220. I'm 6'3'' 235. The other guys had similar stats. These 'gangs' go after big dudes. I'm pretty nervous leaving my house, which is sad. I don't walk alone here anymore at all. I'm not a conspiracy guy either, that's what the cops told us... Freaky shit..
